@@justusbryant7366I feel that one tilts more for hunting only. The revolvers that handle that cartridge are bigger framed and not as easy to "everyday carry". One thing for sure if you did use it for a "personal defense" round, there is no way anyone will argue it's ability to stop the threat. To quote another youtuber "she be kickin!" Kentuckyballistics.

For self-defense against most 2-legged predators, .357 magnum 125gr SJHPs are "Plenty." BUT ... I mean ... .44 magnum is "Plenty MORE!" :) Love my 3" 629. As always, GREAT info here. I was very surprised that 125 gr .357 in plain gel penetrated so deeply. I guess that's an example of how less dense Clear Ballistics Gel is opposed to organic gel? Or, I dunno, sun spots? LOL. In any case, I like your take on "over penetration." Getting to the vitals is important.

This particular .357 Mag is a good all-around bullet. I've seen it do well in shorter barrels as well as in longer carbine(with spectacular results) barrels. With the better penetration over some of the lighter(110gr or 125gr) it may serve decently as a trail carry round in areas where the wildlife is black bear size or smaller.

Excellent video of two of my favorite cartridges! In reference to your support hand thumb get stung, back in the OLD days we used to wrap the support hand thumb ACROSS our strong hand around the strong thumb knuckle and it has two benefits I experienced. One it makes a STRONG grip, and it also allows easily and quickly cocking the hammer for a single action shot with the support thumb with loosening the grip. No intent here except to offer an idea you might try and judge for yourself. Thanks for the video!

I'm guessing you mean Jack Weaver grip. I used to do that and will still do it from time to time if I absolutely have to. I use the method I do now because I shoot revolvers and semi autos 50/50 and it's the only grip that works nearly as good with both platforms without modifying much.

Beware the man who has only one gun- he probably knows how to use it. The 357 revolver is the most versatile handgun you can own, due to the wide variety of ammo at 4 distinct power levels. I started with a 4"686 in 1993 (dating myself, lol). It is the last gun i would part with. It ride some miles with me in the first year and a half of my LE career, until i bought a P229 (probably the next to last gun i would get rid of).

to this day, the SJHP is the only bullet design that NEVER FAILS under any conditions and through any barrier. Even reverse hollow points that never fail past barriers, are so velocity dependent that once it passes a barrier, its just a FMJ. The SJHP isnt new and sexy, but show me any other design that will nearly double diameter under any conditions and any barrier. Rem HTP is still the king for revolver ammo! But their HTP semi ammo laggs to new sexy designs...

In my 4-inch 44 mag for everyday shooting I load 250 gr SWC cast bullets at 900 fps cast 1:20 tin to lead. I've never carried the 44 mag because of the weight but it is the most accurate handgun I've ever owned, and that's saying a lot.

I have replaced all mim parts in both guns. Tuned actions and triggers. That 629 is the most accurate due to barrel length. I have some Buffalo Bore anti-personal 180gr SJH. Quite a round! Excellent comparison. I think I might look for a box or two of the Remington 158s for my Combat Magnims - the 158s overall were not reported to be as destructive to K-frame forcing cones and I like the way it expanded. Wouldn’t shy away from carrying that round on trails to avoid becoming part of the food chain. The 44 Mag channel was pretty impressive in terms of permanent cavity as I’ve seen in a while. Sort of reminiscent of the old Phil Engledrum “Handgun Tests” and “Pistolero” still photos of early gel testing by someone other than the FBI.

Nice shooting. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those rounds. What's your estimated water jug to ballistic gel ratio? I'm getting 3-4 jugs with .38+p handloads with decent expansion (.600"ish)
@GunSam
@GunSam 9 ай бұрын
The thing with water, is it only correlates when a bullet expands, and water being a perfect medium has a higher rate of successful expansion. But with full expansion, I would estimate through plain gallon jugs that .60" expansion would be about the 4th water jug. I recall doing tests in the past with plain water jugs and number 4 was the common one bullets like that stopped in. If I had to guess, 4 full water jugs with no dent out the back of 4, is roughly 15" of this clear gel penetration.

The old school SJHP bullets have always seemed to do well. I would venture to guess that these loads are or were the most widely used by handgun hunters in their respective cartridges. May have been supplanted by Hornady XTP by now, but they are still excellent. Probably still my go to for a woods/trail load in a 357. My only 44 mag handgun is a 7.5" SBH, so it is basically a range toy. Been wanting a more carryable DA 44, and u have interested me in the S&W M69. And since i have a couple of L frame holsters already, it makes sense. But if i could find a good price on a 3" 629 (or 657😁).......

Both good man or critter stoppers. One advantage of the big bore is that effectiveness holds up at lower velocities better as it smacks with a wider hammer and is less dependent on expansion. In the end either would be quite capable for social work. Still Winchester and S&W kind of made 44 America's caliber. 😇

While .357 mag was my 1st love, & both .44 mag & .357 mag were some of the 1st guns I ever shot (the 1st was a 1911 .45 in the USN), I don't really have a practical place for either. I live in central FL, where 9-10 months out of the year i'm wearing shorts, a T, & flip flops. The most likely critter I would encounter are coyotes, so .38 spl or 9mm are good for that. I'm not a big guy (5'9", 170 lbs), so it would be borderline ridiculous for me to try to cc either of those guns. 12ga. is my go to for home defense, so all that's left is my sentimentality for those 2 calibers. Note: I DO, technically, have a .357 in the form of an M&P 340, but I'd have to really dislike myself to shoot .357 mag from it.

@GunSam
@GunSam 9 ай бұрын
Federal law prohibits ammo returns lol. There's nothing wrong with either load. The 125 gr low recoil load very much reminded me of my handloads where a non-magnum powder is used, rather it's a fast burning powder. The felt recoil is less in a snub, but I found that load to shine in my 4" barrel as it has the recoil of a 9mm sort of, but still about 500 ft lbs energy if I recall. It is a good balanced load. The Buffalo Bore 158 gr is in the 700 ft lbs energy range, it's like a .44 Mag for energy but less recoil.

I have never had any issues on the locks. I have heard the stories about them, but never personally had an issue. I know there's also a kit for removing the lock and plugging the hole where the key hole was at. I don't remember who sold it, but it's a thing.

Get the 640 Pro Series. It has much better sights even dove tailed front and back so you could change them AND it has not lock.

Honestly with the rheumatoid arthritis I don't see you carrying the short 44 mag most of the time, and if you needed a 44 mag then concealment won't be your biggest concern and you could use a chest rig and pack even a 6 inch gun easily.

Try a bigger 44 mag like a 629 classic with a 5 inch or 6.5 inch barrel. It'll be easier on your hands.

Enjoyed but disagree on SJHP vs JSP. I've noticed SJHP routinely expand very well when fast enough. JSP just flatten a little unless really pushed fast from a rifle. Please test Federal 357G (180 gr SJHP) Has always expanded for me even from a snubbie. (@925 fps) It pushes your hand but has less blast and flame than 158's and way less than 125's. I wish they sold this bullet so I could load my own!
@GunSam
@GunSam 9 ай бұрын
I never said it was exactly the same, I was just making a point. I have seen SJSP pulled from big animals before and they looked basically like these expanded hollow points with a little less size, but it takes more bone mass to do it to the soft points.

I refuse to get a .41 Magnum revolver. There's just not enough ammo choices to be worth it for ammo testing. Edit, and to clarify I don't mean ammo quantity but I mean variety. Like .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum come in a lot of various hollow point loads. The .41 Magnum has just a handful of variety and the rest is all target ammo of various brands.

If Elmer Keith would have had a stronger SAA frame to work with when he was working up 45 Colt loads, probably .44magnum would have never come into existence, and .44 Special may have mostly gone away. Even when 44magnum was in existence later, Elmer was trying to make a case for 41 magnum. It's a great cartridge. Industry just doesn't think so.

I was trying to get a 41 magnum Blackhawk. I am fine with the ammo as there are some really good loads and I have time for hand loading. Alas they are unobtainium so I have a Super Blackhawk on the way. I am sure I will enjoy it.

1180 fps for a 240 gr 44mag??? Ok, but let's just be honest here. That is a low to medium power loading. Standard full power 44 mag is 1400 fps with a 240 gr bullet. The Hornady 240gr Mag offering will get you closer at 1325 ftps.
@GunSam
@GunSam 9 ай бұрын
The Hornady 240 gr gave me 1,222 FPS in this revolver. Either way, I find this power level to be perfect for a revolver like this model 69 as a defensive load. It's not like I need it for bear defense, in which case I wouldn't use a SJHP anyways.

Why shoot at 75 yards? A charging polar bear attack. One in each shoulder and then one in the head. This leaves you (3) for the second one. In probable you say ? Canadian geese are on this side of the northern border year round. Not a leap for polar bears to do the same.

When I started using the area I shoot at, the maximum range I could measure to a target on flat footing was 75 yards, that's why. Like I often say, when I do 75 yards it's just for fun because I like a challenge.
