So many things wrong with that 2002 team. They made the Mo Vaughn trade after he missed a year due to injury and saw him take a few swings in a batting cage in Connecticut. Alomar went from being a Hall of Famer to a .266 hitter who lost all defensive range overnight. Burnitz struck out every third at bat and Cedeno showed up after signing as a free agent very much out of shape and couldn't steal bases anymore. Don't forget, they were actually at .500 until August, when they went an entire month without winning a game at home. That 12 game losing streak in August and the 6 game losing streak in September sealed Bobby V's fate. Whether he "lost" the team or they quit on him (it looked a lot like the latter), this group of players was the wrong fit for any manager, much less one with an inflammatory personality. The off the field stuff like Mark Corey and Tony Tarasco smoking pot, Grant Roberts being blackmailed over a picture of him with a bong in college, the ridiculous press conference where Bobby V imitated a stoned ballplayer trying to hit a fastball while Steve Phillips glared at him, it was all too embarrassing for the Wilpons and they fired Bobby V because he was the most convenient target. That 2002 team was officially torn down in the first half of 2003, when Vaughn's career ended due to injury, Burnitz and Alomar were traded, new free agent Tom Glavine had an ERA around 5... fun times in Flushing.

Tom Glavine even admitted that he never wanted to sign with the Mets. I liked Bobby Valentine. He and Steve Phillips never got along after he fired half his coaching staff; Tom Robeson and Bob Apadaca on June of '99. It was easy for the Wilpons to fire Valentine because Doubleday was the one that gave the contract extension to Valentine. The Wilpons never had the intention of trading for or resigning Mike Piazza and the Wilpons never wanted to resign Valentine after the 2000 World Series either. Doubleday made that all happen. Fred hated that. That's why there was a lot of riff between both owners of the team.

Loved Bobby V as manager. Been a Mets fan for 21 years and he’s the best Mets manager in my lifetime. But firing him after the 2002 season was the right call. They were awful in August and Sept. Steve Phillips was not a good GM. He should’ve been fired too.
@hmhm8564 жыл бұрын
I disagree with Phillips. I think he was a good GM with the Mets. He got talent, he made the Mets a winning team again after the 80's Mets. But 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 were really lost years for the Mets, specially in 2001 and 2005 since the NL East was such a weak division.

After all this, the man who turned on the lights for Fred, Art Howe, was a terrible choice. LoL prominent manager ... I'm sorry Mike a prominent manager cost too much here's Art Howe!... They didn't fire Bobby V because the team sucked, they fired him because he wanted more money and power in the organization ... And the Wilpon's based there decisions on what would save them money, hence why they ran the Mets like a small market team in NYC ... That's why nobody shed a tear when they finally sold the team the penny pinching was too much.
