This model really shows off the classic Lego build techniques. Lego was just learning how to do angles and the hinged construction was the way to make it happen. The parts inventory was very simple - This set pre-dates numbered bags, so finding the part you need is harder. Thus all the elements of a certain size were all the same colour. This makes the model very easy to assemble, which is important to Lego's classic market. I think Lego vastly underestimated what people wanted in terms of Star Wars toys. The first few years' models were all simple like this one. Once the second generation of models came out, starting around late 2003, you can see they vastly improved the designs, used more pieces, and built models that adults would like better.

One thing many new lego sets lacks these days are actual play spaces. They are so tight and crammed there really is very little space. Sure many people like to just have them for viewing pleasure, but there are kids who play with these sets or adults as well.

I believe that the 'non canonical vehicle' inside the ship may actually be based off of the escape pod that was supposedly located within the ship. Having got a toy, not lego, version of the falcon in around 2007 it also had a small vehicle like this in that exact same space. Hope that helps!

I miss these types of sets. They really fit with all other lego, whereas nowadays even the basic pieces in lego sets are clearly star wars brand parts. I also love that the '99 sets weer made to build and take apart over and over. Nowadays the lego I see in stores and with my little cousins is a kind of build once to play with or display, and it's so different. I never got this falcon cause my family was poor, but I got like, 5 landspeeders and vaporator sets and stuff, and the best part was being able to assemble and dissemble the sets in one sitting (also the boxes had alternate sets to build which were fun to figure out). It was just so much more involved than it seems like lego is now, and I miss that.

I remember getting this set as a kid and I loved it, I didn't care at all about the weird colours, I guess as a kid I was much more tolerant. But still there is such an abundance of wrong colours so it almost seems intentional and cheerful, it's really a play model for kids and not a super serious collectors thing to just rot in a shelf. What I would give to be 6 years old again : D

In 2000, I had been married for one-year and had just graduated from law school. I was an adult! Independent! On my way to success! I hadn’t bought a toy or a Lego set in over a decade. I still loved Star Wars but purchased expensive, movie-accurate replica props, like lightsabers and blasters. And then I remember seeing the Lego Millennium Falcon for sale, and I haven’t regretted a day of Lego collecting and building as an AFOL since.

7:24 My brother and I built a second "escape pod" just like the one the set came with and would place it on the other ramp. We also built a turret for the underside and mounted a competition cannon in the hollow space toward the front of the ship. It was a blast to customize. Newer sets come with such tiny pieces and are so detailed its sometimes hard to see any room for customizability.

That “Speeder” is in fact a canonical thing. It is in fact meant to be a small ship (I think it’s a escape pod) that is stored in the side of the falcon. One of Hasbros Millennium Falcon ships actually included it.

So now that I have some experience with one version of it--I'm stoked to see the history of the ship and how it evolved over the years through Lego. I do agree that Legos are more fun to play with than store in a glass box. One of the reasons I Was really excited for the Falcon (the new one) was all the open interior space meant I could totally revamp it!

I think it's pretty good since in modern sets you don't get too much space to add your own things and even if there is then it looks sort of out of place, but with this it has a lot of place and it doesn't have too much detail so what you add won't look too different exept maybe the colors since they make different ones now, anyways this is prob one of my favorite old sets.

I think that the basic shape is much better here than in the newer models. In particular, the transition from the two front fangs to the main body of the ship. The newer models look like saucers that had those fangs crudely attached to them, while here there is a seamles transition.

You forgot to show the hatch just below the quad laser canon 4:28 - looking at the instructions, it seems you can actually seat a minifig inside that kind of hidden space, to control the canon (although there are no controls). As for the "ribbed hose piece" used for the engines 3:56 - isn't that rather similar to the pipe/tube used in the most recent Falcons, including UCS 75192?

Dude, I think the one I have is older than yours and the reason why is at the end of the instructions, I saw there was a little image saying exactly where to put the landing struts. Mine doesn't have that. I always thought they went into the square holes on the bottom panels, but the little image makes way more sense. My instructions are complete, they just don't have that one small image. I guess LEGO received a few complaints and they added those it in for clarification.
