I miss those 2002-2005 days with the Sox Yanks rivalry at its best in YEARS classic Mike and the MAD Dog
@hmhm8562 жыл бұрын
The rivalry was gone after 2004. 1978, 1998-2004 were the best years, with 2003 being the peak year
@TheLocalLt Жыл бұрын
Really the peak of the rivalry was from 2003-2007, when it was front and center above almost everything else in sports, plus the teams’ front offices and clubhouses also hated each other during that time. For example, Cashman bought out an entire hotel to prevent the Red Sox from beating them to Jose Contreras, Theo Epstein one-upped him the next year by going to Thanksgiving dinner with Curt Schilling’s family.

What many people tend to forget is that the two seasons that Torre and Cashman were criticized the most were also the two seasons that the two of them did their best and an outstanding job as manager-general manager combo (2005 and 2007). The Yankees looked like they were gonna miss the postseason both seasons, but they were able to turn it around, with signings, making changes in the lineup, all that.

as a Yankee hater I loved when these guys would get the missives & read them. Love Dogs immediate excitement when Mike said what we have is a missive. :)

I think when Mike kept saying "the kid" he was talking about Ervin santana who was a rookie. He came into the game in the 2nd inning when bartolo got hurt.

Say what you want about these two, but this was the most entertaining sports radio talk show, by far, and no one has come close since.

2004 was NOT Torre's fault. The Yankees had a one-run lead in the ninth inning of Game 4, with the best closer in the history of the game; Then the Yankees had a two-run lead in the eighth inning of Game 5, and opportunities to blow it open to AT LEAST a five-run lead prior to that, but Trot Nixon robbed Matsui (I think) in the sixth. A lot of people forget that play. THEN, A-Rod struck out in the top of the eighth. And then the Tony Clark ground-rule double in the 9th was a bit of bad luck. If it bounces off the wall six inches (or less) lower, the Yankees win Game 5 in regulation. OH and then the Yankees had two on and two out in the bottom of the 9th of Game 6 with an ex-Red Sox player, Clark, at bat, with a full count. ALL of those situations went the Red Sox way, and none of those can be blamed on Torre. Did Torre have a good series that year? No, Francona out-managed him by a lot. But Torre is too easy to blame. Didn't Sheffield go 1-for-17 in the last four games? A-Rod blew opportunity after opportunity the last four games. Too easy to blame Torre. I'm a Boston fan, so I've seen a team of mine be on that side of blowing a three game lead, with the Bruins in 2010 versus the Flyers. Their situation was eerily similar, they had a power play in overtime of Game 4, managed to lose. Then get blown out in Game 5 with the Flyers starting goalie getting hurt. Then the backup almost shut them out in Game 6. Then Game 7 happened, and was a microcosm of the series. 3-0 lead, lost 4-3 ... in the game and the series. And a lot of people wanted Claude Julien fired after that. But he wasn't. The Bruins retooled, got tougher, came back the next year and won the Stanley Cup, wiping out two 2-games-to-none deficits, winning three Game 7's, and smacking the Flyers down in a complete blowout. Had Julien been fired, maybe the Bruins don't win the Cup in 2011. Point is, it's too easy to just blame the coach/manager.
