Thank you for your tribute to this lovely film. I think this is Irene Dunne’s most inspired performance, and never so much as in the final moments of the film. Katrin has just found out the a story of hers has been accepted for publication. The whole family is anxious to hear the story and all sit around the kitchen table. Mama having told Katrin earlier of her meeting with Mrs. Moorhead and the woman’s advice that Katrin should write about things she knows, thinks the story is going to be about Papa. But as Katrin begins to read her story out loud, she realizes the focus is on her: Mama. Very quickly any number of diverse emotions play out on Dunne’s face: surprise, annoyance, and then a quiet resigned feeling of pride. This is cinematic acting at its most subtle and most satisfying. As Katrin continues to read her story, Mama moves to look outside the kitchen window. The camera lingers on her face for a few final moments and then the camera pulls out slowly to reveal a foggy San Francisco night of 1910. Eventuality all is enveloped by fog and the mourning wail of a fog horn. The past is gone and gone for good,. I REMEMBER MAMA has some problems as a film, but I truly believe that last 10 minutes of the George Stevens’ film is among the best endings of any American film ever made.

Such a perfect film for Christmas, even if it doesn't have Christmas featured in it. But movies like this can be difficult to watch, especially if you have lost parents and the characters bring back those memories. Meet Me St Louis is one like that for me, especially since Judy Garland's character's name is Esther Smith (my Mom name), and her singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas just rips my heart out, even decades after my Mom's death. I Remember Mama is like that. A family who only have each other to rely on, and a Mama who is self-sacrificing and putting her children and family's needs above her own. We can see our own mothers in Irene Dunne in this film, their strong but gentle presence, their smiles and laughter, their joys and pains. She deserved her Oscar nomination for this. I had heard a rumor that they had tried to get Greta Garbo to come out of retirement to play the Mama in this. I love Garbo and I think she would have done great in the part, but Irene Dunne owned this role.

OMG, I had forgotten about this gem. I totally agree with you on everything you said. It never once forgets the family ties and love that bond them together. Thank you so much.

Even though this is a film in which ALMOST NOTHING HAPPENS...I still can't stop watching; it's SO damn' good and pulls you in and never lets go...the sign of a great director, George Stevens, whose 1934 "Alice Adams" has almost the exact same qualities .Stevens' direction and camera work is so brilliant in "Mama" that even their HOUSE becomes a character, with its cozy but intricate layout and its magical feel, as the camera moves in and out of the rooms (check the spot where Irene Dunne reads about the famous poet (and gourmet) coming to town; what could have been a straightforward scene becomes a delightful romp through the house, with Papa reading the article in the paper, while Nils, their son, makes his first attempt at smoking a pipe, while the stubborn window that Papa is working on seems to have a mind of its own..ALL of this timed and choreographed into a masterful, dazzling display of film technique while ENHANCING and never overpowering the story). Philip Dorn as Papa is magnificent, cool, dignified..a solid font of wisdom and support for the family (the scene with Barbara Bel Geddes' "rite of passage"...her first cup of coffee... is heartbreaking in its truth and simple beauty (complimented by Roy Webb's quote of a Norwegian folk song in his scoring). Great stuff! PS--did you mention that the hopelessly nerdy, dorky Mr. Thorkelson is played by Edgar Bergen (phenomenally popular with his dummy sidekick Charley McCarthy)? And the family doctor is played by Rudy Vallee, who was THE MOST POPULAR singing star of the late 20's and early 30's (until Crosby came along); Rudy gives a wonderful, understated performance; again the sign of a master director. Also, the little nephew with the bad leg is played by Tommy Ivo, who became one of America's most iconic race car drivers in the 70's. Thanks for highlighting one of THE greatest...but unjustly neglected....films of the American cinema. Merry Christmas!

I know, that scene always gets me. I am from California and the way the director captured a warm, quiet California country afternoon as the sun went down, symbolic of Uncle Kris's ending and the sound of the Blue Jays. And how kind and noble Uncle Kris's "Woman" was. And the final acceptance of her by the sisters.😢 I truly love this film.

The cat part brought back a memory when I was about 10 our dog Yogi, he was a big Britanny Spaniel had a tooth ache and my brother who was in his 20's made a pitcher of Vodka and Orange Juice and put some in his bowl. Dog was happy the rest of the night so was my grandmother who went to town on the juice not knowing it had alcohol in it she was a tea toddler. Next morning she woke up and my brother asked where the juice was, and she said she drank it last night and that was the best orange juice I ever had. 🤣

She sparkled in her small role as the hotel manager in Vertigo, as Neva Tremayne in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, and of course as the grandmother in The Waltons. A true cinematic warrior. I must see this, just for having her in it. RIP Ellen!

This was one of Irene Dunne's favorites of all her films (bringing her her fifth and last Oscar nomination). A professor of mine had the privilege of interviewing Miss Dunne in the late 70s, and I had the privilege of hearing the tape of that interview. In it, she did mention "Mama" as one of her favorites (two others she specifically mentioned with special fondness were "The awful truth" and "Love affair," her third and fourth Oscar nominations, respectively). Thanks so much for reviewing this gem!

One of the greats. My favorite line: “No, this is recipe for goulash the way her mother makes it.” - the whole, if way-too-brief scene with Florence Bates kicks it all up another notch, if possible. Also the long shot of Barbara O’Neil walking alone into the field after Uncle Chris dies. Also the steadily held long shot of the window that won’t stay open with Lars smoking his pipe for the first time. The first cup of coffee. The Dickens reading scenes with Cedric Hardwicke’s Mr. Hyde. Etc. Great choice, Steve.

Dear, dear Steve, sometimes you come along just when I am at my lowest and you review a film I adore, and it's the most perfect present, because it's as though you have chosen something heart warming just for me. This is a film I love, it's a film both my mother and aunt (who together brought me up) loved, and it has enormous heart without ever being sentimental (a really tricky balancing act). Irene Dunne is perfect, I adore Oscar Homolka, and George Stevens is a brilliant director - there aren't enough superlatives. Funnily enough, when I was two years old I had to go into hospital and at that time parents here weren't allowed to visit children AT ALL. It wasn't known whether I would need an operation, and all my mother could do was to peer through the hinge of the ward door to see me. I will never forget a nurse saying, "It's no good crying for your mother because she's gone and she's not coming back!" and crashing the bars of a cot shut around me. God knows where they got those ministering angels from - Dachau? Thankfully I was out again in two days, but as you can imagine, Irene Dunne scrubbing floors in order to visit her daughter was a favourite film sequence of ours. The whole film is one wonderful sequence after another, funny and sad and completely endearing - how I love Irene Dunne saying she's had "two sherries" with Florence Bates. Under an extraordinary system at the moment, my hip and I had to take a taxi to be tortured at a sort of training centre earlier this week, in case my MRI scans were faked, before they would believe them and allow me to be referred to a hospital. I was in such agony afterwards that I was pretty near to doing myself in, but then I remembered my mother and didn't. So between the two of you, you're getting me through this. I wish you the very best Christmas, dear Steve, and please thank Johnny too (I always forget to thank him) and know how grateful I am to you for bringing such delight into my life. Love from Alida

I enjoyed your recommendation of this film and offering the background of many of the character actors. At times, there are films or songs to get one into a holiday setting, and for me it can be "Holiday Affair" (1949) for the quirky pairing and character actors galore. The toy train that becomes an actual train at the end. I am sure you have many offering what to cover next. Consider 1962's "Satan in High Heels", I was so glad to stumble over it as if eating a slice of cheesecake that one might not, should not and does anyway. A happy season to you!

The movie, the play, and the novel are wonderful! A novel!? Yes! Kathryn Forbes' grandmother was from Norway, and Mama was based on the grandmother.

The hospital nurse at 4:46... have we seen that actress on other things? She reminds me of a younger Aunt Bea from Andy Griffith.

She was in countless films, usually as a harridan, so this was a refreshing change of pace. I can't think of her name, but she's alot like Florence Bates, who shows up as the authoress later in the film. Two Happy Harridans! LOL!

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ oh goodness, it's you! I appreciate the info.. now I'll keep an eye out for her. I would have liked to see her try playing Lady Bracknell. Thank you very sincerely for all your work making TOQATM. Your videos have comforted, uplifted and delighted me for a long time and I'm grateful.

Love this movie. Great review. I'm not generally an Irene Dunne fan, to be honest. But, I love her in this movie. I dislike her and her character the most in "Life with Father.'" As for George Stevens, the best!

She's radiant in this. So real.

So, when do we get to see the full movie, " I Temember Mama".

There’s a reference to Irene Dunn’s coif in the original “Auntie Mame.” When Mame’s desperately trying to prepare herself for a meeting with her nephew’s stuffy banker trustee, speaking to her “bosom buddy, “Vera Charles,” she grabs a hairpiece and begins braiding it to look virtuous “like Irene Dunn.”

I'll have to think about adding this to my cue of Xmas movies. I'm already planning on watching "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and "We're No Angels". It's worth mentioning that Dunne played Magnolia on stage and it was one of the reasons the James Whale wanted her in the 1936 movie version of "Showboat". I just wish she'd done more movies with Cary Grant they had wonderful screen chemistry.

They did indeed. He adored her and once told her she was the sweetest smelling leading lady he ever worked with.
