CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: It’s a creepy time down South when Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotton, Mary Astor, Victor Buono and Oscar nominated Agnes Moorehead team up In “Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte”, Robert Aldrich’s fabulous follow-up to “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?’. With this entry, the legendary feud between Davis and Joan Crawford continued. Joan Crawford was originally cast, but was replaced by de Havilland early in the proceedings, the back story of which is almost as good as the film. The movie is a murderous, macabre and magnificent entertainment from an impeccable line up of pros. Don’t miss it!

Agnes Moorehead is my favorite character actress of all time. She was different in every role she played and amazing every time. She stole every scene she was in as Velma the dedicated housekeeper and that's saying a lot when you're working with all that talent. Agnes was nominated for the fourth time for Best Supporting Actress and I think she should have won but at least she was recognized. She was just too good to ignore.

Word! What adds to the poignance is Mary Astor’s career was ruined by a sex scandal at the height of her fame and never really recovered. She’s talking about it as much as her downfall in the film. It’s heartbreaking

I saw both this film and "Jane" when I was about 7 or 8 and was horrified (lol) Saw "Jane" again as an adult and happened to catch "Charlotte" just last year on the teevee. Such a great camp classic. Bette gives her usual stellar performance, Olivia de Havilland was all poise and elegance to Bette's 'diamond in the rough' and Agnes Moorhead, who I had only known from "Bewitched", was absolutely mesmerizing. (and was delighted to find out afterwards that Olivia de Havilland was a dear friend who greatly admired and adored the divine MIss Davis) :) (and another fantastic review from the indomitable Monsieur Hayes!!) 🤗

If I'd never seen this film before Steve, your marvelously fun and informative review would make me immediately rush to find/buy/steal a copy to watch it. As it happens I do know it, having come across "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" some years ago on a rainy Saturday afternoon while channel-surfing --and it remains for me the perfect Saturday afternoon movie. I loved Mary Astor's character Miss Mayhew, and loved also Cecil Kellaway's compassion and kindness for Bette's Charlotte. Thanks for the review !

Great review, Steve. You're right about Mary Astor, she was the best. When you mentioned the supporting cast at the end, I thought for sure you would mention John Megna, the scene-stealing, little Dill Harris in "To Kill a Mockingbird", as this was his follow up movie. He appears at the beginning of the movie. John was Connie Stevens' brother.

A big "thank you" for another wonderful movie review! You're incandescently happy when you tell us these behind the scenes stories and how the actors worked with or against each other. It's like you're sharing a Valentine of something you truly love, when the actors reach in and reveal complex feelings. Olivia DeHaviland was probably a better choice for Miriam. She's refined and beautiful (scandalously attractive in that evening gown) and so makes for a more effective villain.

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I fear that JC was then looking sort of Easter Island in the face; a handsome woman, to be sure. But too formidable to be a silky villain. DeHaviland as the cousin was more of an insinuating presence. Anyway, I love your way with words, your enthusiasm, and your amazing BD imitations! You're a gem, sir!

Well it's just a matter of preference I guess. De Havilland leaves me cold, personally. She might be good technically but for me there's always something missing. That being said, I've just watched Lady In A Cage (another role meant for Joan) and she was terrific in that.

I know. The atmsophere and cinematography are gorgeous. You can actually feel the heat and dampness. Aside from all the in house shenanigans, it's an incredible production and Aldrich at his best. I love Bette and Joan's work, but their respective egos always got the better of them. The trouble they both caused on this film and the huge cost of the delays, marked the end of a major studio giving either of them a first class production again. They always got in their own way. Thanks for watching and have a lovely, SAFE weekend. Steve

Bruce Dern told this story about Bette Davis and Joan Crawford one was in her dressing room and she yelled out tell that C-Word I'm not coming out till she stops picking on me. The other responded by yelling tell her when she's ready to come out and work we'll be ready instead of waiting for her to quit putting salve on the sores on her back that she got from laying on it for 25 years so she could have a god damn career. God they hated each other lol..

I love this one too. All those wonderful classic actresses together and to see Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor , who quietly gives them all a run for their money. Simply fabulous. However... I would have given ANYTHING to have seen the lost foortage that Joan shot. She actually filmed all her scenes without Bette. Wouldn't that have been fascinating.? Thanks for watching! Steve

@@emjayay BETTE DAVIS: " I always thought that acting should be larger than life. That's why people went to the movies. To take themselves out of the every day occurances. Now everything is SO real." That was taken...not verbatum, mind you..from an interview she did with Playboy Magazine in the '70's. If you can find it, it's still one of the best interviews she ever gave. I think what it all comes down to, is that it's simply the nature of the art form. Ever changing, ever evolving and with technology where it is and where it's headed, who knows when they'll get to a point where they animate everything and there will be no more live actors? ...I hope not in my lifetime. . Have a great day and please stay safe. Best; Steve

She had a heart. She was also incredible savvy and used to the Hollywood game by then. She did win a Golden Globe, so she didn't come out empty handed. She should have had the Oscar for "Magnificent Ambersons" and for "Mrs Parkington" as well...so it goes.
