CT you should paint these to avoid rust , I would suggest to remove it (so you can also derust the underbody easier ) use 2k paint not 1k if you want durability, or even better power coat

Hello CT, Solvents such as diesel or kerosene that you appear to be using, work well. They use detergent in motor oil because it keeps the engine clean. I have never used it but TIDE or other strong detergents may work for external grime. Steam cleaning probably would not be practical in your garage. In any event, the A frame and parts look nice and clean. Ron

My dad would have flipped using that much solvent for such a small job, In my dad's world, you use a putty knife to scrape off the dried on grease caught in a tub, the dried grease is then thrown in the trash. place the tub back to catch the drippings fill a butter tub maybe a large one filled 1/3 of the way with solvent diesel, kerosene place the dish below where your working, use the round parts cleaning brush dipped in the solvent, brush a little catching the drippings back in the dish, dip brush. dip brush, dip... working from the top down so the solvent could penetrate as you go. The big tub catching what you didn't with the one your working from. My dad would then strain the goop from the remaining solvent let the solvent evaporate outside from the goop, soak up the remaining solvent with rags. Had I presented dad with more than a few ounces pasty solvents to dispose of he'd of First asked what the hell is that? and what I thought he was going to do with it? and how he should get rid of It? Then lectured me about the waste of products, money for the rest of the week! It was fun to watch cause I always made a bigger mess then he thought I should, I use to run the solvent through a coffee filter hide it and put a little in the gas tank of the mower or the car. Shhh!

Musta knocked ten pounds off that Kombi's deadweight tonnage! Looks like you're at an archeological dig site cleaning centuries of gunge off an Ægyptian artifact... Reminds me... hafta clean the melted belts from an old RCA 'Sound Tape' recorder. That's an exercise in narsty... Need to do it in order to be able to play some tapes recorded in the '60s of NASA missions - including the 'Moon shot'. Before we go, Rusty wants to know if you could move that skritchie brush a little to the left. A little more... right there... yes... YES! AGGGGGHHHHH... Ooh, dat feel good...
@garymucher95905 жыл бұрын
That type job isn't for everyone. But I would absolutely have to clean it if I owned it. You could use a spray bottle with a less flammable cleaner like Mineral Spirits or even Purple Power or the like, and a shorter bristle brush to assist in the removal of the greasy crud. But then I would have to remove each part and clean it further and prime and paint as well. Just my mental issues I guess. Thumbs Up!

why using diesel that is oil to remove grease and mud ? gasoline is working 2 times faster with certainly half the amount and you won't even need the degreaser at the end.
@smiffy10715 жыл бұрын
Tonton des Bois gasoline evaporates, and is a fire hazard. Diesel soaks into the grease, and gently dissolves it. I’ve been using it for years for this kind of work.
@Contantq5 жыл бұрын
It does work better but Its also much more flammable.

IMO mineral spirits works better for cleaning parts. evaporates over time so no disposal issues. Diesel can be recycled with motor oil though.
@VicAmor19444 жыл бұрын
I would have used a buck knife or even a putty knife to methodically scrape, to cut most of the built-up, heavy stuff... it would have made short order of it all and would have taken you down to metal a lot faster, a lot cleaner.

Dark Unicorn I’ve worked in the bus transportation. Industry for 30 years... trust me, a pressure washer just doesn’t cut it when removing old grease and dirt like this. Diesel fuel when used like this is perfectly safe, it can’t ignite with sparks or naked flames. It’s very cheap, and you can use it again....I’d call that a win wouldn’t you?

@@CTmoog Thanks and on the other side, try this. Do not soak with kerosene first. Us a soft to medium wire bristle brush dry to knock 90 percent of the crud loose. That can. be swept up with a brush and dustpan. Only then spray with degreaser, brake cleaner, or kerosene in a garden sprayer and go for the last ten percent. Don't ask how I know this
