I still find the entire POTA saga of the original run a mind-blowing experience. When I nabbed the original 5 films on DVD, I decided to add the TV series (also on DVD) to my collection, and while I found the TV series "not as good" as the films, it was still pretty decent, and I was disappointed to learn it was unceremoniously cut short (canceled), with a couple of episodes unaired (which I think are included in the DVD set), without benefit of a formal conclusive episode to wrap things up. I really wish that shows which get suddenly canceled, are either granted a proper 1-2 episode finale, or at the VERY least, a "scrolling epilogue" that is added to the "last" episode in the series that provides some closure for viewers.

Loved this series. Eventually bought it on DVD and finding out there was an unaired episode on it. The series dealt with quite a few matters eg: malaria, torture to gain information, hero worship, and above all, slavery. I always smiled when I heard Mark Lenard as Urko pronounce the word astronaut

TV series based on films have generally been unsuccessful. In all likelihood, "POTA" would still have been a ratings failure even if CBS had put the show in a better time slot.

Planet of the Apes back then was a phenomenal in the 70s. I was always looking forward to CBS showing the movies and was really excited when the series came out. True it didn't have this spark the movies had but it was still enjoyable.

Always looked forward to the POTA series when it was first airing, getting the dvd boxset much later the formula of each episode was much more obvious. Still love the opening theme though. And the whole Apes concept. The Marvel comics opened up the world a lot more.

During the 70's, here in the NYC area, WABC ran "The 4:30 Movie" which were movies edited down to an hour and a half and shown every afternoon before the local news broadcast. Often, The 4:30 Movie featured week-long themes where they would air similarly themed movies every day for a week. There was "Godzilla Week," "Monster Week" and others. "Ape Week" of course featured most of the original Planet Of The Ape films (The first was shown in two parts over two days so "Battle" never made the cut for Ape Week.) Ape Week was very popular and led to a SECOND Ape Week. This second week featured "movies" that were actually two episodes of the TV series edited together into one flick. They actually got Roddy McDowell to reprise his Galen role and film book end hosting sequences that aired before and after each. On the last day after the last movie, "Galen" told the audience that Alan and Pete eventually found a way home!

They did the same thing in Texas at the time. Fun memories as a kid watching those afternoon films. I also recall during the APES weeks showings they also had some behind the scenes material they would show some days.

Top of the morning to you, Jonny! My introduction to Planet of the Apes was during that "Movie of the Week" showing that you talked about. I was a young child, and the movies appealed to me right off the bat. We were allowed to watch such "violent" content back then, and I am very glad for it. When the TV show came out, I noticed a lot of differences between it and the movies, but felt it could be explained away by being the "first go through" of the paradox. The series took place in the original timeline, before Taylor's ship(and Brent's) landed back on Earth the first time, which changed the timeline. As Yoda put it in Attack of the Clones, "Truly wonderful, the mind of a child, is." Needless to say, because I had fallen in love with the movies and the show, I ended up with all the toys. Still have some of them, despite being in horrible condition. Hey, they were well used, don't judge. ;) I want to "side note" for a moment; I am not a fan of reboots, remakes, reimagining's, etc. However, the recently done trilogy of Apes movies were well written, well acted, and overall, very well done. Let's not mention the Tim Burton one... the less said about that, the better. Growing up in the 70s, and coming of age in the 80s, was truly a wonderful thing to experience. We had entertainments, such as Planet of the Apes, which gave us a measure of social commentary, without beating us over the head with an Agenda. The commentary was there specifically to make us think, rather than believe a certain way. It opened our minds to possibilities undreamed. I look forward to your next video. Have a wonderful day!

As a child, I enjoyed this series far more than ANY of the 'Ape Sequel movies'. There was great quality in this series and acting by Roddy McDowall, James Naughton and Ron Harper. Unfortunately, the series was EXPENSIVE and it was running against hit comedy series like "Chico and the Man" and "Sanford and Son". It was destined to be cancelled after only 14 episodes (only 13 aired on TV). The entire series is available on DVD. I recommend, especially for young 'Ape' fans. Sequels like 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes' (mutants and atomic bombs) were too scary for young viewers. This series is good 'Ape' family fun!

I absolutely love the original Planet of the Apes movie series (that was my “thing” growing up before Star Wars). And I also loved the TV series and had all the Mego dolls, paperbacks, etc. Although short-lived, this series will forever live in my heart! Roddy McDowell was amazing and I thought Ron Harper & David Naughton made the most of it. Too bad sci-fi shows weren’t given a chance to thrive back in the early/mid-70s, as this show could’ve grown into something really great and long lasting.

I read an interview with Roddy McDowell once right before he died, he said that the cancellation of this show was his biggest professional regrets. He said "There were so many stories left to tell." As I recall the plots were formulaic as they say here, but some of these episodes were social commentary and hold up as well as the early Trek, if not better, IMO

Funny Mr. Naughton mentioned 'The Fugitive'... Because Virtually ALL US TV Sci/Fi (apart from anthology series!) Fits 'The Fugitive' templet! IE... Hero is seeking something WHILST being ruthlessly pursued by someone / thing! Going from place-to-place & making things 'just a little bit better' when they move on! It's my understanding that even Ellison's 'A Boy & His Dog' Teleplay (had it been picked up) would have gone the same road!

The original 1968 movie will always be my favorite, I showed my nephew and niece my Blu-Ray of that movie and they were really into it, although before the end of the film he was able to figure out that this was taking place in the Earth of the future. You could make a drinking game out of this. Every time the narrator says "Plana" of the Apes, you take a drink, and by the time you completed the nine-and-a-half minutes of the video, you'd be flat-out drunk. I'm teasing because I appreciate the video, and for the first time in decades learned a few things I didn't already know. And because I was Gene Roddenberry's fitness trainer a few years before be passed, I wish I had known he had this kind of involvement in my favorite franchise of all time because I would have ambushed him with all sorts of questions.

Right after the last Apes film came out in 1973, America was pretty much all "aped out" by then to continue to follow this craze on television in 1974. In 1975, a cartoon version of this came out but would not last long. There was an episode of the Mike Douglas show in the early-mid 1970's where Mike himself was made up in an ape mask during the program. I was an American soldier and know full well how ungodly uncomfortable greasy war paint is to wear on one's face and can sympathize with the Ape actors as Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter.

I love this show and have the DVD set. I honestly wish it had at least gotten a second season. I loved the writing, the characters, the music, the actors, everything. They put it on too late in the evening and put it on opposite Sanford and Son, basically setting up the show to lose. One correction though: 4:13 Urko never sent anyone to protect Virdon and Burke. He wanted to execute them immediately. Galen helped them escape and foiled a plan amongst the gorillas to murder the two, becoming a fugitive in the process.

To an 8 year old boy, Planet of the Apes, (POTA) had everything, ie space, adventure, and "Monkey's on Horseback with Rifles" I just loved this series, to a wide eyed 8 year old, POTA it was magical, and as a 8 year old anything was possible! Sadly in the UK it was shown on Saturday morning Telly, just before World of Sport at 1pm, So it basically was deemed a Children's program, it may have already been dead an buried before it's uk airing, but I loved it, and it and all the POTA films are as valued in my DVD collection as Stargate, but i have other 60's and 70's Classic such as Kojak, Hawaii 5 O, The Sweeney and many others. Born in 71, I discovered POTA is the late 70's as Saturday Matinee's and syndicated re-runs. I can remember being terrified of an apes run society and their experiments on the humans the found in the original 1968 film. These days I really enjoy the original film and it's first sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes and find them both very re-watchable. The others are kind of mediocre for me, but I did have the whole line of Mego Toys that came out, and still wish I did. But we played with our toys as kids and they are lost to the ravages of time and my Mom's garage sales while I attending college in later years.

The ship in the first film did not have the gull wing hatch. It was larger and had a circular hatch in the nose. Burke, Virdon and Jonesy were NOT in suspended animation. There was no room for the cryo-chambers. The ship in the first film was much larger.

I was 7 years-old in 1975 and watching this show during its original broadcasts was my first exposure to the Planet of the Apes. I remember some time after I had first started watching the show, I was given a Planet of the Apes coloring book. But I remember being upset because it was based on the original Charlton Heston film and not what I was familiar with. That was something of a pattern in my childhood. My first exposure to several famous films wasn't the films themselves but spin off TV shows, usually cartoons. For example, I used to watch the Filmation Fantastic Voyage cartoon as well as their Journey to the Center of the Earth cartoon. Now I really wish some streaming service would offer the Filmation cartoon library. Though if I could only pick one show it would be the Hanna Barbara produced Banana Splits. I really loved the Arabian Knights and Three Musketeers cartoons that aired as part of that show. I was less a fan of the Jan Michael Vincent/Ronne Troup live action Danger Island serial. But I had a real crush on Ronne Troup on My Three Sons.

Personally, I kind of liked the "Planet of the Apes" TV series even though it wasn't in any way perfect. I also LOVED the "Apes" movies because they were unique in every way from 1968 to 1973. As for the 2001 remake, it was so damn awful because it was laughable and a total mockery of the themes that were presented in the original films. As for the later reboots of "Rise...," "Dawn...," and "War...," I would admit that I had a hard time with those movies because they were so unalike the original "Apes" films as well. Anyway, the "Apes" TV series had some interesting moments as well as the way the plots of the episodes were presented in the best science-fiction way possible.

Realize that this TV series is set 1000 years after Battle for Planet of the Apes but that movie is a resetting of the timeline and a new 'future' that the original 1968 movie was not going to be that same new future. Meaning when Cornelius goes back in time with Zira they change their own past, or tweak it, and so the Humans and Apes are living in 'harmony by the end of that movie speaking of Caesar as the Lawgiver, but the re-ignition of Ape superiority and human fragility fracture this harmony, and why can the humans talk? Because remember the timeline was re-set and humans lived alongside Apes in a new society so that the world Taylor found was not going to be the future. That also means the humans who are mutants in Beneath the Planet of the Apes need not be the future human offshoot either.

Fun Fact: I was intrigued when the final current film War for the Planet of the Apes explained the mute humans as the result of a type of virus that effected the intelligence centers of the brain.

I actually think the cartoon series of planet of the apes called return to the planet of the apes was even better then the live action tv show as it was more closer to the book the original movie was based on with the apes having modern technology such as tv cars and radios and felt more exacting and moved at a faster pace if this series had been that it meant have had a longer life though I did like this aswell it's just a shame nether show lasted beyond there first series without conclusions.JB would love to see you do a retrospective review on the animated series.

Yep the animated series was close to the MONKEY PLANET book. Of course in the books the humans were mute and running around nude. There really were much more like animals than even in the films I guess.

Really enjoyed the first movie, I thought the TV slow was cheesy and cashing in but I enjoyed it anyway. Another sci-fi from The late 70's was Quark staring Richard Bengerman as space garbage collectors. Light-hearted and funny, but cancelled after not too many episodes.

Their biggest mistake was not using Jerry Goldsmith. He created the most iconic soundtrack of all time for the 1st movie.

ArchEnema 67 -I agree. That is one of my all time favorite soundtracks. Jerry Goldsmith is underrated. However, I do see him getting a little more praise now. Like so many greats. Sadly, after his passing.

@ArchEnema 67 - Well, Goldsmith USED to do his music scores for television BEFORE he ended up doing only movies for the rest of his career. So I can understand what you were saying about Goldsmith.

Sorry you didn't mention Marvel's black-and-white comic series that took place sometime between "Battle" and the TV series. It featured a couple of young people, one human and one chimpanzee, named Jason and Alexander, on the run from the authorities, and was interspersed with similar comic adaptations of the five films. (You also didn't mention that James Naughton's brother was David Naughton, of "I'm a Pepper" and American Werewolf in London fame.)

I wish this series had a proper ending and used some of the scrapped scripts. I’d say an even 28 Episodes would have been good.

I would like to see a re-boot of the original series with that same style of Ape, not like the new movies, but due to advances in technology realize a more realistic portrayal would be one where the apocalypse happens much farther in the future and thus they have to advance human civilization much further than the 20th century. That is not easy to do so maybe the Apes or Astronaut encounter Robots or Androids the more advanced humans left behind, or AI and many other possibilities. The Apes were largely pre-industrial technology, had rifles and pistols, and basic cannon. Largely speaking they were effectively more like a 19th century fighting force.

The ape tv show, as u say, u could tell where studio cut costs especially makeup. It seemed like the same type storyline every week. By the time the tv show appeared the franchise was getting a bit long in the tooth. The last feature was more silly than the rest of the films and even in the sequels u could see where studio cut costs.

The series could have been so much more; it didn't live up to its potential. One problem is that the characters were too one dimensional. The astronauts were always so smart, innovative and ethical, whereas the villains of the episodes were always ignorant, stupid and corrupt. The movies, especially the first one, had an ambiguity to the characters, where reasonable viewers can see both sides of the argument; this was absent from the show and the show suffered because of it. It was fun to see different parts of the ape civilization and I it was always enjoyable to a degree, but the scripts never were outstanding. I would be interested to see what Rod Serling's scripts were like and if he could have improved the show with his creative talent.

The show was never given a chance, it should have taken a break at Christmas and than come back in the spring, to allow time to tweak the show, but it was cancelled right before the Holidays and never came back, that's a lot of time and effort wasted.
