When people think of innovation in video games, they tend to gravitate towards Nintendo even though there are companies that have made just as significant innovations if not more significant. The Playstation and Dualshock 1 controllers are perfect examples of significant non-Nintendo innovation (revolution as well). Dual analog controllers as well as four shoulder buttons are THE standard for home consoles.

You just have to love these controllers.They are perfect.They are right weight,very comfortable for longer periods of time and they never friggin brake!My first Dualshock for PSOne (the white one) survived a lot of falls on floor and bangs,and it still fully works!Sony knows high quality.

Maybe you could answer a question I've been curious about for a while now? What's the little, square indent in the plastic above where the wire goes into the controller for? A lot of controllers seem to have it like the NES, SNES, PSX, PS2 etc. Is it just a result of the manufacturing process or is there another reason for it?

mine is SCPH-110 (dualshock 1) and MAN! best review i ever seen! i didn know that ps2 X button is sensitive to pressure... you know harder you push faster you move (gran turismo)... and my dualshock 1 is little bit lighter, and it has the analog buttons, (L3, R3)

The DualShock 1 was way better than the original standard PS1 controller because the DualShock 1 had vibration features, and it had an analog button where you could turn the analog light and vibration on and off. The original standard PS1 controllers didn't have analog and they didn't have the vibration feature.

The SIXAXIS is a tilt sensor, that's what a tilt sensor does, it's the same technology behind the Wii's Nunchuck. You could argue that Sony rushed the Sixaxis just to not look lame compared to the Wiimote, but they fixed it later by adding rumble. And they are coming out with a new motion controller as well.

@broli3110 The 360 pad and the Wiimote are also wireless, support rechargable batteries, and the Wiimote has full blown motion controller, unlike the 360 pad. The DS3 has a tilt sensor, that's it.

The Dualshock wasn't even the first analog controller for the Playstation. Their first attempt was called the Dual Analog, which had a very short production run and release. It sported longer handles and plastic, concave joysticks. I managed to find a couple a while back, but they're pretty rare and hard to find.

dual shock 1 was what drew me to ps1. Same for ps2. ps3 had sixaxis which was ok but had low battery life so i got dual shock 3 for mgs 4 on my yloded ps3. The one i got in '08 that doesn't play ps2 still is alive and well. the ds4 will do good for ps4. Sharing stuff on ps4 will be fun.

Yup. They click, like a normal button, but are pressure sensitive too. Not bad for throttle/brakes in Gran Turismo et al.

There's even another variation of the DualShock controller. The DualShock controller version that came with the smaller PSOne (and says PSOne on the controller) says Model# SCPH-110 (at least the one I have does) and has an even smaller more rounded plug. Also, not mentioned in this review is mention of the Sony 'Dual Analog' controller, which had no rumble, concave thumbsticks and slightly longer handles as well as a flightstick mode.

There is a controller you left out, the analogue controller without dual shock. It was larger than the dual shock controller and had indents in the thumbsticks that were not rubberised. It was released before Dual Shock. I got one with my first playstation and I think its the best one to get if the others are too small for you and you are getting hand cramps.
