This here story is one of *THE* classics. A "little-known" writer named Douglas Adams, wonder if he'll ever write a highly successful book series after this...
@frankshailes3205
@frankshailes3205 3 жыл бұрын
He also wrote the little-known Pirate Planet. Talking of Terry nation recycling stuff (last story), Douglas Adams was eve more guilty of that. Half his books are rehashes of his Dr Who scripts (e.g. Krikkitmen, Shada, and this story)! Still, if you're going to steal, steal from the best.

City of Death is, arguably, THE pinnacle of Douglas Adams’ contribution to Doctor Who, and was the serial in which Julie Gardiner (new Who’s first Executive Producer, alongside Russell T Davies) saw the potential of the series in the 21st century. As for the title, it’s a French pun: “Ville de l’amour” (City of Love) sounds quite similar to “Ville de la mort” (City of Death).

You made a really good point there that I hadn’t thought of before. It feels like the beginning to a doctor who movie. It really does. It is a favourite story, not just because itv were on strike, it has a great leading cast. Paris helps, lol. It feels like it had a budget where some previous stories had almost no budget at all. It’s fresh air to be honest. I think also the fact that the new Davros in the last story was so bad, this story automatically feels better anyway. It’s a high after a low.

Hurray! my username is no longer a spoiler. Phew! As good as City of Death is, a small quibble I do have with it is all the padding of the characters wandering Paris. It's a bit too much for repeated viewings. It includes great visuals and perhaps Dudley Simpson's finest hour as incidental musician, but at the end of the day it IS still padding, and copious amounts of it! At least it's a higher class of padding than what the show of this era would normally give us. I guess the production team were _really_ keen to show off they'd actually been to Paris and was going to make damn sure we knew it! Apparently they justified the location trip by pairing down their filming requirements so that it would have cost about the same to go abroad as it would to have done it all in a BBC studio. Back then I'm pretty sure Doctor Who was unknown in France, so the filming would have elicited no particular interest from Parisians.

This story is amazing! The plot is excellent, the characters are entertaining, and the comedy is absolutely on point. Maybe there are a few too many shots of them walking to places, but I get the impression they wanted to show of that they were filming on location, and it doesn't detract from the story. Bit of Who trivia: When they're on their way to the Louvre, and Romana's listing off alien art galleries, she mentions the Braxiatel Collection. When this episode was written, there wasn't any deeper meaning attached to that, but the expanded media have taken that name and ran with it: The collection's owner, Irving Braxiatel, is now a prominent recurring character in the novels and in several Big Finish ranges. He's a Time Lord who works with a team of his past and future selves to run a black-market art dealing operation, and is often implied (but never confirmed) to be a close relative of the Doctor. I love how Doctor Who lore can take the most obscure throwaway lines from the show and build them into full characters with rich, complex stories of their own!

This is the 10/10 rated story that i mentioned to you the other week the only one in the entire Graham Williams Era a very strong story and strong supporting Cast the two best ingredients of the very best Classic Doctor Who Stories. This was the very First time that the series had overseas Filming in Paris for four days. In those days any Location filming on any Doctor Who story would be done first Graham Williams felt that filming in Paris would add to the story and give it more scope and it certainly works this story is a cut above your Average Graham Williams Story and in my view the Best one of his Era.

One of the more famous cliff-hangers in 20th century Who, this one had my father lunging for the buttons on the TV to change channel, having caught sight at my horrified expression! (Sadly, he wouldn't be able to lunge for anything by the end of the year). With typical Whovian logic, there is no practical way of fitting the expanded green monster skull inside a reproduction of Julian Glover's head - so was this, in part, the inspiration behind the so-called compression field later used by the Slitheen?

Douglas Adams once famously said 'I love deadlines - I love the swooshing sound they make as they go by'. Nowhere is this more accurately pointed up than 'City of Death' (possibly a play on 'City of Love' - think about it...), where he and Graham Williams locked themselves away for a weekend with alternative lashings of whiskey and coffee and rewrote David Fisher's 'The Gamble with Time' more or less from scratch. The influences on the script are many and various, but some people have pointed out resemblances to the 1975 Blake Edwards' comedy 'Return of the Pink Panther'. In the film, Peter Sellers' bumbling Inspector Clouseau is on the trail of 'The Phantom; criminal alter-ego of Christopher Plummer's English aristocrat Sir Charles Lytton. Replace Clouseau with Duggan and Sir Charles with the Count Scarlioni (Julian Glover even wears a variation on Plummer's outfit from the movie) and parallels start to emerge. Add the fact that Catherine Schell - who portrayed Lady Lytton in the movie - plays the strangely compliant Countess here and the evidence looks compelling.

Doctor Who has been set in Paris twice before, in the first season with the Revolution, and another Hartnell story that is now lost, "The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve". Both are historicals and were, of course, studio-based so never got to go to the real France, more's the pity.

Ah, City of Death. It sure is City of Death. I very much agree with your statements at the end about this feeling unlike other Doctor Who stories and really feeling more like the start of a movie. It's very much.... City of Death. I'm not going to comment on the story itself because truly? What's there to say? It has it all. It's City of Death. Per your question about Kerensky's accent, according to the novelization (which I am embarrassed to admit I have listened to on audiobook - because I love how Lalla Ward reads it - more times than I can count) Professor Fyodor Nikolai Kerensky was born in Budapest. Obviously the romance between Ward and Baker gets brought up a lot when talking about this story. I mean they're running around Paris holding hands and grinning at each other. Lalla Ward maintains they were so busy working on the show there was no time whatsoever for any funny business while in Paris, while Tom Baker likes to make jokes about how there were journalists with them and they had to sneak about to evade being spotted together. I ship the Doctor and Romana so I am very biased here, but well... we sure are watching two individuals in that special flush of love running around Paris together, huh?

It's certainly a very highly regarded story - I think it's almost impossible to not enjoy it. It's another of those tiny handful of stories not novelised during my childhood so I knew very little about it until watching it for the first time in the 1990s. It's a real "feel good" watching experience - yet, brilliant though it is, it's not even my favourite story of this season... That's yet to come. :D

This was the first Dr Who anything I ever saw and (we must have missed the beginning bit) it scared the pants off me when teh Count took his face off! I ran out of the room, my mum was worried about me 😅 It's also my favourite Dr Who story ever, despite my initial fear of it I always watched the repeats, eventually bout the dvd... I just checked - I haven't got the dvd. Time to go shopping ;)

I'd knew you'd love this after your wish list from the previous episode. Watching this story (and the previous one) are some of the strongest DW memories I have from my childhood, probably because as you say ITV was on strike so there was no competition. As flawed as it is, I think it is Tom Baker's best story. The location work, special effects, acting talent and writing make it quite unique. Whilst the face removal scene looks a bit fake now, at the time I remember it being a huge talking point at school the next day. I think it was helped by the fact that the Jagaroth look significantly different from any previous humanoid monster in the show.

Okay - I am getting a tiny bit scared here by some of our host's predictions. What did we get earlier? Something about wanting something set on either Earth or a Space ship? EXACTLY! Also, Kerensky - the time scientist - is Hungarian. This story is set in France. What was our host about to watch a few videos ago? The France-Hungary game!!! EXACTLY!!!
