Richard Pike Bissell (June 27, 1913 - May 4, 1977) was an American author of short stories and novels. His third book, and second novel, 7½ Cents, was adapted into the Broadway musical The Pajama Game. This won him (along with co-author George Abbott) the 1955 Tony Award for Best Musical. He wrote a book about the experience called Say, Darling, which chronicled the ins and outs of a Broadway musical production and featured characters based on those (such as Harold Prince) he worked with; this book was also turned into a musical, also called Say, Darling, in 1958. (from wikipedia)

One of my very favorite musicals! I think John Raitt was easily the equal of the two other singing hunks - Gordon MacRae and Howard Keel. A shame he didn't do the kind of movies they got. Another favorite of mine whose film career could have been much greater was Janis Paige - gorgeous and supremely talented. Shirley tells that story all the time, it's in one of her books too. She said she not only wasn't expecting it, she was scared to death, she didn't know Steam Heat at all. But they ran her through it all morning and afternoon. So nope, not an Eve Harrington. I love Doris Day movies; I always watched them and her tv show when I was a tiny tot. I even bought her autobiography; I got the paperback when it came out. It is super well loved. I love Pajama Game, I have the same DVD you do.

Shirley's is one of those legendary, magical show biz stories that young performers hear early in their careers and for better pr worse, hold onto for years. Doris was such a troopper. She was intimidated and insecure about walking into a show that everyone else in the cast had done for over a hundred performances.But, being the pro she wa, she made it her own. Thanks for watching! Steve

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Shirley was lucky but she was prepared for this break, she had been a gypsy for several years and was taking lessons, she was ready. I could see that, Doris had never acted till she did her first movie and never done any stage work so it must have been scary to be part of a cast that had been together for a whole season. But she was so talented that she did a great job. They did this a few times Tab Hunter in Damn Yankees and Lucille Ball in Too Many Girls. Somehow it works for them.

I love this film and often recommend it to friends. It seems to be little known and deserves a boost like the one you just gave. I'm also a big Doris Day fan. This was the only one of her many musicals that was a Broadway show; all the others were written for her. My favorite number is "There Once Was a Man" where Day and Raitt practically explode with energy, a real rock 'em sock 'em number. "Once a Year Day" is a great dance-in-the-park number like "Shipoopi" in "The Music Man". and "Dancing" in "Hello Dolly". With Stanley Donen and Bob Fosse you just can't lose. I was amazed at how you absolutely nailed Day's unique intonation on 'Secret Love".

Pajama Game is a musical that grew on me with multiple viewings. I'm not a huge Doris fan, but she's great here, and I'm glad she got the part. I watched it multiple times not for Day, but for Fosse's brilliant choreography in Steam Heat with Haney & Co. That scene is mesmerizing, start to finish. Over time, I also fell in love with Raitt (Bonnie's dad!) and, eventually, the whole score. Steam Heat belongs in a Hall of Fame somewhere. It's one of Fosse's greatest achievements.

Re: Once I Had A Secret Love This song came out in 1954 when I was 9 years old. I had a sweet little boy’s voice and I loved to sing it. One clear memory of that time: Recess at elementary school, maybe third grade. While the other kids were playing dodge ball in the gym, I slipped away into the adjoining men’s room which had a large communal shower area. I stood right in the middle over the drain and sang this song because the acoustics made my voice echo beautifully. This one scene foreshadows elements of my gay life to follow. Dear Steve, Thank you so much for a gorgeous review of a film (I can't believe I'm writing this) I've never seen. Doris Day's films made throughout the fifties and sixties are constantly on television, I watch them constantly, yet this one has never turned up! Howard Keel in "Kiss Me Kate" is also always available, so I've seen Bob Fosse dancing with Carol Haney, although I didn't know it until I saw the miniseries "Fosse/Verdun". The numbers are so familiar too - they've entered my consciousness - and as somebody has already said, Shirley MacLaine wrote in her autobiography about being given her big break when she had to go on stage in place of Carol Haney in "The Pyjama Game". Carol Haney in the clips you included sometimes remind me of the very young Leslie Caron. Thank you so much for telling us all about it and I will be thrilled to get the dvd. Best wishes, Alida

This was a lot of fun to watch--and damn, I had no idea that was Harvey Evans (who I got to interview about some of his stage work--great guy!) I remember in high school, around 1999, when this was picked as the musical for our theatre season (I went to a performing arts school) ALL the kids were either disappointed or confused, but it became one of our best received shows and one of the most fun (I didn't have a role but as one of the leading boy dancers I got Steam Heat, solos in Once a Year Day and Hernando's Hideaway, and a main part in the Jealousy Ballet--cut from the movie.. One thing you allude to but don't fully mention about the casting of this and its sister musical Damn Yankees is, like you said, they mostly hired the stage cast (and I think some of this was to do it cheap) but the gimmick was they would add one film star to both. Which is why when Frank Sinatra was attached to Pajama Game, Janis Paige from the stage version was his leading lady, but then when Doris Day was attached instead, they brought in John Raitt from the stage version as her leading man. The movie star among the Broadway cast for Damn Yankees was of course Tab Hunter.

Thank you, Steve for yet another delightful review! It is everything you said and more, and it holds a special place in my heart in that my best friend's mom Mary Stanton -- who was one of Mr. Abbott's favorites and was in several of his Broadway shows -- is all over the place throughout the movie! And lord, did she have stories to tell! As I'm sure Harvey did too!

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Get this- in Josh Logan's autobiography, he said he saw Doris at a party and she didn't want to sing so, in a self-satisfied manner, he thought "You will never be Nellie." He later regretted using all those color filters in the movie, but this is the S.P. decision you should still be ruing in the afterlife, Josh! Would've been a huge career highlight for Doris, and she would've brought so much to the movie.

OK. You are doing one of my all time musical favorites. I don't know how many times I've watched The Pajama Game and I never tire of it. Reddish Shaw & Eddie Foy Jr. do that great bit with the 'I would trust her' song and that dance. She was surprisingly light on her feet in that. Carol Haney doing 'Steam Heat' and I think Fosse was one of the dancers. Just about every number. 'Hey There', and John Raitt was great in this. 'Once a Year Day', 'There was man who loved a woman', 'Small Talk' just loved them all. The actor that played Doris Day's dad with the line 'The tyranny of women' always give me a chuckle. For this film all I can say is 'OLE!'.

Thanks for a very entertaining and informative review, Steve! And I think you might have answered a question I've had for quite some time. For many years I just assumed Reta Shaw's first name was pronounced "Reeta." However, I then heard somebody on an audio commentary pronounce it as you did -- "Rehta." So, I'll take your word for it. Now if you could just help me with the actor Skip Homeier. I heard it pronounced "Ho-my-er" in one audio commentary and "Ho-me-ay" in another. LOL!
@STEVEHAYESTOQ

LOL! First of all, don't go by me. Whenever I encounter multiple pronunciations of a name, I take a chance and when I prononce something wrong, someone will let me know. I LOVE Skip Homeier... big crush... I never heard it pronounced the second way. However , again, don't go by me. Be it ever so humble, there's no one like Homeier...Woof! Steve

I think I manifested this review! I was thinking you were overdue to revisit a Doris Day movie. I'll always remember the Pyjama Game because I signed up to a $1 record club and I ordered the soundtrack to this and Calamity Jane (I was 10!). I got into SOOOOOO much trouble when my Mum found out I'd signed up to the subscription. I got to keep the records though and got a bonus gift of being grounded for a week. I always loved Poopsie! That was a fun story about him being your neighbour!

Harvey was amazing, he was one of the Jets in the original film version of " West Side Story" . I had a crush on him after he appeared on the cover and in a story in " After Dark" Magazine, my go-to gay reference magazine in the '70's. When I saw him on the street in my New York neighborhood, I nearly fainted. When we finally met, he wa so gracious. Steve

I've always been conflicted - having grown up with the original cast album and Janis Paige's glorious, slightly off-key belting, I never could quite accept Doris in the role (and I'm an INSANE Doris fan) - she really *was* the Garland-esque workhorse they just put in everything ... (and of course always wins me over anyway) - great takes and fun as usual, Steve, thx!!

Hello again to the funny funny funny delightful guy known as the Tired Old Queen of the Movies, the inimitable Steve Hayes. I saw the original Broadway production several hundred years ago with John Raitt (Bonnie's father) and Janis Paige. I recently saw the movie and it is indeed a delight. I'm not always a fan of Doris Day (sacrilege) but she was good in this (would've liked to have seen Paige repeat her role - always better when the stars get to do the movie production of the roles they create. John Raitt was a stellar performer and ought to have gone onto much greater fame. His daughter keeps the name alive. There was a great number called "I'll Never Be Jealous Again" with Reta Shaw and Eddie Foy, Jr. On youtube. They do a song and dance number that makes you want to get up and dance and sing with them. Brilliant! Steve, you've got a million or more fans who register adoration for you. Take it heart. Wish you did these tidbits of joy more often. Thanks! Good health to you and Johnny, Best from Daniel

Dear Daniel; Thanks so much. It's always nice hearing from you and your comments & compliments are so appreciated! I'm so fortunate that so many people feel about these films the way I do. Hopefully we can manage to keep them alive for a few more generations. This musical is such a honey. For me, along with their other show, " Damn Yankees" , they're the quinessential example of musical comedies in the 1950's. Great humable songs, energetic dances, sweet love stories and above all, happy endings. Movies & musicals that wrere and still are, simply meant to entertain. And in these torubled times, we need them more than ever. Okay, I'm off the soap box...thank you for listenin/reading and for watching TOQ Best Wishes Always; Steve
