Yes, the fourth Doctor is usually so flippant, it makes those rare moments of genuine outrage all the more chilling, and I find that one particularly memorable!

It’s one of my favorite lines in all of Dr. Who. The captain was such a great villain. This man with a brilliance pretty much on par with a Time Lord’s, but committing atrocities that put many of the Doctor’s long running enemies to shame, and the Doctor’s desperate, anguished plea to just understand why.
@Problembeing

@@McBeelzebub ah - it’s the utter intensity behind it, the incredulity… it’s such a simple line, but profound and anguished :)

It's interesting how Douglas Adams was able to adapt all of the common tropes associated with sea pirates into this story: - A ship - A captain with an eye patch & artificial appendage (mechanical arm instead of a hook) - Attacking other worlds (instead of ports/ships) and looting them for their resources - A plank walk - A mechanical bird (instead of a parrot) - A bookkeeper for the pirates (Mr. Fibuli)

Lots of serials you could react to - 'Quatermass & the Pit', 'Children of the Stones', 'Day of the Triffids' ( 1981 ), 'The Nightmare Man', 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' etc The good thing about serials is that you don't need to make a long commitment to watch them - 6 or 7 parts and you're done.

When, 40 years later, Chris Chibnall explained how a Stenza Warrior's power stemmed from the reduced bodies of planets (in 'The Battle of Ranskoor Ov Kolos' - remember that? Some people don't), fans all over the world were probably shouting: "You mean like the Captain in 'The Pirate Planet'!' ". I know I was. A case example, perhaps, of Salvador Dali's adage that genius may steal where talent merely borrows...

K9's fight with the Polyphase Avatron may well be his finest hour - love how he presents it to the Doctor like a gun dog would present a pheasant. The Doctor's confrontation with the Captain is also a classic moment, and a rare chance to see the flippant fourth Doctor properly angry. Lots of interesting ideas presented here too, a testament to the fertility of Douglas Adams' imagination. I hope your gran is feeling better now. I lost my grandmother just before Christmas at the age of 90, not directly because of Covid but because the need to stay indoors undoubtedly worsened her existing dementia and hastened her mental and physical decline. However, I take comfort from the fact that she was being well looked after in a nursing home at the end.

Given Katy Manning's willingness to talk about clambering over rocks in platform boots (while everything looks a bit blurry), you would think the memo would have reached Costume about footwear on location. Still, compared to the sort of dumps Jo ended up hiding on, Zanak looks positively inviting.

Best wishes to your gran; hopefully she recovers quickly! A while ago, you mentioned that you wanted to see the fourth doctor be more serious (I think it was on that podcast you did), and I remember thinking at the time of the scene where the Captain shows the Doctor the remains of the planets. The Doctor's outrage at that - particularly in the line "You commit mass murder on a scale that's almost inconceivable, and you want me to _APPRECIATE_ it?" - is one of Tom Baker's strongest moments, imo. I see another comment suggested you watch the Netflix series _Dark;_ I'm gonna second that. It's a fantastic series - some of the highest-quality writing I've seen in a while - and there aren't nearly enough good reactions to it on KZbin.

Just ONE sci-fi series I've mentioned before I'd LOVE to see your reactions to, Marie-Clare: BBC's Blakes 7. I can just predict you saying more than twice; "I ABSOLUTELY LOVED that episode!" I'll got out on a limb and suggest you'll say a couple of times; "My heart is racing!".. "He's GORGEOUS!" I can also predict a few tears! I hope I've whetted your appetite, without giving you the slightest clue as to what the series is about. Only that its a British Sci-Fi! The only thing I will say is that each episode is self-contained. No part 1s or part 2s.... No more intros...

I see some have been recommended already by Nordri so may I strengthen his list by suggesting them also, Sapphire and Steel ( a wonderful dark creepy sci-fi Show), Space 1999 ( a brilliant adventure in space), Children of the stones (the scariest children's TV drama ever), Hitch Hikers guide to the Galaxy and Blakes 7 (two great shows from Dr Who Writers) Enjoy :)

Some possible suggestions for future shows below: 'The Musketeers' (it may be BBC, but the plethora of hunky blokes in it - plus Peter Capaldi - would doubtless make up fro that, yes...?) 'The Time Tunnel' 'Rome' (HBO/BBC) 'Sharpe' 'Blackadder' 'The Goodies' 'The A-Team' 'Knight Rider' 'Batman '66' 'Lois & Clark' (aka 'The New Adventures of Superman') 'Transformers' (G1) Other people in the comments have already suggested the likes of 'The Incredible Hulk', 'Hitchhikers', and the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series, and any one of them would be great too, yes...?

Douglas Adams would later express dissatisfaction with how some actors performed his scripts; particularly when it came to over-playing the comedy aspects. But when you have cyborg sea captains quoting Arthur C Clarke, K-9 turned into a 'Bird Dog' and a cliffhanger that is - perhaps more than usually - a cliff-hanger... what are you supposed to do?
