Nice video! I would like to buy my first hardware synth and I prefer analog semi modular. Under 500 which is the best one for a complete noob for start the journey? Thanks a lot

I would highly recommend stretching your budget and picking up a used Moog Grandmother. If you are patient and keep an eye on Facebook and Craigslist, you can find one for $600 or cheaper. The Grandmother is a great semi-modular for a beginner because it follows a very traditional architecture, and the patch points are located on the actual "modules", rather than amassed in a patch bay. This is the ideal layout for learning modular synthesis. Also, the Grandmother sounds absolutely astonishing and is a guaranteed future classic. If you can't stretch your budget, then I would recommend the PWM Malevolent. It's a much more aggressive synth than the Grandmother, but it sounds great, and it also has its patch points clearly distributed across the panel. You could argue that there are "better" semi-modular synths out there for the money, but for someone looking to start their journey, these would be the best teaching synths. Anything with a more complex architecture or a patch bay style layout is going to have a much harsher learning curve.

Loved the video, and very sensible (even if I didn't like the treatment of the MPC, even if I don't like them) and I might actually pick up a KOII as a result. I got the original pocket operator PO33 KO largely as something fun and accesible for making beats that my kids can use. My 8yo daughter can sample hitting a metal bar at the playground and work with it right there, make a little beat, put some vocal phrase in "I'm thirsty" is the main lyric from one of them haha. But it's pocketable, Mic, Speaker, Sampling - can set in and out sample points, pitch up or down, lowpass / highpass accross one knob range. It's great. But the KOII with it's far superior built in speaker and midi IO would be far better for 'actual' creation around the house - only downside is it doesn't fit in your pocket. Anyway. My only nitpick in your video is that I LOVE my OP-1 Field, it's just a pity about the price. But even the original, I don't consider it a toy - you've said there's never been a modern equivilent of the SK-1, and I think the OP-1 is exactly that. (except for price) Instant 1 key sampling from the built in mic and playback, But it's like an SK-1 with a built in four track portastudio and effects and some synth engines. For me, I think more in terms of notes on a keyboard than pads, having grown up with a Piano in the house since I was a kid. But I can take OP-1 anywhere and have sampling, effects, overdubbing, audio recording. For me it's great. Definitely not for everyone though, I get that.

What a fantastic demo with a fair and balanced review. I snagged one when it was first announced, but I have yet to open it. I can't get myself to disrupt that beautiful packaging. :-) I have a soft spot for old school 'memory management' style sampling. My first sampler was an unexpanded Ensoniq EPS with 512 KB of memory. I became a MASTER of getting the most out of that limited memory. Sadly most modern samplers (including my MPC X) don't give off that same vide. This K.O. II seems to do so. I gotta get mine going.

What are your thoughts of this as a sketch pad for in bed, restaurants etc. do you think it has enough to get me to an 8 bar loop that I can take into the studio
@Bloom_Music
@Bloom_Music 17 күн бұрын
It definitely excels as a sketch pad. You can build something quickly using the commit function, and I find its arrangement tools very intuitive. It will be familiar if you have any experience arranging in Maschine. However, transitioning into the studio is going to be cumbersome. With no export tools, you’ll have to record each channel one at a time as audio. If you embrace this limitation creatively, you can use it as an opportunity to record a unique take of each track using the various performance effects. The end result will be something more organic and alive, rather than just sounding like a loop.

@@Bloom_Music hey man. Thank you for the detailed response. I really appreciate it. That’s what I figured. I’m not to concerned with workflow quirks as I started on a akai s5000. But this exactly suits what I want. Quick, fun, sketchpad. Although I am also considering a polyemd mini. Which might be too much. I need something with less options so I actually make something instead of tweaking it endlessly. PS, I bought my mini freak because of your videos and I am loving it. Can you do a favour for me? Can you harass arturia for the mini freak osc in an update. Thanks bro love your content

Great review and walkthrough of the Minifreak. I did notice you said your Matrixbrute collects dust because of the Steiner-Parker filter. That’s ashame considering the deep capabilities of that synth and it having a ladder filter as well. There’s so many ways to configure the two filters that I don’t find it lacking in any way.

Comparing a VA to an analog synth just doesn't make sense. Of course you can go way deeper into osc tones and modulation but you are far from the sonic qualities of, let's say, a prologue. Anyway, I think the minifreak is a beast and perhaps the most versatile VA out there.

When you sampled the analog synth and played it back as a pad, would it behave the same way as doing this in ableton with simpler or sampler? If you need to use sampler what would you look for in the settings?
@Bloom_Music
@Bloom_Music Ай бұрын
Generally, yes, you can do the same thing in Simpler. The big difference will be the sound and the way that Simpler pitches your sample. (At least the last time I used it), Simpler doesn’t have any “old school” pitching modes; it just uses the same stretching algos that it uses for clips, which usually try to maintain the quality and character of the original samples. So, while Simpler can achieve the same type of sampling, the results will sound very different and won’t have that classic lo-fi vibe.

2:15 You forgot the free VST offers far below the given price point. Hybrid analog or not, one knob per function and "character" don't differentiate it enough.

It’s a pretty simple device, so if you are tech savvy, you shouldn’t have any problems. A lot of the gripes people have with the workflow are because it doesn’t work exactly like most other devices in the segment, so being a “noob” might actually make it easier for you, because you won’t have to unlearn another workflow to learn this one.

Nice video. I like your idea about throwing it in a bag with a midi controller so you can use it as your portable sound bank. As a sequencer I think its a fail, and as a groovebox its definitely a fail, but I can see it being a great device as just a pure sampler to combine with a more robust sequencer or use to jam with friends.
