I bought a cdi back in the 90's just so I could play dragons lair 2. It was cheaper than buying the arcade cabinet. Then I fell in love with space ace, dragons lair 1, kingdom 1 and 2, burn cycle, and zeldas adventure. I loved cdi for all its quirks and I still have it today, although I don't play it anymore.

you want to know something crazy and prepare to call me an idiot. I actually thought that the cutscenes from Hotel Mario were just animations people drew up in Microsoft Paint, and was voiced silly, and was fake. I thought that was all on purpose. Then I found out they were from Hotel Mario, a real game, and I facepalmed for a very long time, not just at myself, but at the poor business decision's Phillip's made.

Speaking of rich people I found this advertisement for the first model of the Philip CD-I and its very persuasive. So I copied it to give everyone a chance to see what made the CD-I so alluring. 1991 advertisement: Hello there! May I ask you some questions? Terrific! Are you bored with life? Are you tired of having to much money? Do you think you can top that bad decision you made when you bought that Philippino hooker that gave you AIDS? If the answer is yes then you are on your way of being a proud owner of a Philip CD-I! There is something in it for the entire family. It can keep the misses occupied with a poor selection of movies while you go out for more hookers, haha priceless. Have kids? Let them play the Philip CD-I edition of zelda and they will never want to play another game again! Now, you are probably saying what's in it for me? Besides looking like a completely dumb asshole you will be seen by your peers as a someone who uses money to compensate for a small dick! So friend take that .45 out your mouth and pick up the phone to order a CD-I today. Call in the next ten minutes and you will receive coupons for douche kits at your local store. Don't forget to call today!!!

This is the first time I've seen a CDI in action, Strange but cool console :) I love how the early 90's had a flood of competitors in the gaming market. Crazy to think Nintendo where releasing games on other consoles during the same time there own console was out.

It's one of my favorite consoles. Have 4 different models and all the controllers available for it. Great thing (and not so great) you can use whatever controller you like to play any game you want. It's also the reason why controles aren't that responsive, because every input method is different. I have about 87 games for it and really like games like: burn:cycle, lucky luke, secret mission, the apprentice, hotel mario, 7th guest, mutant rampage bodyslam. If you give the system a change and look at it in the perspective when it came out, it is impressive what the machine could do.

On CDs in the 90s - I didn't get my first device that could play CDs 'til i got a PS1 in 1998 and i didn't get a radio with a CD player 'til 1999 :) . When i bought my first car, a 2000 Focus in 2005, it still had a tape player in it, thankfully the garage i bought it from swapped out the tape player for a CD player as part of the sale, but i still had to ask them to do it :) .

90s technology is so incredible and unmatched in history. Behold the splendor and wonder of the magical inventions at 2:25. I'm pretty sure if one possessed EVERYTHING pictured there, one would have the power to control the world, and probably time and space as well. Who found that CDs with "CD+G" printed on the inside ring would play imagery while playing the disc in the CD-i???? I believe Jimi Hendricks Are You Experienced Album had this... I remember watching it...
@videogameobsession10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there were quite a few CD' s which had the +G info, but didn't even make mention of it. The Jimi Hendrix Smash Hits CD was neat. CD music and NES quality graphics was an interesting mix hehe. I bought a few more CD+G discs that I could find; Fleetwood Mac's Behind the Mask, and Information Society come to mind. Also, the "Rock Paintings" disc that came with the Sega-CD was also CD+G and worked in the CD-i.

it's easy to make fun of the cd-i now but when it came out people were playing stamp sized video on their PCs and kids with 8 or 16 bit consoles were drooling over games like Chaos Control, Burn Cycle, Dragon's Lair or Escape from Cybercity. It played audio cd, video cd and karaoke. It had adult titles and hundreds of professional, multimedia and educational titles. Multimedia at the time was new and the cd-i looked very impressive

Now, I'm really hoping for a CGR review of the CD32 or the CDTV! You've just got to review Microcosm on the CD32!! Lemmings is good on any format, and apparently Hotel Mario wasn't too bad.

I'm a bit tired of reviewers picking apart the CD-i for comical purposes. It's been done over and over again. The CD-i was never intended to be billed as a "game console". It's a format. It's basically CDRom for your TV. Back in 1990 a PC CDROM and additional card to run it was $900 and the CDi did many things.. 1. It played music CD's (and was one of the best quality players l) 2. Video CD (White Book) the precursor to DVD. Many movies were released in this format. 3. Kodak Photo-CD (digital photos on your TV) 4. Reference material archives (Being able to access a full fledged encyclopedia with audio and video archives was a brand new concept). 5. and of course games...

Born to Die I don't think the CD-i is that bad of a device (I hate it when people call it a game console), either. Honestly, it was a really great educational tool, and it does have some pretty cool interactive programs. Sure, a lot of the games were pretty bad, but there were even some pretty decent games like Lemmings, Secret Mission, Kingdom: The Far Reaches, etc.

The CD-I does have some excellent games for it, but the console itself (regardless of which model you choose) is extremely expensive. And the only controller, other then the mouse, worth buying for it, is a 3-button Genesis style controller which can go for several hundred dollars on ebay. Ebay is pretty much the only place you're going to find a CD-I, and games and controllers for it.
