This is probably the best fmv game you'll find, as it's fast paced and very enjoyable. I really like the atmosphere and visuals. It's very similar to Total Eclipse, which uses polygons, and is better in some ways. Both games show that the 3DO was a cool machine for its time. I will be playing this game again.

I like how the art style of this game looks. I don't think I've ever seen a game that looks like this.

I remember seeing this for the first time on Gamesmaster in the uk and my jaw hit the floor. Then soon after I brought a 3DO FZ1 and still have it to this day. Under rated console.

Wow. I absolutely forgot about this game! I owned it for PC and I remember me and 5 friends taking turns playing it. At that time, we thought graphics could never get more realistic than that.I miss the time...

It sounded and looked as cool as inconsistent...some parts were great but not everything was convincingly integrated...back then they started experimented with integrating live action filmed scenes with animation and it didn't work very well. See games like 7th Guest (enjoyable puzzle game though). A much tighter art direction would have helped but these guys were clearly going for a simple shooter game in an ultra cool package. You felt a bit cheated with the background camera on rails, not having much control and just shooting at stuff with a pre-rendered backdrop. The Rebel Assault games from the wonderful Lucasarts were probably the best in this genre.

This game was epic! I think it was one of the BEST shooters for the 3DO. The music and the gameplay was totally awesome despite the slow ups. This game I think was ahead of its time. *sigh* I miss my 3DO.

I have this for the PC, it's more advanced (you get "credits" from enemies which you can collect and use to buy powerups). The music isn't CD quality, but it's still very good. I never knew this was made for 3DO, but it makes sense, considering the cutscenes and gameplay style. On the PC, the cutscenes don't even work, they are jerky.

What's amazing is that today's consoles can generate realtime-rendered 3D graphics that look more realistic than the CGI in this game. But these graphics were awesome for the time it came out.

The visuals on the 3do version are really slick, but the soundtrack of the PC version (by Rik Ede) is epic and gives the music of this version a run for the money. You have to search it up on youtube. The PC soundtrack of this game is legend.

@girochin007 I kinda feel your pain. I actually don't have X-Wing, but I do have X-Wing Alliance and it doesn't work anymore either. =( You might wanna try DOSBox though. And X-Wing Alliance might work on VMWare (in a Win98 machine w/ HW acceleration), but I'm too lazy to try it.

@wolfmap Actually I thought it could be more realistic, since Doom and many FPS games came out in the 90s. I always told myself that some day, we will have facial recognition to completely mimic human and creature movements in video games, that we couldn't tell the difference between movie and video game quality.

3DO is very underated, and is unfairly associated with the CDi. It actually had a decent library for its time. Definitely better video quality than the Sega Mega CD and CDi. I would say it was the first to get the best ports of arcade or PC games. It's too bad the expensive price made it lose to other systems. It also has a Mega Drive like gamepad, which I guess is good, but I still would prefer SNES styled like today's controllers.

I want to correct part of what I said: "The music isn't CD quality, but it's still very good. " The PC music is not SAMPLED music, like an MP3 (I guess that it uses a tracker format, xm or .it), but it is excellent anyway, much better than the 3DO's soundtrack.

So would I, but the 3DO version is interesting in its own right. Weirdly, although the 3DO version is a tweaked port of the original Fm Towns version, it has a different soundtrack, while the Sega CD port has a conversion of the FM Towns soundtrack but plays differently.

@vittau I would be happy if they just re-released X-Wing so it was playable on a current platform... Mostly because I paid $50 for the strategy guide, and the 3.5" floppies the game came on died, so I'm $100+ into that game already, and can't play it now.
