We submitted a FOI (Freedom of Information Act) request to TFL (Transport for London) which has revealed the devastating truth about the classic and cherished cars lost to the latest ULEZ scrappage scheme since 2023.
Thousands of classic and collectible vehicles have been scrapped, including Alfa Romeos, Porsche 924, Ford Mustangs, Fiat 126 and even a rare Mitsubishi 3000GT 4WD 4WS as well as 70 VW Golf GTI hot hatches!
This is evidence of a tragic loss to our automotive heritage, with as many as 54,000 vehicles potentially still roadworthy, needlessly destroyed for grant compensation to the owners. What makes this even more shocking is that some of these cars had the potential to become cherished future classics.
In this video, we reveal the most heartbreaking cars scrapped in the latest ULEZ scheme, based on an official FOI request. Did your favourite car make the list of casualties? These cars have been removed from London’s streets, crushed under the guise of creating a cleaner environment - but at what cost to car culture? And what impact will it have on the used car market?

Now that's is what I call Green. Let's all go and buy Chinese EV, made in environmentally friendly factories, using coal fired power stations. Disgusting, there used to be parked in Firs Park Avenue, N21 an excellent Rover R8 and a Jaguar XJ8 (X350), more cars that are still in very good condition. How can this save the environment. Makes me annoyed that Blair and Co were following the EU in getting people to buy diesel powered cars. I know I am not a fan of BMWs, but getting rid of so many of these cars, Mr Khan needs to be scraped himself.

Because these vehicles were scrapped, completely destroyed.. ALL the parts that could have been used to keep other cars going for years to come have gone, even if they were "evil diesels" that were scrapped many parts would be interchangeable with a petrol version, so the loss of these parts will shorten the lives of those left... It`s sacrilege...

Worse - as the scrapped vehicles were totally destroyed, useable spares that could have been given further life to other cars were destroyed too. This means the environmental cost is higher. Clearly the scrappage scheme is wanton destruction, designed to satisfy the agenda that wants ordinary people to give up the ownership of private cars

I have spent £47,000 restoring my 1974 Ford Cortina Mk.3 to Concourse condition so far,, and no amount of money offered would make me scrap it, that is the difference between a true classic car enthusiast, that has owned the same car for almost 49 years, and some one that owns an older car, who is ready to accept up to £2,000.towards a modern ugly, car with no charm or beautiful styling at all.

I also enjoy owning and driving classic cars, but honestly, many of the cars on the list would have values below £2000 and the owners may have seen it as an opportunity of getting rid of the car without all the hassle of trying to sell it. The only reason many of the classic and collectable cars which are desired today is because of their perceived rarity and nostalgia. If for example every Ford Capri etc. that had ever been manufactured were still being driven today, I wonder how desirable they'd be. Many of them weren't that great when new, yet through the rose tinted memories of our youth and nostalgia rubbish cars (and all collectables) become desirable. None of the cars on the list appear to be amazingly desirable or valuable. There are no vintage or highly collectable cars here, just daily run of the mill Classic (old) ones. I know this comment is out of step with the sentiment of the others, but I think we need a sense of perspective here. I read that Cotinaman63 spent £47,000 restoring his 1974 Ford Cortina Mk.3. It's his money and he can do whatever he chooses with it, but personally I can think of a lot of far more desirable cars to invest that sort of money in. By all means save desirable cars but the mediocre, I'm not convinced. In my opinion all that the scrapage scheme has done is accelerate to inevitable scrapping of most of these vehicles. If you feel strongly about saving a Classic or old car, there are auction sites with many cars available desperately looking for buyers. Put your money where your mouth is and rescue one of those. I own seven cars from 1914 through to 2014, both petrol and diesel and one electric. The electric one is from 1914 so I'm not exactly an EV zealot. Apart from two 21st century cars the most modern one is 1965 so don't mistake me for an old car hater. In my youth I can remember Jaguar E-types being £200 and Dinos being well under a thousand with people struggling to find willing buyers. Old cars are just old cars until they become desirable.

I`m going through your list now.. Horrific... As someone who`s taken literally hundreds of thousands of pictures of London's older car stock over the last 18 years (many of which I`ve put on Flickr), I quite likely took pictures of quite a few of them, so I feel like I`m in mourning.. Some rarer retro`s you missed, A ULEZ exempt Leyland Princess (!) Citroen 2CV, & an AX GT, classic Panda`s & an Uno, a Tipo, dozens of Mk1 Punto`s (including a Bertone cabrio), a couple each of original Mk1 Brava`s & Bravo`s & a Marea Weekend, Mk2 & 3 Cavaliers, Loads of black cabs, including a Fairway FX4, LOADS of E30`s & E36`s, some E28`s & E34`s, some Merc W123`s, loads of W124`s, most of those will have been worth more than the 2 grand on offer.. I despair at peoples logic sometimes.. What doesn't make sense to me is that some of the cars on the list are actually ULEZ compliant, so, how did they go through the ULEZ scrappage scheme?!? Also, You can pretty much guarantee that a lot of the cars there, especially the diesel Hyundai`s & Kia`s etc, were quite likely what the owners of the 2009 scrappage scheme victims "upgraded" to, I`d imagine many of those cars were OAP owned, & a good percentage probably hadn't even done 50,000 miles (like many of the OAP owned cars I`ve seen vanish in the last year, I`ve checked thousands of their MOT`s, many weren't even doing 1000 miles a year & had little if any MOT advisories ever).. That level of waste is frankly vile..

When fuel tax and excise duty are beyond the pockets of ordinary people how desirable do you think ordinary cars will be? Also, if you believe the 40 year exemption will last much longer, just look at France and Germany. I go on several rallies a year in Europe and many of the German and French owners have their cars registered in the UK because the 30 year rule in their countries is so draconian as to make their cars useless if registered in their own countries. You go to Redcorns in Tottenham, the busiest scrappy in London, & they took most of the scrappage cars, there's a relentless stream of cars that go in, you watch them depolluting them, then they go straight to the crusher, & there's a constant stream of trucks carrying the crushed cars out the other side.. They couldn't care less about anything over about 8 years old.

This video showed up yesterday, and I've been putting off watching, because I just knew it would just be too awful, what kind of person scraps a perfectly useable car, if it has an current MOT, I mean who cares if a 1990's Nissan Micra gets scraped they where just faceless shopping trollies anyway, but some of the cars you mention like an Audi Quattro, an Alfa 155/156/159 a Lancia Delta, "any" Ford Capri, a Bentley ffs... just who in their right mind scraps these cars if they have current MOT and are still useable, so they can drive around in a faceless allegedly non-polluting SUV euro box POS or EV, which in another 5-10 years will be unsalable and worth nothing...when if they had kept the car they scrapped most likely would have gained in value... just utter madness. Admittedly I thankfully no longer live in Greater London, but I would "never" in a hundred billion years scrap my beloved Audi TT just to drive some awful EV or soft roader or nasty shopping trolley, my heart bleeds for those lost classics... why didn't these people put these car in a classic car auction or online ffs, but then perhaps the lure of easy money is too hard to ignore, a travesty has been perpetrated on car owners living in London and some have sadly fallen for it.

To participate in ULEZ scheme is an offer that most of affected people have been accepting and signing to it. They have registered on TFL corporate website and have all agreed to become "road users". According T&C of the contract with corporation TFL they either scrapped their old "non compline" car or keep paying the fee to use the roads. Everything in this commercial activity is voluntary, although some mistakenly assume they had to agree with the offer and had no choice.

One big problem now is replacement parts. Just one example (not even a classic) I have one of the last Astra vans 2011, 1.7 cdti as my second van for small jobs or if I have to do long runs and don't need much equipment. I love the van and it's never wanted for anything maintenance wise and is in great condition. It's fast and super economical, I can do Yorkshire to Canterbury and back in 6th gear on less than a £70 single tank. I took it in last year for it's MOT and it needed a new mid section on the exhaust. As it was a later model H van they had put a modified Astra J engine in it and no one could get the part, I searched everywhere online and no luck. They only make replacements for the more abundant older models up to 2008 (for now) which is a different size. The only place that would touch it was one of the boy racer mod garages. They were helpful and made me a section up quickly but could only do it in stainless steel and it cost me £600. With all the clean air zones the van is probably only really worth about a £1000 now. It does leave you in a difficult situation when you don't use it as a main vehicle and the prices are plummeting, plus the rising road tax, insurance and then the low emission charges if I go in many cities. Anymore bills like that and the only real choice will be sending it to the scrapyard. This is still quite a newish and common vehicle from a major manufacturer on the road, I can't imagine the headache, cost of owning and maintaining some of the cars you listed in these times. Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Lets forget the past. Lets take a functional tool (and dare I say somewhat more stylish looking vehicle) that might have been solidly built and replace it with something less reliable, more embracing of having a car as a service you have less control of, increased disconnection of the driving experience, that becomes more difficult for the local garage either to source parts for or service. Lets have it 'connected' so that it provides another source of personal, private and ad market rich data source. Lets not look at the total cost of ownership but a company's (and their third party marketing arm's) revenue. Cynical, you say? No... I'm a realist.

be interesting what actually happens to these 'scrap' cars - eg are the engines removed and reused ? Most likely engines will be shipped oversea's ( or possibly spares here ) . The scrappers were paying owners in addition to the 2k . Negates the objective for scrappage
@st200ol

@@Tl-rs1dv They will all be treated differently when scrapped, the same as any car. Some parts if valuable will be kept but in general the materials will be recycled for reuse. No negation happens because the main purpose for stoppage was to remove the most polluting cars out of the ULE Zone. They didn’t have to be scrapped, owners would have taken the best option to net them the most money in their pockets, no one is scrapping a £20k car for £2k these scrapped cars would have been valued at around the scheme payment.

I was wondering the same thing myself actually, it does feel like that might be the case, but without the years being listed it's hard to be sure. Haven’t 90% of Londoners moved on now. I haven’t seen much about ULEZ in the media lately, I suppose everyone has moved on to having a go a Starmer and Labour. I did hear on the news that Diesel fuel sales are way down in London with some places considering not selling it anymore. Watching the bit where you list the cars scrapped. None of the cars you listed would have been in great condition and I’ll bet they were all at the point where they were beyond economic repair for most people, not every old car is of a suitable condition to be kept as a classic. I know people find Mini Coopers in a barn that are basically a pile of rust and do them up but that is an exception rather than a rule.

No , the scrappage scheme was politically driven ( and now elections over has been ceased with majority of applications turned down ) also most diesels worth more than the scrappage offer so people stung with paying 12.50 /day will not vote Labour. The ' garages not selling diesel' is from a propaganda report ( from T and E Climate campaigners) , if there were no diesel fuel there would be very little food and other essential deliveries . The scrappage scheme was a waste of tax payers money as well as dubious environmental benefit of scrapping a serviceable car and replacing with a higher CO2 emission 2nd hand petrol car or worse a new build from China .
