Nick at Nite was always this warm spot on the cable dial with a quirky sense of humor and genuine appreciation for the early years of classic television. But they cast it all aside for reruns of shows that's literally running on five other channels at the same time. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

For starters, there weren't 100 different cable networks (minimum) back then so programming wasn't spread so thin. But look at their schedule: www.nickatnite.com/shows/tvschedule. I looked it up for today and it's Spongebob Squarepants, then 3-1/2 hours of FRIENDS (which airs on at least two other networks I know of), then later overnight you have GEORGE LOPEZ and THE GOLDBERGS (the latter of which airs in syndication elsewhere practically non-stop.) The old Nick at Nite did have some overlap (I Love Lucy, for example) but you weren't finding Dobie Gillis or Donna Reed so readily on other channels. And, also, they presented it with respect and love - airing trivia, creating tongue-in-cheek ad campaigns around them and even sometimes doing something silly like tinting old B&W shows based on a holiday (red for Valentine's Day, for example). Now it's just a dumping ground for the "nothing-else-is-on" crowd. It's not entirely their fault; the larger selection and streaming options changed the landscape. But they've been like that for a while. If you want a taste of the old N@N, check out MeTV. They picked up that ball, Nick dropped years ago.

FACT: Patty Duke was the SAG President from 1980-1988. She was in office at the time Nick at Nite debuted in '85. BTW, I remember that Rerun countdown from '89.

These bring back SUCH fond memories! I grew up watching -- and LOVING -- Nick at Nite when I was a kid, back in the '90s. I have such fond memories of staying up late and watching I Love Lucy, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Mary Tyler Moore, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, The Partridge Family, etc. with my mom (who fondly remembered those shows from when SHE was a kid!). I wish Nick at Nite would return to the TV classics it used to air, instead of airing nothing but repeats of The George Lopez Show... ugh. Classic Nick at Nite was the best!

I sweat that I never, ever forgot these promos none of them! I especially remember Dixie, the NAN pixie and watching the 1987 promo with the girl with the metal detector on the beach with the guy wearing the new schedule and telling the girl to have her mom to watch "Laugh-In" at 10pm. Man, I was nine years old when I saw that commercial!!! I never forgot it along with every other promo on this reel. AMAZING! Nick at Nite was first launched on Saturday June 1,1985. It was MTV Networks' idea after they brought out the struggling closed circuited Cable network in 1984 and turned it full fledged open circuited. Before '85, Nick was only on 18 hours a day. During their early closed circuit years 1979-1984, it was only 12 hours of programming.

Christopher Sobieniak Premium only means it was only accessible to Cable affiliates that picked up Satellite feeds. Much like Cartoon Network until 1997. Nickelodeon did not become an open circuited, basic cable Channel accessible everywhere until October 1,1984. Prior to 1984, Nickelodeon was managed and owned by Warner-Amex. Cartoon Network also until July 1,1997.

Tornado1994 I had CN before '97 as well, and it didn't seem that exclusive to me. My cable company is technically 50 years old at this point in time, and I suppose I thought it was normal having had these channels growing up without thinking of those elsewhere in the country that may not have had them yet, but I have excellent memories of Nick before '84 and enjoyed what it was under Warner-Amex's control.
