The story is that you're actually a TRAINEE spaceship pilot for the first five levels. I guess when an alien invasion happens, our army must be so bad we need to send a trainee to fight them. The Famicom version has a couple of odd changes that I've noticed. It has one extra screen in the opening with the ship launching, as I recall. And the palettes are changed slightly, so in the Famicom version we get a space black background, compared to the NES blue ocean. And they also added or removed (I forget which way they went) rapid fire (holding the shoot button) to the NES version.

One of my favorite shooters on the NES & very hard. The only shooter harder than this is Zanac, but that game is just insanity.

Try the PC Engine version of Image Fight (much better) or Image Fight II on the PC Engine CD.

PC engine: that's Japanese version of the Master System isn't it? I've only recently realised that the Master System was so much better than the NES. Just never had the iconic games to match it's power.

Kj16V PC Engine is the Japanese version of the TurboGrafx 16, although it was more popular and had a much larger library in Japan than in NA.

@@ScottMurphy76 do you know if this is the version on PSN offered through hamster corporation??? Not sure why they choose that name for a company, but they're probably rolling in the dough after acquiring all the space shooters they can from the 80s/90s.

Brian C , I didn’t even know image fight was on the PSN. Is it on PS4? Or PS3?

I hadn't considered the similarities between this and R-Type, but the resemblance is striking in places, which I have no problems with. Great review! :D

My God the sound is absolutely brutal. Too be perfectly honest, had I picked this up in 1990 I would have been extremely dissatisfied with it. By that point (anytime in 1990) I had a Sega Genesis and I rarely played my Nes. When I did it was generally for Ninja Gaiden or Super Mario Brothers 3. Image Fight looks like a very, very early Nes game from 1985 or 1986.

IREM did make one fairly easy (as I recall) shooter, though. A license-based game for the Famicom called Taiyou no Yuusha (Hero of the Sun) Firebird (or Faibird, some call it). A pretty decent game, with a few characters (with different vehicles, as I recall). The only tricky part as I recall was one level where (as I remember) the Select button was needed to activate ground switches to progress (normally I think it was a menu button of some kind). I had been playing a fan-translation of the game that omitted translating that part.

I love the arcade original, including the music. The NES version is a decent conversion that doesn't do the music of the arcade game justice.

The arcade version has excellent music. This NES version can't compare. The best is the track for the last level, "FINAL MISSION". The composer (same guy who did the soundtrack to X-Multiply, check out that soundtrack too) said it was actually supposed to be the track for the first stage, but the rest of the developers switched it up.

I do have this version, but I also have the one on PS1 bundled with X-Multiply, but that version is quite expensive. I did get lucky and got my copy for $57, passed it up in a shop in San Antonio, but a forumer I know picked it up for me, paid him price ($50) plus the 7 bucks for taxes and shipping (which to be honest was not bad at all). If I play this one, it will be the PS1 version (1 of 4 Arcade Gears releases, PS1 got only 3 of the 4, Saturn got all 4, the 4th being Gun Frontier from Taito).

I wish this game wasn't ignored in its time. It had a bit of a legacy in Japan, and inspired a number of designers in one way or another. It was very much a gamer's game. Had they put the it forward as a semi-spiritual follow up to R-Type, I would have checked it out for sure. Instead I just thought it was some generic shooter with a dumb title.

I much prefer the Pc engine version, better visuals, far better music and controls. Brutally difficult game that requires absolute perfect performance, in a similar fashion to R-Type.

PS1 and Saturn versions, though pretty expensive, are far closer to the arcade original quite honestly. The sequel however was PCE CD only.

I have an *unofficial* version of image fight/x-multiply on the Saturn and yes it's arcade perfect, pretty much at least. I feel Lord Karnage would really enjoy X-Multiply, it's right up his alley.
