This model is what we carried aboard US Navy ships from Vietnam to the mid 90s. Only difference was our version had a much shorter barrel as it was used inside the ship to "Clear Out Passageways". Loved shooting it at qualifications, what a sweet shooter.

I bought a 870 Express, mostly due to the price. I was told by a former cop that I should throw it in the river. Later I swapped in a 870 police action; what a difference! Made several upgrades over time, pistol grip stock, foregrip, magazine, safety, Vang Comp'd the barrel. Fun stuff.

I was told to do so as well but I don't have any reason to do so yet. I put a couple hundred rounds thru it once a month and it haven't failed yet. Not gonna lie I was getting stuck shells at first but I just polished the bore and bolt and now I use it as home gun as well. That's how much confidence I have in it.

One of my favorite pump shotguns has always been the 870 Wingmaster. Not long ago I thought, sure would be nice to have another of the original Wingmasters. Boy was I surprised, I found one that had acceptable (honest) wear for the age, and still presented well. Over $500.00. I didn't buy it. Fortunately I still have a couple other favorites that I didn't let get away from me, my trusty Ithaca 37, and my favorite gun of all I own, my 20 ga. Winchester model 12 my dad bought for me when I was a kid. It was used, and he bought it from my uncle's combination gun shop and lawnmower repair shop in 1967. It still looks and functions like new. There's some wear in the bluing on the underside of the receiver from carrying, otherwise she's like new. Hickok does the last gun I'd get rid of reviews. That old old Winchester from my dad would be the one I hang on to. If the house was on fire and I could only carry out one thing, that's what I'd grab. The only way it leaves my hands is when I pass it down to the next generation who will have the same appreciation for it that I do. Rational? No, dollar wise I have guns worth much more. That model 12 has value beyond anything money could replace. It's become a part of the family, and my hope is for it to stay in the family forever, continue to harvest game and be part of the conversation after a good hunt. Oh, the ramblings of an old sentimental.

Ahhhh, my life-saving partner, 870..the Jedi mind trick, 12 gauge style......quells most chicanery instantly with relatively no effort. There is no language barrier, and no conversation required. All you have do to is rack the slide, and just like magic, you are automatically speaking a universal language. Two separate incidents proved this point. Once on night shift at 2am and once on evening shift about 5pm. Just the mere sound of the slide made two full-grown men empty their bladders into their britches. Cooperation was the name of the game and yessir and no sir after that.

Back before we all switched to ARs in our cruisers we relied on slugs in our 870s to increase range if needed. I was taught something about an 870 then that I’ve never seen taught or demonstrated since: With a chambered round and rounds in the mag it’s super simple to eject the chambered round without advancing another round onto the feed ramp and into the chamber. Simply unlock the slide and bring it back in a *controlled* movement to where it’s 2 fingers from the front of the trigger guard. The round in the mag won’t come into the well (pretty much the same effect as ‘short stroking’ the action). Reach into the well with your strong hand thumb, push up the feed and simply push the round in the mag forward a fraction of an inch. You’ll hear a click, which is the feed mechanism resetting. You can now pull the slide all the way to the rear, ejecting the chambered round WITHOUT feeding a new round from the mag into the chamber. With the slide all the way to the rear, you can choose to close the bolt on an empty chamber or drop a slug in the chamber and run the slide forward, ready to go. This is way faster and less fussy than picking a chambered round out of a half open bolt AND allows that bolt to be completely opened to drop in that optional choice of rounds. Also, with practice it can easily be done with the gun at high ready, without taking your eyeys off the target. To my knowledge, the 870 is the only pump gun that allows this manual of arms. It’s the reason I chose it over the Mossbergs.
