@joebradio Eureka !!! I just drug out an old cassette tape labeled "Summer 1974" and parts of the Scout and Gremlin spots are on there back to back.. I'm beginning to wonder if I taped those from this newscast way back in 74 ...maybe I'm the only one who is geeky enough to find that interesting.

The last commercial asks a very fitting question for a Nixon resignation news program: "You wouldn't sweep dirt under the rug?"
@altfactor
@altfactor 13 жыл бұрын
If my memory serves me correct, NBC's "all evening long continuous coverage" of President Nixon's resignation actually ended up running 22 consecutive hours, until the time that former President had arrived at his California (San Clemente) home (about 4:30 P.M. EDT August 9th). The opening "theme" of "Nightly News" then consisted of a medley of the 1960's NBC hourly radio newscast sounder followed by a sounder that was used in the early 1970's at the end of NBC News television broadcasts.

I believe NBC had live continuous coverage until by then ex-President Nixon had returned to San Clemente late on the afternoon of August 9th, 1974. This means that NBC, including "Nightly News" and a live-in-all-time-zones edition of "The Today Show", would have had about 22 hours of nonstop coverage (6:30 P.M. EDT August 8th-4:30 P.M. EDT August 9th).

The quality of this very good--I'm assuming this was from a 2" quad tape possibly recorded as an aircheck, (or for archivial purposes, considering the nature of the story)) by an NBC affiliate (or the network itself)?

@virnman My family got our first VCR in 1983 (I was in high school). That seems to be a general timeframe when 'most' families took the plunge. Hardcore TV guys, around that same time, already had their 'Betamaxes' for 5 years already. Remember when a blank T-120 could cost upwards of $20 a pop! Of course, when MTS Stereo was introduced in 1984, the VCR was already 'old'....

Back then Coke-Cola really was the real thing. No high fructose corn syrup. REAL sugar. A superior taste. When they switched to HFCS, I certainly noticed the reduction in quality. They never really switched back to the original formula after the "New Coke" fiasco.

Do you have more footage of NBC's coverage of the resignation of P{resident Nixon?? I suspect the reason John Chancellor was in New York and not in Washington) may have been: (1) News about a possible resignation broke that afternoon, and Chancellor might not have the time to fly to D.C., or, (2) Chancellor may have been on vacation, was summoned back to work, and that the only way for him to return to the anchor desk in time for "Nightly" was to return to New York and not to go to D.C.
