Looks very much like my Mitchell 440a internally. Took mine apart as I had a similar issue with the "finger dab" bail not operating smoothly. I think the plastic profile behind the circular plate is to recover the bail back to the closed position when you rotate the reel. It moves the lever which in turn drives a gear wheel on the bail. I think the bail opens using the action of the external spring which was the issue with mine, the spring needed attention.

Yes, the worn out ,, Half Moon" shaped Platik is the most common reason for Reeltroubel . And always take care of the Storage problem : Store the ,, Autobail " MITCHELL`s always with Bail in open position! That gives the Bailspring a much longer relaxed life!!!

Me precio con humildad de pescador, de tener este reel, es un placer usarlo , además me complace el solo mirarlo diario en mi vidriera de pesca, junto a sus colegas el 308, el 408, el 304, el DAM 110, y otros.. son mis compañeros en mi individualidad.
