It's so cool that Patrick Duffy wrote a novel to give us an end to this 40 years later. I bought it a few weeks ago, and then I see I'm not the only one thinking about the show.

I think every kid who saw this, tried to swim like the man from Atlantis for years. I’m 52 and every time I go to the ocean , mark harris swimming is the first thing that comes to mind when I dive into the waves. I have no other memories from the show. The swimming and the submarine.

1977 was probably THE best year for SciFi/superhero series in America. It is the reason I set my Shadows On the Road Not Taken in that time period as the main character gets to relive watching all his favorite television shows. You literally had Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman, The Man From Atlantis, the Six Million Dollar Man, Logan's Run, and the Incredible Hulk all in one year. It was glorious!

Nicely done...never seen that Taco Bell ad before ! Met Patrick a year after he left ATLANTIS while he was here shooting DALLAS...I spoke to him on the phone during a radio interview and he invited me to the set...He was very kind and patient to this nerdy teen who came loaded with ATLANTIS items for him to sign..He also introduced me to the rest of the DALLAS cast and let me watch them shoot that day...Met him again in the 2000s while he was doing the sequel series to DALLAS...He was just as nice as before.

I learned to swim using the dolphin/porpoise kick because of this show. I’d put flippers on, submerge, start swimming while I played the theme song in my head. My brother and I would see who could go the furthest under water. By the end of the summer we could stay under long enough to cover some impressive distances. We also raced other people who also wore flippers. They’d do the regular kicking/scissoring motion while we did the Man From Atlantis swim. We’d smoke them every single time. And every summer I jump in the lake with my flippers and I’ll do at least one underwater swim and I’ll hear the theme song again.

I very vaguely remember watching this as a child when it was shown on television when it first came out. I can remember being captivated by the Atlantian and trying to hold my breath for as long as possible when I had a bath in order to copy the main character. I also seem to recall he found his brother, who had had his webbing cut off his fingers and toes? Thanks for the review and memories of this series. 👍

That "Porpoise-Style" swimming technique can really work (especially with swim fins on your feet) for short bursts of power thru the water. We have Patrick Duffy to thank for that because we kids would not have thought of trying it otherwise. 🐬 The show was fun and original because everything else was about outer space.

@@hydrolito True, but not in the 70s and re-runs really didn't happen until the 80s. MFA was one of the few non-Space Sc-Fi series in the 70s, besides 6 Million Dollar Man (and if you think about it, Steve Austin was an Astronaut, so it has space origins. lol). Now if you include Saturday morning specials, there were a lot more non-space shows like Isis, and Shazam, but I digress. :)

This was one of the very last TV shows that Victor Buono would work on. The big poet was known for so much more than Batman and Whatever Happened To Baby Jane. He was also in Robin and the 7 Hoods, staring Frank Sinatra. Victor also appeared in the pilot for The Wild Wild West, and 2 episodes in Season 2 of the same show as Count Manzzepie. Victor release an album of his poetry called Heavy, and his book of poetry is title, It Could Be Verse. I always found Victor Buono to be an excellent and enjoyable actor that never took himself to seriously. His appearances in Man From Atlantis were just more of the jolly, big man and his commanding voice. He died far too young and Hollywood lost one of the most enjoyable actors in its history. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, and let me gush about one of the actors that I am a fanboi over.

If no one hired Patrick Duffy before 'Man From Atlantis' then I have to question their judgement. He always had a genuine likeability and sincerity in his performance and stood out in the same way that Bill Bixby did. The part of Mark Harris couldn't have been better cast. Wow, I had no idea (at least can't recall knowing) that this was originally going to be Sub-Mariner! So cool. I was a major Aquaman and fairly big Namor fan back then. So this show was an immediate win for me, even though I have only vague memories of the details of it. Back then I kept thinking that if this could be done then Aquaman or Sub-Marinor should be easy and had my hopes up. I even wished he'd show up on the Hulk. I think they both had a similar serious vibe. I especially liked the idea because we could then sort of get a Defenders with them and the TV movie Doctor Strange. So ironic it turns out the Namor connection was closer than I imagined.
