I pretty much did the same thing you did, but I was actually able to pull off my steering without the tool somehow. It was years ago so I don't remember how I did it. But on the '69 it doesn't have the woodruff key so I put my wheel back on in the wrong place so I need to pull off again, but I've avoided it cuz it was such a hassle pulling it off the first time. This time I'm gonna use that tool you bought. Thanks for the tip.

That puller works better if it is upside down the bearing part. then it wont damage the steering wheel.

Removed the wheel on my 1961 panel bus with that same puller. That wheel was ON there! But that puller made pretty easy work of it.

Hi there, I would have made sure that puller bolt never came in contact with the steering shaft nut, damage can always result. The puller bolt should only really contact the steering shaft. As said leaving the nut on is good.

Hello again, mr CT. =) Oh, I've just noticed.. The washer over the spring which sits under the wheel is placed wrong, it's cutout is on the side.. =) Just to know. I was a little off the line in the last days so I didn't answer your question. Yes, R4 stands for Renault 4 or "quattrelle" as the french called it.. =) I've got 3 of those, one is scheduled for restoration asap, the other will follow soon, the third needs just a minor repair and some cosmetic fix. While I was trying to remove the steering wheel, I had similar problems and no correct extractor, as the steering wheel is different and meshed with splines like some gear kind. Same story, car 30 years old and I realy doubt that someone everremoved the wheel before. The dashboard lights didn't work at all as they were burnt out and you need to remove the wheel to access the dashboard. When you reset the wheel, put a very light coat of grease or copper grease to prevent the problem in the future. =) Keep on, I'm stalking you in search for updates! Hehe.

I've used this puller before. I bought one from an online store. However, my intention was to use it to remove the crankshaft bearing of my motorcycle, since it was due for connector replacement. As you can see, from the center, the material is thin, then gradually thickens until it is almost as thick as the puller itself. It is used by means of inserting the thin parts against the crankshaft bearing. The gap is really very small. At first, it just slightly touches a small part of the bearing. The two nut and bolts at the sides are then tightened alternately and slowly, thus making the puller like a wedge, dislodging slowly the bearing from its original position. This puller is not appropriate for this task of pulling off the steering wheel. It was named gear puller because in a motorcycle crankshaft, before the crankshaft bearing on the side of the timing chain, there is a gear for the timing chain. It is also released when the bearing is pushed off its position. I would have used another type, or maybe, made one for this purpose of removing the steering wheel. It would not have been difficult given the many other tools that you have, and some scrap metal around. Just look for the right leverage, with some nuts and bolts, and it would have been easy.

to be the grinch here you did more damage to the threads by trying not to do damage than if you had simply allowed the puller shaft to go down inside the nut and press against the center of the shaft. having the nut on was good and would have prevented the shaft from mushrooming but you could see that using the washers put all the pressure on that nut on the one side that caused the damage to the threads. run a dye to clean the threads and get a new nut to prevent further damage

Btw, if you returned the steering wheel after you have just pulled it, you will still go through the difficult process of removing it. That's how these things are made. They get forced fit into place, and the only way to remove it is through a puller.
