There is such charm to the old minis, that Judge Dredd type gritty yet comedic style tickles my brain in a way that the modern minis just can't compete with. I feel like some modern bloodbowl minis are close to the quirkiness of the older stuff, but there's a certain magic that is just difficult to replicate.
@philhelm1318

I think that part of the magic was that the older miniatures weren't tied to sanitized IP and artwork.

I miss the era of GW. Felt they were more invested in boxed games rather than churning out stuff for 40k or warhammer,they have become more of a “ we have new mini you must by.. and the stuff was so much cheaper back then. I still have space hulk, also wanted blood bowl and final got it. Did pick up a game called dark future always wanted that. I do miss those days. I prefer the painting styles too. Cheers for the vid.

GW in the late '80s and early '90s GW was a much different and much more friendly company and they didn't bend the customer over a barrel if you wanted a new character or troop type for your army. Prices were very reasonable, and they didn't fuck around with these "seasons", they didn't force the gamer to keep buying more and more rules supplements and locking away new figures in unwanted boxed sets and Land Raiders were $15 or $18 a pop!

Adeptus Titanicus/Space Marine started the whole deep dive into GW for me. I owned Rogue Trader but never played it but one day at a local convention, I watched an Epic tournament for a few hours and immediately was hooked. It continues to be one of my favorite games and I still own everything I purchased for it on the small chance that I can find some friends to play some 6mm games (or even Epic again). Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Epic/SM was such a better game in my opinion, rules were slicker, tons of variety in the armies and the scale just makes so much more sense than 40k ever did - you were fighting across whole cities and tower blocks, not some crappy hill, a couple of trees and a ruin.

My (89-90?) pots of Bestial Brown, Chaos Black and Imperial Purple are still completely workable; in fact I used a mix of the purple and some Contrast Medium to create a filter for a batch of Space Hulk Genestealers recently. The Shining Gold however spoiled decades ago, I remember the yellow pigment split from the metallic flake within months of first opening it and the clotted consistency is now a lot like GW's DRY range. Still, with wads of poster putty they all regularly see use as improvised paint handles.

@jeremiahembs5343 Жыл бұрын
Bestial brown is the old pots is an extremely rare paint, photograph it and make a color swatch if you can, there's no brown being made just like it, the imperial purple is also very rare, if you want a good replacement for the gold try warcolours classic 88 line their metallics are very close but the medium is better and doesn't clump, but I liked dry brushing with the old metallics

I was in Montery, CA when Advanced Space Crusade and Space Hulk came out. The local hobby store opened a few boxes for the store games and sold the minis off dirt cheap so I had a bunch of the scouts, genestealers, Tyranids, hybrids, etc. All sold off most of them during a financial crisis but I still have three of the Tyranids, two of which have broken arms which was common for those minis.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay switched from being published by GW to being published by Flame Publications (which was still part of GW) around 1989. Then it got licensed out to Hogshead Publishing in the mid 90s when GW completely abandoned publishing RPGs. The license has been bouncing around to various publishers ever since.

Advanced Heroquest is actually more like a prototype version of what Warhammer Quest would eventually be. Modular boards, more advanced character options and certain (albeit limited) opportunities for actual role-playing. It even had conversion charts for the original Heroquest characters if you felt so inclined. I still have my copy and the revenge of the lichmaster supplement. It's currently in a stack in my basement with Space Hulk, 40k 2nd ed, Heroquest, Man O' War and a couple other non-GW games. Good times...

Mighty Empires is was... I mean, a bit like multiplayer Civilisation, minus the tech tree. Each player starts with a city, randomly generates what's in the 6 surrounding tiles, and then raise *and supply* armies and go explore the map (each hex randomly generated the first time an army scouts it) for 6 turns, when wizards could cast spells at the autumn equinox and your armies had to retire to winter quarters, and all sorts of other fun stuff.

Loved playing the 1993 MS-DOS Space Hulk on 3.5 floppy disc, then the CD-DVD. “Brothers, to us and us alone…” Actually, I still play the CD game with DosBox… The “real-time” aspect makes it way more difficult than Space Hulk: Tactics, which is awesome, too!

Talisman 2e is a very slender game and the expansions suffer from horrendous feature creep, but among my favourite gaming memories was a sprawling game involving all the expansion boards spread over two tables on the last day of a con. Over three hours everyone got really invested in it, yet two weeks later neither I nor the other player who lived in my home town could remember who won - it was all about seeing the game develop. This, I think, is the mark of a good hobby game; like a road trip, it's about the journey, not the destination. (Or at least that's what I tell myself. It helped me cope at the same con the following year when I lost a game of 40K so badly my force was actually wiped out to the last man).

Blood Bowl 2020 is in a great state right now imo but part of me wishes I had experienced the early days. Then again many traditions remain in the community, like the classic of getting a set of warhammer fantasy models and clipping their weapons off.

I love my mother. She raised me and taught me how to be a decent human being. BUT I will never ever forgive her for giving away all my games work shop minis when I moved away from home to go to university in the late 80s. I had the harlequins and terminator boxes waitng for me to paint when I came home for Christmas break. That was a frosty holiday lol

I miss the old Ork Gargants. I wish they'd bring them back. Personally I think every Ork Clan should be given their own unique aesthetics and codexes. The old more civilized version of the Orks from Rogue Trader and 2nd edition could be brought back for the Blood Axes personal style. In short, the Blood Axes would be more expensive to field but better trained and organized with higher quality equipment.

Mighty empire was a bit odd if memory serves me right. It tried to be a board game in itself. But seemed better suited for playing wfb campaign's. You had towns and cities that could provide sustenance for different sized armies represented by tokens. The armies would represent points values for you model armies and battles would be fought as normal wfb games. Something expanded on much later with those 40k plastic hex set thingies. Had most of the boardgames. Can't wait for your video on advanced space crusade. I think a very underrated game with huge possibilities. I would love for a modern day retake on this. Who knows with 10th ed 40k and the 4th tyrannic war?

These were the « peak » years for Citadel/GW. Strangely, their products became less beginner/family-friendly after they became publicly-listed. I certainly miss the cartoony aesthetics and open-endness of their game ecosystem.

I remember all this very well, I got into the Warhammer hobby in 1990 and I really wanted to find more like-minded people but sadly I could not while living in posh Boca Raton, FL; simply no one had heard of this "nerdy crap" back then. Nor did I have the money to buy the armies I wanted while working as a bag boy at $3.25/hour part time at the local grocery store. I was in high school, my folks were fairly strict so even on the weekend I could not enjoy my hobby and I was very much in the minority, if there were gamers around, they were AD&D only. Boy, have times changed!!
