I had the Northern Pacific "628" set growing up! My dad gave it to Me in the 70s along with a bunch of track, buildings and such. I had a great time with them!

It's interesting to note that there was a 100 ton switcher that was made I think by GE... the Lionel 44 ton looks much more like it than it does the model it was supposed to represent. I saw the 100 ton on line.

If anyone is interested, there's a 44 toner for sale in North Conway NH. It is owned by the State of NH but it is stored at the Conway Scenic Railroad. If you go on KZbin or Google you can see it on one of the turntable stalls. I don't know how much the state is asking for the locomotive.

I have two 628s, one I haven't fixed yet, the other I bought and customized (the shell was damaged) when I was still a bit newer to toy trains. It's interesting that Lionel's model is in fact rather oversize for O scale. I believe this is because Lionel did not wish to produce a new type of motor-truck, as the real GE 44-tonner uses a smaller truck than Lionel's postwar switchers.

I bought one of the 144 ton switchers around 2000. It runs great, and with two motors has plenty of power.

ironfox7 No, the size of that model is much closer to 144 tons than 44. A scale model would probably be half that size. I can’t call it a 44 ton switcher and keep a straight face.

I have the Northern Pacific 628, how do i find out how old it is and how much it is worth? Excellent condition

The 628 was catalogued in 1957/58. The best way to find out the value is to watch a few sales at ebay. Currently there are 5 listed with the option buy it now starting at 49.95.

Not that I know from the existing literature and my own observations. Why do you ask? There are some customized locos on the market.
