Charles Laughton, Mary Boland, Charlie Ruggles, Roland Young and Zasu Pitts are in comic heaven in Leo McCarey’s delightful satire RUGGLES OF RED GAP (1935) written by Harry Leon Wilson. Laughton plays a proper British butler who his employer loses in a poker game to Roland Young. Laughton is forced to go the American west at the turn of the century with his unsophisticated new employers Ruggles and Boland. There, he discovers what rustic America is all about and brings sophistication and class to the community in return. It’s by far Laughton’s greatest comedy and Boland, Young, Ruggles and Pitts are perfection! Happy Thanksgiving!

These type of movies need a sensitive director. It's starts there. He must get the shades of emotion on film and later on in editing process . But it starts with physical direction and camera angles in each scene.

So glad to see this movie mentioned again! Wonderful and nuanced. Beautiful performances by every actor. My personal favorite is Charlie Ruggles, love him in his movies. Maybe you can do If I Had A million? Ruggles and Laughton are in it, too, and it's also great. You can tell it's pre-code, but subtle. The sequence with the prostitute is amazing with the perspective it's shown in and quite hilarious. They aren't kidding they "don't make them like used to!" And don't get me started about Preston Sturges movies that are mostly forgotten.

I'm familiar with the title of this movie but this is the first time I've ever heard anyone talk about it --- and talk about it so well. Steve your impersonations are terrific and you're so knowledgeable. As you told about "Ruggles of Red Gap" I was reminded of a "Will and Grace" episode in which Karen Walker and Beverly Leslie were trying to get "ownership" of Rosario the maid. Off topic, but am I correct, Steve, that on the bookshelf next to Johnny and behind you to your right is a copy of the Riverside Shakespeare?

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Happy Holidays to you and yours too! I've been a fan of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford since I was in high school and it's only recently that I've been able to find more of their films. Being on a fixed income can make the film hunting tough sometimes but luckily the town that I live in has a lot of thrift shops and I still collect VHS so for a bargain hunter like myself, I've found some gems in those shops. I even keep a notebook of the films that I want to add to my collection in my travel bag, so when I'm out and about, I have a list of the films that I'm trying to find. Plus another upside is the streaming services that I have as well as having Turner Classic Movies on our cable system here since I was a kid. I watched a lot of movies on there with my grandma. She was the one who introduced me to Hitchcock with "Shadow of a Doubt" which to this day is one of my all time favorites. Now if I had to pick a favorite decade of film, it would probably be the 70s, because a lot of my favorite directors like De Palma and Scorsese, who were heavily influenced by the older films, were starting to make their mark. I have also made lists of films recommended by other directors and have been trying to find some of those "100 Films..." books.

Fantastic review Steve and a very happy thanksgiving to you and Johnny wow this brought back memories have not seen this comedy treasure since the early1970s but even as a kid I new this was great . I also loved Charlie Ruggles as Major Applegate in Bringing Up Baby 1938 . And Mary Boland is Perfect in this film it was remade in 1950 with Bob Hope And Lucile Ball with a slight difference Bob plays an actor impersonating a butler and hired by Lucile Ball it’s quite good but not great like Ruggles Of Red Gap thank you for picking this movie to review and bring it to the attention of everyone as usual you have exquisite taste in Movies in general cheers Carl .

Thank you so much Steve and if you are doing a Christmas Movie next month then that would be an early Christmas Present for us all . Would you believe for the last 25 years every Christmas Eve our family has watched Christmas In Connecticut original version of course love your review it is a magnificent review and for us it really puts us in a Christmas mood . In the last 5 years we have now a added another film so we now have a double feature as we have added Holiday Inn 1942 and feel it is also a most welcome Christmas/ Holiday movie love the music and since we eat and drink Christmas Eve while the movies are playing the extra film ensures we do get a very nice sleep well in to Christmas Day and yes in the immortal words of Alexander Yardley Chicken is my weakness cheers Carl .

Zazu's name has been pronounced all kinds of ways but in her autobiography, she says it should be pronounced Say-Zoo. Her name is derived from sections of her two aunt's names. Ruggles has always been one of my favorite movies. I always thought it should have been made into a Broadway musical. There is a film version with Lucille Ball and Red Skelton, I think. Not very good.
