My favorite classic movies in no particular order: The Philadelphia Story (1940), The Divorcee (1930), The Maltese Falcon (1941), Some Like it Hot (1959), The Apartment (1960), Modern Times (1936), Bringing Up Baby (1938), All About Eve (1950) and Casablanca (1942).

I wouldn't know where to start other than my all-time #1, which is definitely Sunrise (1927). The Apartment would probably be my second. Perfect film, perfect writing.

Singin In the Rain, The Philadelphia Story, Gilda, North by Northwest. These are my top four and honestly I love old classic movies and I’m so happy you made this video!!!! I feel like they need to be talked about more!

A classic but lesser-known movie: A Face in the Crowd. Excellent and just as relevant today as it was when in came out in 1957. Some more black & white recommendations: All About Eve, Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, and Sunset Boulevard. Some color and more recent recommendations: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Godfather: Parts I & II, Lost in Translation, Mary Poppins, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Singin' in the Rain, and The Sound of Music. (Half of these color films are musicals!)

Face in the Crowd is a little known classic that I wish everyone would watch but many young seem deathly allergic to viewing older movies, especially if they are black and white features.

My favourite classic movies are Dark Passage (1947), In a lonely place (1950), Sunset boulevard (1950), Rebel without a cause (1955), Psycho (1960), and Taxi Driver (1976).

I'd like to also suggest the classic movie Casablanca (1942). I think it's amazing and it still holds up today. It would be useful to know some facts about World War II and why French and Germans and other nationalities were in Morocco at the time.

Actually, I've never seen your videos before. i just happened across this one after watching one of my favorite black and white movies, "Roman Holiday" with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. It's a beautiful and entertaining story, but something I love about it is that it was Audrey's first movie! Originally the producer wanted to use Elizabeth Taylor but she was not available. Needless to say, they were very happy with Audrey Hepburns performance, then she was on her way to become one of the most famous actress' of her time. Thank you for your suggestions, I'd love to see more :)
@oldhatcinema2 жыл бұрын
Nice job! I commend your first two choices, as obvious introductions for newbies to get into classic film, but was surprised by your third choice, "Rashomon". That's one I still need to see. I've been seriously into classic films for about 4 and a half years now, and personally, I think my top three classic movies everyone should see would be "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), "Casablanca" (1942), and "To Kill a Mockingbird' (1962). I'd love to see you do more reviews on this topic!

For me I don't really watch classic movies except for Hitchcock's .. I think I watched almost every single one and I love them so much: rear window, rope, vertigo, psycho, dial M for murder, north by north west, birds, lifeboat, rebecca.... they're all so good and even though I have no knowledge in cinematography whatsoever, I thought that the imagery and music were so captivating, and the storyline was amazing.. I highly recommend checking them out. Btw I love your content you always give great movie suggestions ❤

This video is more than 2 years old now, and that's a long time in a young person's life. So I wanted to write to you and let you know that I appreciate this video a lot. I am an ESL teacher in France, teaching about 70 people your age how to speak, listen to, and write better English. The fact that you left your mistakes in during the Citizen Kane review shows my students that perfection is not necessary. Well done, and thank you!

Charlie Chaplin is easily one of my favorite filmmakers/actors of all time! I think you could probably do a whole silent films video and maybe one for Kurosawa and his subsequent influence on American cinema (Star Wars, Magnificent Seven). Don't know when your cutoff for "classic" is, but Dr. Strangelove (1964) is one of my favorites!

City Lights just so happens to be my favorite film of all time; ironically enough, it was also apparently the favorite of Orson Welles, none other than the director of what's generally thought to be the best film of all time, which you also mentioned. :) Was that planned, or a lucky coincidence?

The Haunting is a classic "haunted house" thriller. The Wild Strawberries and Seventh Seal are also great Swedish movies. And the look on Takashi Shimura's face in Ikiru when he faces his impending mortality is priceless.
