This is a underrated movie. I've seen the uncut version & yes it is quite violent...especially from the early 70s. There's a significant social economic political message that still exist today. I absolutely loved the funky 70's music used in the background. Oh hell yes!! Good movie. Arguably the best sequel to the original.

Great review! I recently watched the uncut version which restored the more diabolical version of Caesar. Little question, it’s the better version, but then doesn’t quite line up with the kinder, gentler version of Caesar in the following film. “Escape” essentially setup the creation of a new timeline, then “Conquest,” one could say created a key split-off point in that timeline. One version in which Caesar became a bloodthirsty tyrant, leading to a planet similar to the hellhole we saw in the first film, and the theatrical release which setup the alternate timeline we see in the final film and the TV series: where humans remain intelligent living side by with the apes-not quite in equality, but better treated than they had been in the previous timeline, until eventually human and ape school children are being taught side by side.

Movie sequels and series are tough. Often the quality declines with each new movie (we're looking at you Terminator, Police Academy, Robocop). Apes is different. While "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" is a little campy, lowpoint, the series finishes strong with "Conquest" and "Battle."

A BIG PROBLEM with the "original" Planet of the Apes series were the 'sci fi' writers not being familiar with the Actual Science of Physical Anthropology/Darwinian Evolution. From the science documentaries films done by multiple anthropologists done by Jane Goldall & others from the late 1960s into the 70s it clearly showed Chimpanzees did eat "MEAT" & were quite Combative (warlike?) in their abilities of planning warfare. Now during this period of studies (late 1960s into the 70s, a claim made by an extreme minority view of "off the wall" researchers; & I mean; way off of left field types claimed they had "proved" we had spun off from a group of Chimps who were 'addicted' to violence/warfare--a sort of "killer ape"..has been shown to be total nonsense (simpler to some 'Saturday Night' types) who claim some 'ufo reports are 'PROOF POSITIVE' that ALL ufo claims prove are of tri- dimensional travellers--way off the rational tract.) The supposed 'Killer Ape' supporters would always show a photo of a Baboon--not even close biologically/genetically to chimps & "us"..the chasm between US & Chimps is somewhat 2-folded..only ~1-2 chromosomes difference is astonishing close but at the other point astonishing gigantic! If we had developed from a supposed killer ape we never would have contined but died out. For with our chimpanzees' ancestors show incredible tender & caring of their offspring and related biological concern for their species..(see research on how in their ancient "graves" how careful the remains of their ancestors including items placed within their graves were placed items of importance including other animals laid next to them. Another MAJOR point(s); their weren't many of them (found) & even so their weren't many of them from a statically #; but were clearly present. Say a "family" of 8-15..most had to sleep which left an extremely low number of their kind to look out for those that slept/ rested. Doesn't take much to kill of a small number of a FAMILY...lots of dangers faced them which meant a good chance of being exterminated by Nature; but they wern"t...We developed from a being(s) who did care for the larger group--to protect them..killer apes wouldn't do that but a "creature/SPECIES WOULD..SEE THE WORKS DONE BY GOODALL/LEAHY FAMILIES WORKS & OTHERS

Adding in the original films it was emphasized that Zera & others were plant eaters & weren't "aggressive" in reality based on Physical Anthropology/Darwinian studies they were meat eaters & very capable of defending themselves if needed

They all watch the original movie then someone says to watch the new ones and that's it. They never go back to the classics. Now that Kingdom is out I don't think they hold up as well as the classics either.

This was the first Planet Of the Apes movie I ever saw when I was a kid, with my parents, at the drive-in theater. So I thought it was the first one. I've seen almost them all in my years. But I didn't realize til very recently, that Conquest was actually the 4th movie. And I just rented and watched, online, Escape from the Planet of the apes. I often find Time Travel movies confusing. I've heard it said, that time isn't a straight line. It's a circle. But where does the circle begin? And where did the Planet of the Apes begin? I mean, apes became people's pets, after a virus from outer space caused the death of every dog and cat in the world. Later, apes became servants and slaves and were inhumanely mistreated and abused. Ceaser began an uprising, that would eventually make apes the dominating species, and man reduced to animal species, status. THE PLANET OF THE APES, the first movie, '68, takes place 2,000 years in the future. The three Apes escape the earth, at the end of the second movie, just before the earth is destroyed. They arrive back on earth, 2,000 years into earth's past. They are killed, (Murdered) but their baby servives. Who, years later, after all the dogs and cats in the world, die from a virus, from outer space, brought to earth by Cesar's parents, starts an uprising among the Apes, that would eventually lead to Apes being the dominating species and humans being reduced to animals. So now we've made a full circle in time. So, WHERE DOES THE DOMINATION OF THE "PLANET OF THE APES BEGIN?

I'm sorry but I never rated Conquest that highly. While I can understand Caesar being an evolutionary advanced ape from the future, it doesn't make sense that the contemporary apes in zoos would make the same evolutionary jump in only a matter of a few years. Alas, that is the one big flaw in the whole Conquest and Battle saga. The evolutionary progress of contemporary apes would've been painfully slow with Caesar being the only talking and upright walking species of great ape on the planet for another couple of millennia.

It is a group with more names than any other, maybe ever in history. In school they called that an identity crisis. And in the 21st Century they have already rebranded again. Don't like what they are called now? Wait less than 10 years for the newer more improved name to come to be, but then never ever use one of their prior names they chose and used or you will be deemed a RA CIST!!!! Nice review but your Tom Scott music is off. The only cue that was used from any Apes films was the Scarcrow cadence from Pota68. It was not his choice, Scott was not giving time or budget to create a proper riot score but pulled it out with friend Lalo Schiffrens advice and guidance. The very ending music from Goldsmith was put in by executives to cap the ending on the original cut and then release cut. No other music from any Apes films was used and cut not use Battle music which came out a year later. The pre title sequence was cut for violence and much of the footage was repurposed for when Caesar runs around the city at night before his execution. Tom Scott's music is great and second to Jerry Goldsmiths score for Pota68. The blu ray is pretty good, the Violent edition, but it's the Japanese limited version of Conquest's release in 1972 that was used to branch the violent original riot. We will probably never get the original preview edition in totality with the pre title sequence and repurposed shots edited out later on. Their so much about Conquest that was futzed with and it would be a small miracle it we ever get this preview version on disc especially with Disney holding the purse strings. Take care, John M.

Made at a time when sequels to successful movies were given about HALF the budget to work with . . . and yet they still managed to make an entertaining and thought-provoking film. Imagine if all the huge-budget movies made since then had been forced to work with half as much money each time -- so many movies with seemingly unlimited resources at their disposal, and yet they lack lustre, such as the STAR WARS prequel and sequel trilogies, neither of them anywhere near as entertaining as the first STAR WARS and EMPIRE. With Paul Dehn scripting each of the sequels -- and devising the plot for BATTLE, which the Corringtons scripted -- we APES fans had the good fortune to see compelling stories told to further flesh out this cinematic universe, despite the fact that the budgets were cut with each subsequent film. If you don't have a good story to tell, it's best not to even try, and at least Paul Dehn had good stories to tell, with each chapter in this 5-film saga taking us to a new place with new conflicts and surprises.

They were all made on the cheap after the first one (planet of the apes), but this fourth installment is third on my list of the classic apes movie series. I love the plot of the apes eventually taking over and the big battle to do so. It’s done so we’ll that it really does feel like the whole human race has fallen even though it’s only happening in one US city. The acting is great especially by the antagonist governor and McDowell. You can see how they really care to do their best. I don’t waste my time with the inferior modern series as it’s just cheap and lazy cartoon CGI and if I want cartoons I can watch scooby Doo. Real life items must be made of real material or it’s a lazy cheap inferior production. Thank goodness classic Hollywood only had practical effects so they made them the proper way during the best century of ideas and originality.
