It was a brilliant trick I learned from a glazier friend of mine, made installing windows so much easier.

I wonder if the chrome strips on the deluxe trim act as a lock strip for the rubber. If that's the case, I think when installing glass with the deluxe rubber, the rubber should be set in the opening first, and then the glass should be installed, and then the lock strip set in. The space the missing lock strip provides lets the glass into the rubber easily I think.

The aluminum decorative trim goes into the rubber once it has been installed onto the glass, then everything installs into the car like I do with this 67 here starting at about 16:20 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5OlfKOEia2smqMsi=g4oK3hJhlua2jumT

Did the early 1970s VW Bugs come with tempered or lamented glass side windows?
@Sam_Mebane11 ай бұрын
To the best of my knowledge, VW (as well as most all auto makers) started using tempered glass in the 50s for all the glass except for the windshield. It was considered standard practice at that point pretty much industry wide.

Did this for the first time ever to my bug 2 years ago. Wish I had known about the pen trick...it would have made installing the glass much less of a..... ...wait for it... PANE in the neck :D

I see what you did there!

Fold the outer lip out at your own peril. On my install the outer lip of the rubber won't lay out over the sheetmetal at the top and bottom front corners of the rear quarter windows. Instead they bend back toward the glass. If I don't get a response from JBugs with some kind of trick to fix it I'm just going to pull the glass again and reinstall it, this time leaving the outer lip folded under.

When installing the rubber seal, do your best to make sure the rubber is not pulled overly tight in the corners. Some manufacturers seals are "just" long enough to stretch in place around the glass. Work the rubber from the center or straighter areas towards the corner to alleviate some of the tension on the rubber at the corners. This will help to allow the rubber lips to relax when pulled around tight corners.

@@Sam_Mebane Thanks for sharing. These rubbers certainly aren't too short to stretch around the glass (they seem too long as you are trying to get them to stay on the glass). But I definitely started working the rubber in at the wrong spot, as I always start at the highest spot, which on these is the upper corner. Know any tricks for removing the windows again while sparing the rubber for reuse...and not damaging the headliner? I've managed to do it in the past. But it was such a struggle I always make sure to have new rubber now, and just cut the old out.

@@DarryllC as long as you aren't trying to remove the windshield the best way to remove the glass and seal and save the seal is to push, hard! I've used my feet before. Just make sure there is someone to catch the glass on the outside. The quarter and rear windows are tempered glass so it is very hard (but not impossible) to break them.

Do I need to install the cargo area carpet & padding before the back window goes in?
@Sam_Mebane Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, I do it afterwards as having the ventilation is nice when applying the glue. Either way will do.

ya my back window wont go in at all. It is off by like 2 inches at the top if i start at the bottom and vice versa. The corners wont seat at all. It has huge gaps. My wife and I have tried like 50 times and busted a couple window rubbers trying to get it on. If only it were as easy as he makes it look in the video... 67 bug btw, maybe its easier with the supers.

Your 67 has the same rear glass as this 1971 Super. The rear window is the same from 1965 to 1971.

Can you show how to do it with the chrome strip please

We do show the process in our Exterior Rubber DVD. The process is the same, but once the seal in on the glass, aluminum trim is installed into the seal.

Just comes down to experience, I've installed more glass than I can count. It's simple and easy at this point.
