I've restored over 100 beetles back in the 80's/90's and never had an issue with the trim. You fit the trim which puts the rubber in shape and then fit to the glass. A learning process and admire your dedication to learn.

All I hear about the trim is it's a pain getting it in. Mostly people trying to push it into the seal and such. I don't know if they're using bad seals or what, using this way though, it was really easy. Thanks for checking out the vid!

l ove the rope Idea but it does help to get the trim the same shape as the window though I usually bend them into shape then push them into the groove

Yeah I did bend the rear window one a bit and it made it easier. I did try pushing it in, but the rope was way easier for me.

Dubworks thanks for the FYI about what window seals to buy and what not bye-bye ...I would want your money to go the right spot...... When i redid my Volkswagen restoration was only glass i replaced was the windshield....and managed to crack it...then I had the people at Volkswagen put another one in....front windshield for 58 Volkswagen back in 1970 to cost me $10 take care keep up the good work and do me a favor stay away from 5150 he’s got the fever I don’t mean the corona one of these days we’ll catch up on his stuff goes the side take care be safe junk Mando

I'm a retired VW Mechanic and used to be able to knock out a windshield install in 1/2 hour . Now I can't get the dang trim into the rubber, I'm leery of silicone because once it seeps between the glass and rubber the rubber won't stay put, you need to wash all the silicone off before retrying again . I'm going to see of Harbor Freight has a nifty pre made 1/4" rope tool, if not I'll make one out of old steel fuel piping . I miss my young strong & flexible fingers =8-) . -Nate

Mr. Werks, Your tutorial is very helpful, the easiest way to install the metal trim. I did use a plastic tool to guide and push in the cord into the groove. Also, I sprayed silicon lubricant into the groove. Question: Do you insert only the inner side of the metal trim into the groove? Thank you!

Thanks Raoul! Yes, you are only supposed to put one side of the groove in. When the glass gets put in the car, it gets locked in.

Newbie question: I spent a lot of time yesterday and had little success. Ugh... In the video, maybe I have the chrome backwards. It looks like the grooves of the trim face INSIDE toward the glass you went around, correct? I think I had mine facing out.

Yeah so the trim is shaped like a U channel. You want to take one leg of the U and press it into the seal. The other leg stays out and makes it look finished. Once you install the glass into the car, the rubber seal pinches around the trim and holds it in place. Hope that explained it better!

I've been trying to get this window in for several days. I'm extremely frustrated. Can't get the trim on without the rubber coming off. Your video is cut off at the bottom during the beginning of installing the trim. What in the heck am I missing? How do I get this stupid on?

I suppose it could be done, however I feel the German/ WCM seals are a superior quality. As long as the seal has the trim channel, you SHOULD be able to do it.
