I picked up a 330 in great condition at a garage sale for $10 a couple of years ago. The spool had Trilene 8 pound test line dated "June 1967". I am tempted to use it. Vintage Mitchell reels are over engineered (a good thing), indestructible, easy to work on and reliable. As long as you can source bail springs they will last forever.

Mitchell started putting Garcia on there reels around 58-78. García was the distributor of these reels to North America from France.

I still have my pre 330 in use. The first 330`s didn`t have the 330 lettering , only ,, OTOMATIC" engraved, no Bail lock Button and the Bail in more 300 like shape.

Just pick one up a 330 ($25) at an estate sale. It was 75% off day. I ask them to toss in the extra unused spool ($10). So, I paid $6.25. It appears to working just fine. All it needed is new line. I'll do some basic cleaning. I plan on pair it up with my fiberglass spinning rod that I made from the 70s.

I have 36 Mitchell saltwater reels. I only use vintage tackle. I personally. Would not have a Pure Fishing Mitchell from China. To me they are so inferior to the vintage French Mitchells. I have 163 mostly surf spinning reels made before 1980. I built an all chrome Mitchell 498 from parts. It took me three months to complete mainly because the parts were all so difficult to find. My favorite is a 396 PUM reels with a 498 line arm and pickup and a 498 high speed handle. It is a fantastic reel that I love! I just completed a complete set of all the Daiwa Silver Series reels with many duplicates. I enjoyed your video and subscribes. I have a passion for vintage spinning ree;s!

Thanks for the subscribe! I have another Mitchell reel review coming soon! My first reel was a 330 and it still works and it never let me down!

@@thefishingpole5602 I’d love to see your take on one of the large Mitchell Saltwater reels. All the reels from the 302N and larger are very similar. The 396 PUM and 498 PUM are the best ones!

@@thefishingpole5602 They are great reels but the main gears don't hold up like a 302. I have two 402s - 1 i converted to PUM and the other i kept bailed. I have pairs of many of the Mitchell's in PUM and bailed like that including 306, 406, 302, 402, 396-496, and 488-498. The 386 and 486 have no PUM conversion kits available that i know of.

The Mitchell reels made in France are the best reels , I also fish with vintage reels like the Abu 10000 cl reel and a very old sea cape over head trolling reel , I have a question for you what is the smallest Mitchell reel they make , kind regards tony

Back in the 70's I used to have one of these, It was sold then as the Mitchell Match and was my main match fishing reel , it was faultless and gave me several years of good solid use! Wish I still had it, I also had a little Mitchell 410 that was my back-up reel.

Great to meet another Mitchell fan. When I originally made this video I never thought it would generate so much love for them. Do you still use it to fish or you more of a collector?

I have always been a Mitchell fan, having fished with a blue 410A model many years ago, and recently I found myself collecting the earlier Mitchell half bail 300's (officially known as 'The Mitchell'). My Mitchell 300 collecting bug started the day I dug out my fathers old half bail model and that was that, but now these 330 models have also grown on me, so I'm hoping to have a couple of the earlier otomatic labeled reels here with me very soon (cant wait to strip them down and service them all).

I opened up a can of worms literally when I took a second look at my old 330. My dad gave me leftover Mitchell’s from my Uncle and Grandfather. I would love to collect more simply to collect and to fish also. I’d love to do more reviews and and one planned. Ironically most Mitchells can be had for the cost of a new one. Thanks for the response!

The 330 MITCHELL was my first MITCHELL Reel . I got the 330 in 1972. In 2000 i started to collecting MITCHELL & CAP Reels. I have 2 ! first Modell pre 300`s from 1939 in working condition ; one from a former Australian soldier who was fighting in the ETO in 1944/45 and one from a small village french fleemarked! I have 2 MITCHELL Reels from every Year of manufactoring until the last real ,, MADE IN FRANCE" Version. Some 300 Mitchell Pro 45 Anneversary . One first OTOMATIC without travel look button on the rotatorhouse and the bailwire in 300 shape, only OTOMATIC letters without 330 lettering . One first early 350 only with the lettering RAPIDE on housing. I am still looking for a very first CAP Version pre 1939. If somebody are surching for more infos : Take a look at the MITCHELL FISHINGREEL MUSEUM or Wallace Carney`s book ,, MITCHELL FISHING REEELS" the collectors bibel!

I bought a 330 Otomatic a few years ago at Goodwill for $4.99. I'm just now getting around to putting it on a rod. I wondered if it was supposed to click the whole time you reeled it. Looking forward to putting it back in action.

The bail will be forced a little when you initially turn the handle. It is a noisy reel but it’s part of normal fiction. I was trout fishing one year and a guy near me heard the noise the reel made and said to his buddy,” look! It’s an old Mitchell 330!”

I must confess, I've never thought of these as a salt water or spinning reel. They share so much in common with the 440 and 440a, and they are sold in Uk and Europe as match reels, for generally small freshwater fish. Which is not to say they could be used for estuary fishing, but cope with a 30lb cod? Having said that i've had carp to 16lb on my 330.

I started back when I was 18, now 71 with a 300 and it still works today. I also have 2, 308 and a 410. My question since I've switched from fresh water to salt, how do you feel they would hold up in salt water conditions. I do rinse off my reels in fresh water at the end of a trip.
@thefishingpole5602 Жыл бұрын
I don’t see why you couldn’t use them in salt water as long as you upkeep in the maintenance especially rinsing them off well. For myself I would be reluctant to do it knowing how much I love my reels ,but if it’s the only reel you had it will definitely work well
