I like The Avengers too, but it’s not sui generic. To be fair it was outdone by The Prisoner, Twilight Zone, I Spy, and in recent years Sopranos, Homeland, Americans, Billions, Wire, others. Then again, watching paint dry, grass grow or baseball would fascinate me if Diana Rigg were the painter, gardener or catcher

As a teenager in the mid 60's to me the black & white episodes seemed more dramatic and serious. Once it went to color, the vibe became more light-hearted. More importantly, Diana Rigg in color was an epiphany. I believe TV Guide called her the most beautiful woman on either side of the Atlantic. And her chemistry with Patrick Macnee was off the charts. Steed and Peel - Best crimefighting duo ever! (The less said about the movie, the better.)

In every interview both he and Diana Rigg spoke very warmly of the other. Their onscreen “chemistry” was matched by a very amicable offscreen one. They, in fact, wrote the witty dialogue for the beginning scenes where they invariably came across a body or two-the writers weren't much good at it-so they seem to have got on fairly well.

For sheer class and elegance, nobody before or since has matched Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee. They still remain the best-dressed couple in TV history. "The Avengers" hasn't been touched in six decades, because the lead actors both had unique chemistry. Sheer brilliance. Nobody has ever worn a bowler hat better than Patrick MacNee. Gone, never to be forgotten. A fabulous tribute to a much-loved series.

The first actress cast for Emma Peel was Elizabeth Shepherd. They got as far as shooting the first episode and a half before deciding that she simply wasn’t right for the part. So they paid her off and went actress-hunting again. And found Diana Rigg.

According to the book _The Complete Avengers_ by Dave Rogers, the casting team “found a beautiful actress called Elizabeth Shepherd ... who had been dubbed one of the most beautiful of the current British actresses, and she was signed for the role. However, Miss Shepherd failed to impress the producers, or ruffle the characteristic well-bred charm of Patrick Macnee. Aftere viewing rushes of the first episode, _Town of No Return_ , they decided that, although an accomplished actress, she didn’t give the character the light comedy touch they were looking for. Having spent over £120,000, they stopped the production half-way through _The Murder Market_ , and Elizabeth Shepherd was dropped.” The writer goes on to say: “With an impressive range of Shakespearean roles behind her, it is difficult to understand why Miss Shepherd failed to demonstrate her pedigree to the producers.” Nevertheless, there we go ...

There was never a show like The Avengers. I watched in cosstantly while growing up. And I have to admit the John Steed/Emma Peel were my favorites. I thought the remake was okay. In the US there was a time when CBS would air these shows at 11:30 at night. I couldn' tell you why. The only late-night talk show at the time was Johnny Carson. David Letterman didn't come along until years later. Anyone we got shows like "My Partner the Ghost." (Yes, that was a real show.) They made a big deal about airing the New Avengers, and I didn't hate it but it felt wrong wtthout Mrs. Peel. (I was a kid and didn't know how these things worked.) I think it also tried to be more spy then spy-fi. The movie on the other had made me wonder if the makers actually saw the show at all. I'm sorry, but it was boring and mis-cast. Then again Patrick McNee and Diana Rigg were just tough shoes to fill. You should do a show focuring on the more bizaar episodes. Like the killer plant, or the rich guy obsessed with trains because he felt car were replacing them. (That one had the fake train ride with the Alfred type doing all the work to pull off the illusion. I remember as a kid wondering what the interveiw process was like for that job.) What a great show that will never be duplicated. It was lightening in the bottle they'll never catch again. Great video.

I had a similar experience growing up. CBS was showing The New Avengers on Friday nights starting around 1978 and they'd throw in a few color Emma Peel episodes. I distinctly remember "Dead Man's Treasure," which is still probably my favorite episode for that reason. I loved Emma, but always wondered why she was called "Mrs. Peel." As a kid I thought she and Steed were married and I kept pestering my mom asking "why isn't she Mrs. Steed?" 😂 Guess I was picking up on the vibe and innuendo even as a youngster. Purdey was always an epic badass. I finally saw the Cathy Gale episodes on A&E in the early 90s and understood that she was the true trendsetter in terms of Steed's smart, capable female partner. Anyway, great classic show that still holds up to viewing today. 👍

I remember watching "My Partner the Ghost" on an independent station in Minnesota around the same time that "Space 1999" was in syndication; I later found out the original British title was "Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)". As for The Avengers, my official introduction to the show was on a station that called itself "TV Heaven 41" and started with the first episodes of the episodes with Mrs. Peel - I was immediately hooked. So when I found out about The New Avengers, I had to watch it. I wasn't sure about Gambit, but Purdy was well written and brilliantly portrayed by Joanna Lumley. I've got to say she's got range - New Avengers to Ab Fab.

@@DonnaLang42rockglobally My sister is a big fan of Randall&Hopkirk Deceased which one can still catch on ITV4 in the UK although we both remember when it was first aired. There was a great TV mogul Lew Grade who financed so many action series we now term cult TV and these were absolutely churned out in the 60s and early 70s. Then he moved on to invest in The Muppet Show and the movie Capricorn One. Roger Moore as The Saint appeared in nearly 200 episodes which is a world record for its genre. One name which frequently crops up in the credits was Dennis Spooner who was the brains behind the shows.

_The Avengers_ (1998) was horrible. It was universally panned by critics, with some considering it one of the worst films ever made. Warner Bros., the film's distributor, refused to allow any early press-screenings for movie reviewers that most releases attempt to generate interest in; such a decision is often made when a studio and/or distributor knows a film will not be received well and pre-release reviews would only be negative. Due to internal wrangling at Warner Bros., the decision was made to vastly cut down the running time after test screenings, reducing the 115-minute film to 89 minutes, sacrificing much coherence and continuity in the process. Rod Dreher in the _New York Post_ called the film "a big fat gob of maximum crapulosity, the kind of shallow, stupid, big-budget cow pile that smells of Joel Schumacher", referencing the previous summer's likewise poorly received _Batman & Robin_ . David Bianculli stated: "This Avengers film is so horrendously, painfully, and thoroughly awful that it gives other cinematic clunkers like _Ishtar_ and _Howard the Duck_ a good name." Jay Boyer in the _Orlando Sentinel_ said " _The Avengers_ is, without a doubt, the worst movie of the summer". Reception in Britain was equally hostile. The _Birmingham Post_ wrote " _The Avengers_ is being slated by critics as the worst film ever made - such a turkey, says one, that the makers should have handed distribution to (mass turkey producer) Bernard Matthews". Alan Jones in _The Radio Times_ said "the cult 1960s TV series gets royally shafted by Hollywood in this stunningly designed blockbuster that's stunningly awful in every other department... Terrible special effects and zero chemistry between Fiennes and Thurman make this notorious disaster a total waste of everyone's time and energy". The _San Francisco Chronicle_ gave the rating of an empty theater chair.

Great summary of this great series. I remember my local CBC channel would air it every Friday night at 10:00 pm. We never saw the early episodes with Honor Blackman until years later. The episodes they showed back then were the Emma Peel episodes with Diana Rigg. It's no surprise it was a huge hit as Rigg and Macnee had great chemistry playing off each other as Peel and Steed. I can't recall if they aired the Thorson episodes back then, but most of those just weren't at the same level of quality as the ones with Rigg. One of the fondest memories of my childhood. As far as the movie goes it's best forgotten as it was utter garbage. I doubt the people who made it had any real idea of what the Avengers was about.

Also Mother was introduced as a foil for Steed in series six after initial episodes with Tara King did not meet expectations. Brian Clemens and Albert Fennell were brought back onto the show to fix the issues, reshooting scenes and reworking the existing episodes. They also brought back Diana Rigg to film a final episode "The Forget Me Not" to bridge the gap between series Five and Six and to help introduce Tara King properly, also providing a proper send off for the character.

"The Avengers" was such a great show in a time when there were many. "Laugh In" was the biggest show of all time and nothing else in that time slot was going to get any numbers. Great shows like that drifted in and out of reality in a way seldom seen now. While I favor one of the female leads, I'd rather appreciate all of them for being fantastic in their own way, and or course McNee was born for the role of John Steed. Great stories, great writing, great directing, "The Avengers" is in my top five 60s TV shows.

I was sure John Steed and Emma Peel were in love with each other, but they kept their true feelings hidden on order to concentrate on their investigations. The departure of Emma after her husband had been found alive was a very sad moment. You felt Steed was deeply affected by it, but it was wonderful to see her final exchange with newcomer Tara King. I remember during the 60s they came out with leather outfit like what she wore on the show and they were called Emma peelers

The first three seasons were in black and white. And a particularly murky black and white, at that. I think this was the same 405-line video process that the BBC had adopted for their first TV transmissions back in the 1930s. They seemed to have limitations in the editing. This is why you see sometimes they flub their lines, but have to keep going regardless -- reshooting seemed to be difficult to do. Also, videotape was expensive, and so the entire first series (with Ian Hendry) was wiped to reuse the tape -- except for two episodes which somehow survived. The first season with Diana Rigg was also in black and white. But the difference in clarity was astounding. I think this was shot on film.

Yes, I love "live on Tape" productions. Over here, Dark Shadows has the same charm.

Yes the 'Emma Peel' (series 4) was the first to be shot on film, which allowed more location shooting and helped the visual aspects of the episodes considerably - and because it was on film the Blu-ray remastering of these editions are very good.

Diana Rigg really made this series and the interplay between her and Patrick was so wonderful. Great show. The theme is really good too. Too bad it didn't last longer

i love thé one scene where diana ring shows she drives a Lotus sports car.. gorgeous never knew Honor Blackman was on the show before Diana I saw all the episodes with Diana but they never showed the Honor episodes in the States i would have loved to see that, she is the only one I can imagine liking as much as Diana whom i adored Honor has. a great strong presence which the actresses that followed Diana seemed to lack even though they were charming love the judo scenes with Honor always adored Diana's kung fu.. fabulous loved the black and white i remember as a child noting the change from bw to color ( i was watching reruns, i did not see series when it was actually airing first

Sean Connery was by far the best thing in the film adaptation. He seemed to be the only one who actually "got it". Maybe he watched the show in the '60s.

I watched the Avengers from the very beginning. I accepted every change as if it were a necessary part of the plot. My first love was Mrs. Peel. She did it for me. Of coarse it badly affected all the local girls, who could measure up to Diana Rigg when they were all trying to be flower children at that time? I have re-watched it 2 or 3 times. Wonderful stuff.

When I was in the UK, we visited Aldbury which doubles as Little Storping in “Murdersville”. I visited the Greyhound Inn pub which doubled as the pub where Hubert and Mickle hung out. And it was safe, nobody was shooting.

Unfortunately for us here in the US we never got to see Honor Blackman episodes until the early '90s I think it was on the A&E network. If you grew up with Diana and Linda as I did, these older ones took getting used to. I really like them and the Julie Stevens eps are a really nice touch. Truly, one of the most iconic shows ever. I hope more First season episodes will be recovered one day. A little side note, Ian Hendry guest starred in The New Avengers as a totally different character.

That would have made a great episode if he had turned up as a " long lost" Dr. David Keel. I always felt that they really " dropped the ball" on such a wonderful opportunity!!

Several episodes of The New Avengers was shot in and around my hometown. Richmond Hill, Ontario. Although I didn't know it at the time. My dad got me into watching the show. He liked The Avengers and he knew I liked weird stuff. I really liked the show and it got me into watching the original. I have been a fan of Joanna Lumley ever since.

I adore this series. I watched as a kid with my granny, late at night! Now I am watching it all again on Cala. Can you believe Emma Peels clothes, I would wear every one of them if I could lol! So sad she died not so long ago: one end of her life to All Creatures Great and Small at the end. She and Steed , the best. Although watching the Saint as well! All those shows just seemed so cool?
