My favourite of the Atari 8-bit models and one of the most practical. It also has Missile Command built in, which you enable by turning it on without the keyboard attached and no game inserted. The game library is awesome, always discovering great games for it.
@johneysupergd77969 ай бұрын
The most freaking awesome part of the atari xe was not only it’s practicality but also the fact that many nintendo games did came out for it,as a nintendo fan, i found that pretty cool because for decades i trought that there were no nintendo games on whether other system let alone atari systems,i always trought that there were atleast nintendo clone rip offs of it as an alternative such as let’s say donkeykong to be called ‘hero canterpenter’ or a’ngry gorilla hunter’ or let’s call donkeykong jr to be ‘baby gorilla hero’ while mario bros could be called ‘sewer crab chasing heros’ etc,,, But that was most not the case nope, these were official nintendo games on atari system,how wild is that😁👍
@KetilEspens10 жыл бұрын
My first game system and still one of my favourites. Missile Command is built into the system. It will start up automatically without the keyboard attached and by holding select when starting up with keyboard. Great review!
@johneysupergd77969 ай бұрын
You know what,the atari XE is just a f@cking AWESOME timeless with freaking AWESOME games such as mariobros,donkeykong,donkeykong jr,pac man, frogger etc,,,, And so i bought one along with those nintendo games for it with more to come ,i just wait till it will come across my doorstep so it will become another part of my cool awesome atari collection for it🙏😁👍

Did you get an XEGS or other A8 model? IMO they are the best Atari machine made. Well the 7800 has a much better graphics chip but the 8bit computer has a far bigger game library and much better sound and much more as it is an actual computer. New games coming out still to this day made by the community.

I miss my Atari XE. It was sold at a garage sale 12 or 13 years ago for a song. :'( It had some great games such as Archon, Bug Hunt (with gun controller), Donkey Kong, Blue Max, GATO, Desert Falcon, etc... That was a HUGE gaming faux pas to let my parents sell it.

Man I remember this system, we got one when I was a kid after are 800 series computer stopped working. Great system that worked well into the late 90's but then my mother gave it to good will or something. It outlasted my Nintendo by years and we got it like a year earlier. Pretty sure my mother gave it to goodwill or something, just remember being mad when I found out it was gone.

The Atari XEGS was a superior effort at repackaging an 8-bit micro as a games console. Compare and contrast to Commodore's half-arsed effort, the C64GS. They took out all the ports except joystick and RF, and left no provision for a keyboard. With no serial disk drive port, and no tape drive port, they ensured that all games had to be on cartridge. (What a shame that there were only a handful of games developed, and a few older games converted.) They then had the brilliant idea of selling it at the same or higher price than an actual C64. You had to hand it to Commodore.
@VVhistory6 жыл бұрын
So it cant play atari 7800, 5200 or 2600 games?
@ClassicTVMan1981X2 жыл бұрын
@@VVhistory No, but the XEGS could play the older 400/800 and XL cartridges. All of Atari's 8-bit computers already had TV hook-up, joystick support and cartridge slots, so despite them being marketed as home computers with built-in keyboards they could also be game consoles.
@ClassicTVMan1981X2 жыл бұрын
@@VVhistory And as to the C64GS, there was a bevy of reasons for its short shelf life -- among them were: a. Limited software support. b. Relation to C64 computer -- essentially a cut-down version. c. Instantly obsolete -- the C64 computer first came out in 1982. d. Console market already saturated -- since the C64GS first came out in 1990, its chance of besting Nintendo's NES and SNES, and Sega's Genesis, was very slim. e. TV hook-up, joystick support and cartridge slots were all already available on the C64 computer.
@martok21125 жыл бұрын
Ahhh...back in the good ol' days, when, if you had a 64K computer system, you had a badass home computer! LOL! I think my favorite game, of the few I had for the XE, was Rescue on Fractalus.... which scared the bezeejus out of me one time....not bad for an 8 bit game that looked like an advanced Atari 2600 title. LOL! I loved speeding through the very, very basic looking mountains in first person view, listening for the homing signal and searching for places to set down to rescue my lost astronauts. I also enjoyed Star Raiders II, which was originally The Last Starfighter. I honestly did not know, though, that there were THAT many games available for it. Wow! I miss my old XE, and my Atari 800XL (with all the trimmings) from back in the day.

Aside from some memory configuration differences that the carts negated, the 5200 and XE were basically based on the same Atari 8-bit computer line. So they released the 2600, 5200, 7800 then 5200 again. Progress.

Except that it was a full computer, and compatible with all software and peripherals. And the 64KB made it easy for them to port disk games to carts, as it loaded the contents to RAM, just like the disk game code (otherwise they would require extensive re-coding to use bank switching), along with allowing all the software to run and the general ability to use 64KB in computing.

Seems like those 3-button Genesis controllers remain pretty sturdy and awesome if you take care of them right. I tried using them out on my ColecoVision several times but I feel like that defeated the purpose of playing ColecoVision. Half the challenge is wrestling with it's awkward joystick... things. I do use the Genesis controller on my Atari 2600 though for the time being because I need some new 2600 joysticks. I only had one good one left and now it's starting to give up the ghost.

Atari wanted to cash in on the video game revival, but they didn't want to have to design a new machine. The 5200 had some flaws, the 2600 was considered obsolete and the 7800 didn't have a very big software library. So all they did was take an existing Atari 8-bit computer, make the keyboard detachable, change the case and call it a game system. A new system with minimal work and it had a pretty large library of games. People weren't scared of it because the keyboard was optional and it was labeled as a game system, even though they could have done the exact same things with an Atari computer. I suppose it makes sense, but I still wish they had thrown their support behind the 7800.
