@@MyFatherLoves Based on the video demos, the router takes a LOT longer than the hand plane. Especially when flattening the face of the board.
@DKWalser
@DKWalser 7 ай бұрын
@@evanvandyke9819 I don't think that's a fair assessment, unless you're talking about an electric hand plane. That board had a fairly large crown and a lot of wood needed to be removed to flatten it. An electric router can easily take a heavier cut than virtually any of us can take with a hand plane. The router bit is about 2-1/4" in diameter, which means it takes a wider cut than a standard width bench plane (2") and a slightly narrower width than a #5-1/2 bench plane (2-3/8"). Since the router can take away more wood with each pass (heavier/deeper cut), and each pass is as wide, or wider, than a bench plane; this contraption should be much faster at flattening boards. I expect the bench plane will leave a nicer surface, and it will be more enjoyable to use, but it won't be faster.

Are people not satisfied to watch and enjoy video that is essentially presented to them for free. What he has done is fun and imaginative. I suspect he has a technique for using it in a way that is beneficial. It does not take much to be a negative Nelly and critique everything that comes along. I know it makes people who do feel like giants in their expertise. The reality is they are little people who cannot seem to enjoy life.

As a professional carpenter, this is just silly. I have planed large slabs with a router and a dedicated table and router sled. I also used a 2.5 hp router. Those 2 inch router bits are hard on routers and you will be sure to burn up you trim router doing this. Further more, a quality planer bit for a router will cost upward of $200. Hand planes are not that complicated to use. And if your a dedicated power tool guy buy an electric hand planer. Also you'll still need to sand anyway. That bit won't leave a finish surface. Nice build though. You might be able to modify that thing and get a quality iron and chip breaker in there.

That's a really nice sled idea for a power router. It's keeping in the same shape theme as a handplane, and definitely gives you way more control over practically everything that the router can do. It's a decent size larger than a normal jack or handplane footprint, though. Did it need to be or is that how it just worked out for what you were making at the time?

That router bit will set you back at least the price of a powered planer, unless you opt for a lower quality bit, which is known to cost you more when you'll have to replace it more often. The time and materials spent to make this abomination will also be forever lost. Buy a planer and a $50 random orbit sander, they will be a lot cheaper to run in the long run, they will do their job as designed, and not to mention you won't have to come up with awkward explanations when anyone asks what's up with that weird tool.

It's a great idea but with a couple of hand planes and a little time invested in learning to hone blades, the same can be achieved with old technology that doesn't create masses of dust and noise and actually gives a far smoother finish. I guess it's a good replacement for a power jointer and thicknesser if one only has a small shop.

A hand tool will always be better than a power tool in my opinion. It really all depends on what you were brought up on and how you were taught. I like to feel the wood, to converse with the wood, to smell the wood, to really make a connection with the wood. I could never do that with a power tool. All that said, this is a pretty interesting “plane”. You’ve crafted it beautifully. And I suppose the old and the new had to marry some day! Thanks for the idea, the build, and the video!

But it can be adjusted to 0,01 mm because it has a metal block as a casing. I am reminded of this thing because I thought how someone could build a similar thing with a small router.
