Where is that oscilloscope from!? I have a a mini freak and I love it! My first ever synth so I’m still learning a lot about it. Also would love your advice on the best way to set it up without using a computer! Thanks!

The scope is a Heathkit 10-12, but it is just a prop. I digitally overlay the waveform in post. As far as using the Mini without a computer, it should be good to go out of the box! That’s one of the benefits of a hardware synth, no computer! Just fire it up and plug in headphones, or run the audio output to some speakers or a mixer. 👍🏼

I have a Microfreak.. I m planning to buy a new synth after a 2 years.. I am torn between Modal Cobalt 8 and Minifreak.. This demo surely helps..

Cobalt sounds great, but the variety of oscillators on the Freaks really wins the day

@@SampathHebbar yeah, probably, but the Mini seems to have a lot more power under the hood leading to more sound possibilities

@@SampathHebbarThere is definitely overlap between the Micro and the Mini, but the dual oscillators, expanded modulation options, and polyphony of the Mini just take it to whole ‘nother level. The only way I would recommend the Micro over the Mini is if you are specifically interested in some of the Micro unique features, like the keybed and wavetables. As far as the Cobalt vs the Mini, you’ll have to decide for yourself which sounds better, because they are doing very different things. But as far as the devices themselves, I find the interface on the Mini much, much better than the Cobalt. The Cobalt has a very non-traditional layout that I don’t get along with.

Very new synth dabbler here. I really appreciate your videos. I am very curious to know how you are producing the patch examples from your minifreak. You're not in sequencer or arpeggiator mode nor is the hold button highlighted. Are you running recordings through the synth input jack?

When I shoot these videos, I am triggering the synth via MIDI clips from Ableton Live. This frees my hands up for tweaking!

Thank you for that detailed and tasty presentation out of the common freakishness. But is it just me or does the Minifreak lacks a little bass? I would just love to listen to a simple octave bassy kind of sound. Perhaps it’s the sine sub which is not in your face enough but I can’t help there’s missing something there. The microtonal thing and the modulation capacities are great, though. I am a little torn, to be honest. But good for my bank account, I guess. 😊 Thanks anyway: I looked for a review like that for a while.

Very nice demonstration. How good is the minifreak for classic analog sounds in your opinion?

All of the key components are there to quickly dial in classic analog style patches, and they sound pretty good to me! But if you crave the special sound you can only get from real VCOs, the MiniFreak isn’t going to scratch that itch. The MiniFreak’s oscillators are WAY more versatile than analog oscillators, but they are (proudly) digital sounding.

Yknow I had a feeling when I saw the first vids that this thing might be good for classic sounds! With the Pro 800 coming up it'll be hard to choose between them. Did you find it was time consuming to create patches? I like instant gratification synths (juno 6 etc).

I’d say it’s as streamlined as you could get with this many modulation options. The mod matrix works really well. The only way you could get to Juno levels of simplicity would be to have dedicated modulation depth controls, but that severely limits your options. I think the MiniFreak hits the perfect balance of modulation complexity and interface simplicity.

Thanks! This was done in Ableton live. I came up with a half dozen or so MIDI clips using some of my favorite patches that I made, recorded them to audio clips, then drug them into the arrangement view to put together this arrangement. All audio is straight from the Mini, no effects or post-processing. Just level and panning.

It’s a JX-03 with heavy post processing, but I can’t really remember any details beyond that. It was a long time ago!

Arthuria has a high quality grand piano sound (in some of their products) that they call "grand piano model d" - does anyone know if that is in the MiniFreak? (or if the MiniFreak has some kind of authentic piano sound?) - and/or if any of that requires paying extra? Anyone know?

There's not really any authentic piano style sounds in the Minifreak. Though, by combining the two oscillator engines, you could probably get a pretty decent piano. But, generally, emulating an acoustic piano is not ever going to be very convincing with typical subtractive synthesis. But when the Microfreak's sampling engine comes to the Mini, that may be a different story!

It is called a Heathkit 10-12. They are very old, so finding one in working condition may be difficult!

These are all custom patches made from an init patch! I usually write my reviews by pulling up an init patch and making 20-30 patches from scratch. That usually gives me enough exposure to the synth to write a thorough review.
