I love your recommendations, Monika. I watched "Paris Texas" recently, and I was impressed by the acting, writing and direction. It's honestly slept on, and deserves more love.

one of the funniest food movies is Big Night, the last indie film before Harvey Weinstein bought up the small club of indie directors and made it mainstream! I think the movie was made for 1½ mill dollars, but as with most small films that made them big, it had a big heart!actors having fun playing their part, not just side characters saying their lines and step aside for the main character!

@@tenbones545 I absolutely get that. Most of my friends are also crazy about both movies, and some said that I just didn't get it. Film community can be really one-sided and toxic about it, so it's pretty refreshing to find people who think differently and are not ashamed of that :))

Monkey Man was honestly such a good film, and I'm so glad that Jordan Peele stepped in to stop the film from going to streaming hell and instead gave it a cinema release. Amazing to see such insane chaotic action on the big screen, and hear the audience react to the violence with equal measures of excitement and appalment. It's honestly up there with the likes of Dune Part Two, Challengers, and the 25th anniversary re-release of The Phantom Menace as one of my favourite cinema experiences of the year so far. I normally spend most of my time rewatching old favourites of mine, but this year I've been watching loads of films for the first time and have found so many great ones. It's been a mixture of some modern masterpieces (Decision to Leave, Bottoms, Prisoners, Rye Lane) and some older classics (Big Fish, Good Will Hunting, Do the Right Thing, Thelma & Louise). Of all the films I've seen for the first time this year though, I'd say my personal favourites have been the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (RIP Donald Sutherland) and Dead Poets Society (RIP Robin Williams - 10 years later and it still doesn't get easier saying that)

"Dune Part Two" was partly shaped in my mind by the lengthy wait since "Part One". I consider the first part to be more well-executed overall, but the second part does what you want it to do: raising the stakes and expanding the physical scale until the meaning of Paul's decisions (no spoilers today) has the ability to take you in a direction you've never gone before as a viewer. Villeneuve is doing great. European animation from the 70s hits different. I haven't seen "Fantastic Planet" (it's somewhere on my shoplist) but I have seen "Watership Down" and can vouch for how similarly other-worldly it can come across ... despite being about rabbits and English countryside. The soundtrack includes work by Angela Morley and Art Garfunkel. The temptation is to say "Monkey Man" is John Wick India Edition. Which it is, but it also has delightfully strange and spiritual vibes to set it apart from other action flicks of this era.

As a romcom lover I loved Musica, it wasn't perfect but it wasn't cliché (which is, I believe, quite rare for romcoms these days), it was really funny and cute and it was just so much fun to watch. I also watched Monkey Man at the cinema with some friends and I totally agree, it's a must watch. I originally watched it for Dev Patel and wasn't expecting much but I actually loved it and was so surprised how good it was from the directing and the music to the cinematography and the editing. I've watched a lot of films so far this year (I'm already at 230 on letterboxd) but my favourites that I've seen lately are - The Big Sick, - Clue (1985), this film is a must watch for all of those who, like me, love absurd humour - Evil does not exist by Ryusuke Hamaguchi (the director of Drive my Car) and even more recently, The Bikeriders and Kinds of Kindness I also watched some short series, and I especially recommend It's a Sin (I know I'm a bit late but I only watched it a month ago and I found it so good) and Drops of God, this short series might be the best I've seen this year, it's a French/Japanese/Italian/English adaptation of the eponymous manga and it was just amazing, you'll just have to watch it 'cause I don't have the words to describe how much I loved it Anyway, I talk too much, thznk you so luch for the recommendations, most of them are already in my watchlist but now I really want (need) to watch them

I just saw Kinds of Kindness today and hated it! Too long, too confusing with the 3 stories that were linked/similar and characters I just did not care about! Memory was also terrible, even though the acting was brilliant, the characters were not engaging, and while the topic was bleak/depressing, I was so very bored. The Count of Monte Cristo was excellent though. Very long too, but very enjoyable and interesting. Dune Part 2 I thought was OK, with lots of double-crossing and having to have to remember what happened in Part 1, Charlotte Rampling is terrifying in both. I’m not great at recognising actor’s voices, but hers I recognised straight away ( her face is covered in most of the films)

Love your videos, Monika! You bring such a cozy, inspiring vibe 😊 I am myself a screenwriter, and am working on a story that I hope will touch people both philosophically and emotionally. Hopefully only a few months away from completing the script 🙂 Unfortunately though, my dream of seeing this movie happening was largely shattered a few years back... There are reasons I stopped believing that the big studios -- who may have the means of producing this movie -- would want to do justice to the characters and the themes of the story... This is a big dealbreaker for me since characters and themes are the reasons I want to be a storyteller. I've been very uncertain since then if this movie (and possible sequels) will ever happen. However, I did get a suggestion from another KZbin channel that A24 might be a good shot. My project is a fantasy/drama story that might require a big budget. I would like to believe, though, that a non-mainstream studio would want to take a chance on this project so long as they believe it would appeal to a large audience. Optionally, I could also see this story working well as an animated feature, which would hopefully be a cheaper option. Would A24 be interested in that, though... 🤔 If you feel interested in the topic, I'd also like to hear you talk about screenwriting on your channel, and maybe something about the paths we screenwriters could take to see our dreams come to life 🙂 That said, I'll appreciate your contributions all the same 😄

5:05 I haven’t Dune Part 1 or 2! This comment sounds a brag about being “against the grain” w/o context, but I promise it’s not! I’m sure it’s great! I don’t tend to like sci-fi or fantasy no matter how hard I try 😅 I’ve heard people raving that Dune is the best sci-fi book/movie series of all time, but I just haven’t brought myself to try it out yet. @@cinemoni In fantasy I like more Spirited Away and Wizard of Oz, and less LOTR. In sci-fi I like more Alien/Paprika/The Prestige, and less Star Wars. I guess it’s less that I don’t like fantasy and sci-fi, and more that I don’t like sci-fi and fantasy movies where the plot is based around war and the politics of a world I’m unfamiliar with? And any time I read a description of Dune that’s what it sounds like.
