It’s tough for me just to choose 1 favorite episode. They all have a great point that makes the individual episode great. For the sake of great parenting in taking time to explain a subject to their child- I like the episode w/ the pet ducks. Watching Dick take the time to explain things to Richie was priceless. And something you may not see to much of these days. That was of value in family life. Another favorite was the Twizzle. I could go on. But I’ll leave it there.

Because I was born 1960, I was able to watch alot of those old TV shows when new, both sitcoms and dramas. I was only age 4 when I started watching them, but I could understand most of them. We had a fancy console TV without legs, it sat flat on the floor, and had a 25" screen, but was b/w. Even though tv screens are 65 inches now, those 25 and 26 inchers didn't seem that small, really...not like those from the 1950's. The TV my family had was nice, but very heavy. My parents didn't get a color TV until 1980.

1:13:32 2 major continuity gaffes in the same scene. 1. No rock in the basement that they'd never be able to put a pool table in. 2. Buddy's brother was confirmed which throws into question Buddy being Jewish and becoming a Bar Mitzvah boy. Still not as bad as waking up in one house on the day of Richie's birth and then going to the hospital from the other house. Regardless of the mistakes- still the greatest tv show of all time!
@linguafile5 ай бұрын
In “Buddy Sorrell, Man and Boy”, the Bar Mitzvah ceremony is referred to several times as “confirmation”. I think using “confirmation” made it more understandable (and palatable) to a gentile audience, equating it with Christian confirmation, since it’s observed at a similar age.

Richie's tears and trembling voice just break my heart. I have to be feeling really strong to watch this episode. There is a (mostly) happy ending, thankfully. Dick Van Dyke, like most excellent actors, is a master of tragic-comedy. His gift for physical comedy is also brilliant. No bones in his body!!! I always like seeing the price of things on these shows. When they say Richie gets a dollar that's equivalent to 10-15 dollars in purchasing power today. I grew up in the early 60's and a bag of chips could be bought for 5 cents and a can of pop for 12. Generally I think if real people Rob and Laura Petrie wasted money they didn't have. They talk about getting a new projector over 400 dollars. That would be like 9-10 K dollars today....and in the story they have a mortgage. I liked the open concept of their living room kind of open with the swing out doors to the kitchen. The rooms looked a lot more spacious then room of 1950 shows like Lucy.....
