Cars 20 years and older are classic that's just how it works, brand, model, condition or anything else doesn't matter after 20 years it's classic

Here’s the thing. Back in the 80s, NOBODY would have denied that cars from the 50s were classics. Guess what? Cars from the 80s are now OLDER than cars from the 50s were back in the 80s. And cars from the 90s are about as old. Why the double standard when it comes to modern classics?

Quote frankly I find this emissions testing to be nothing more than a cash grab and just a way to rake folks over. I’ve lived in Vegas for 13 years (originally from Ohio) and have always found it stupid, being that newer cars are as clean emissions wise as an internal combustion engine can possibly provide. Trying to pay 400+ dollars which many people, and let’s be honest, don’t have to pull out their rear end to get an affidavit is ridiculous. Older cars I can see being worried about, but not really because they’re what? OLD! You can’t expect the, to be the same as newer cars pollution wise. And certain no one will have their liberties be stripped either owning them. And having to do it every damn year is aggravating. Modern engines are built so well (even the poorest made ones), that if taken care of, nothing changes in terms of emissions sometimes for years. We’ve basically perfected evap systems, electronic management, catalytic substrates, and more. I can see testing cars every 2 years or 3 but nothing less. And being required to do it to even convert your title to a nevada one is also idiotic. I’ve had to part with many car because of a annoying code like a P0420, which means to repair it with new converters is more than the cars worth. Especially ooh older vehicles. If many denser eastern states don’t need it, why do we who live in an practically empty desert state do? I say let the folks have their loopholes and get rid of the program. Time for folks to speak up and make these lawmakers be more honest and fair.

In Texas you don’t have to get classic car registration your car just has to be 25 years or older and you’re exempt

Thank you for this I'm currently looking to move out of California and move to a place where my modified vehicles don't need to be smogged. They are definitely older than 25 years. Would I still need to take it in for a visual inspection? I doubt I would pass that 😂

From 1995- 2013 is was completely justified. Now? Is just a state revenue bullshit, taking more and more money out of our pockets. The majority of vehicles in the road are newer and EVs , yet they still require this bullshit.

Could you please revisit this. I have a Mustang that is not 20 years old but will not pass smog due to bad O2 sensors, apparently. The smog shops do not check the actual emissions from the tail pipe like they used to, they simply hook up an OBD scanner & rely on codes from the computer. We need to have the option of using tail pipe emissions as well when the car fails smog from the OBD port due a Check Engine light (or other codes) when the car may not actually be putting out harmful emissions.

Just cut the wiring at both ODB ports. That'll force them to default to manual-based measurement of tail pipe emissions

In all honesty, the Lawmakers are at fault for leaving obvious loopholes and being so naive as to think the "honor system" of mileage reporting would be honored by owners. It's all very simple really. If you exempt classic cars from emission testing then you must issue a specialized plate that limits their usage to a few thousand miles a year. That is all an enthusiast needs to show his classic car off. Instead of mailing an emission test card, you issue a mileage verification card annually. The owner takes the car to a center where mileage is verified and if in excess, the plates are revoked except when extenuating circumstances can be proved. Past emissions laws varied by state. Mine required emissions testing applicable to the year the car was made. When mine didn't pass due to extensive engine performance modifications, my plates were revoked by the state and I had to apply for a special-use antique vehicle plate allowing driving only to an organized event or repair shop. The insurance companies also were in the loop and exempted coverage outside of the special-use conditions. My choices were to accept the limited usage restrictions or restore the engine and emissions controls back to their OEM function. This is clearly an over-reaching first step by the Democrats to shove their "New Green Deal" down the throats of US Citizens any way they can, including sugar coating it for the under-privileged with promises of subsidized electric vehicles from the proceeds of the attendant penalties and fines.

Once again just like the tax laws , wealthy and let’s say hey certain demographics of people, who clearly can’t afford to get their cars smog don’t have to pay to get a smog but the common person who has an old car because that’s all they can afford and they can’t afford to get upgraded parts on their car and expensive work done are supposed to pay the fees ,while people with cars that they have spent over $40-$50,000 on don’t have to pay anything. The law should be equal across the board , The reason why classic cars are exempt because they can afford lobbyists to give money to the state assembly to make them exempt lesson learned here if you don’t have money you will be shit on by the government every time

This is a bs story. I applied for 'classic rod' because my truck fit the definition. I checked with the dmv twice to make sure before applying. The reason I applied is because the smog laws in nevada are stupid copies of code from out of state. If you have obd, they don't actually measure emissions at all. Rather they just hook your vehicle computer to the smog shop computer networked to the state computer where they basically gather the current status of your vehicle from your vehicle computer. I won't go into the details but that's no measure of emissions. I applied because 1) I drive less than 5k a year because I'm retired and don't use that truck very often, 2) it's impossible to fix a cel error on my truck and retest without going thru a drive test which is very difficult to do if you don't drive certain conditions every day. I'm not going into the details but just getting thru the drive test can take weeks or months before the readiness monitors clear to the point where I successfully pass a test. In 2016 I made the mistake of taking it in even though I knew it wouldn't pass. Then I had to go to a smog repair station where they diag the problem as faulty fuel regulator. This small device sits on top of the engine. Part in hand, 10 min repair at most with a screw driver. $150 max but when I picked it up it was $450 charge which just so happens to coincide with the max out of pocket for repair in one year. How? Without telling me, or my authorization, they put the truck on a dynanometer for 2-3 hrs. I'm all in favor of controlling emissions but the system is set up to rob the public. Plus, every year it's a tremendous hassled to renew. You can only renew by mail but no instructions on their website. You can only renew within 35 days of your expiration but for the past two years, and it says this on their website, renewal by mail can take 4-6 weeks. You can renew in person but check this yourself, appts can take two months or more and there is no option on their appt scheduler for registration renewals, so you have to choose a different task, like new registration, schedule the appt two months in advance and then hope when you show up they will process your renewal. Last year I paid them at the beg of sept, and I didn't get the new tags until mid nov and that was after I complained to my assemblyman who put me in touch with someone at the dmv in carson city. The legislature may have passed this code only for a certain industry but it's by far not a loophole but a defense against an idiotic and dysfunctional govt. As a lifelong nevadan, we used to be better off before 2 million people moved here.

This is how old cars are going to die? No more Classics? Just EVs? Even if you have a classic, you still won't be able to drive it? Everyone drive an EV? Sell what you have and trade it for an EV? U.S. Government mandates that ALL new cars will be EVs after 2032. Enjoy your Muscle cars, or whatever else. You have ten and a half years left to enjoy them. Even Dodge will go electric. They are going to start with an electric Charger to be seen in Fast 9.

Does this change year after year? I have a 77 and thought I wouldn't need to smog it anymore but received notice of registration and smog but I don't trust the dmv. Does a 77 need smog check in 2019?

They should do the 30 year at least in California shits a rip off my bronco failed every two years for the last 6 it’s a 1989 I’m just going to buy a pre 1975 f250 and pre 1997 diesel ridiculous how strict the smog is here
