Classic VW Fuel pump rebuild

In the next highly anticipated addition to my engine build series its time to rebuild the fuel pump.
Modern fuels are very aggressive to the older materials used in components such as fuel pumps. This is the main reason other than the pump just being old that I decided to rebuild it before fitting it to my freshly built engine.
If you are also intending to rebuild your fuel pump then hopefully this video will be helpful as a guild for you to do your own.

Nice video but one important step is missing and that is to bring the diaphragm on the correct tension by using a special tool known as VW328d.

Nice one Jamie👍🏼 My bugs are 73 and 76 and they use the later style pump. I had swapped one out for electric but I found the noise really annoying, so swapped back to E10 rated pumps on both a couple of years back. For the sake of £45 I swap them out each year now at service for peace of mind. Also I was running R9 rated fuel lines, but to my surprise they lasted not even a year before cracks appeared! Two years on E10 rated fuel hose from Cool Air and no sign of issues. I do wonder what the inside of the fuel tank looks like now though 🫣 The inlet looks good. If it works well do you think you’ll remove that exhaust riser flange and weld a plate in the rear tin?

Thank you sir. Yes that's not a bad idea. The rebuild kit that I used was not cheap so I hope its lasts. I've also experienced the same as you with the hoses. I was really shocked to see cracks after such a short period. Thanks for the tip I'll look into the hose you recommend. Do you regularly have to change your inline fuel filter? Jamie

I do swap my filters out each service, overkill really as I do less than a 1000 miles a year😂. I have moved away from the plastic ones now as I’ve heard they don’t like e10 though. I watched slades vw channel and he recommended a metal one that you can get in the US, so the last two years I’ve used a company called inline filters and it’s part number FF30616, about £10 including vat. I did email them initially and they said they’re e10 rated, so far no issues, that said I haven’t had a plastic one go on me since the 80’s when a service was something you done when your car stopped working 😂

@@philp4842 That's great, thanks for the tip and the part number. I'll check it out. I haven't had a problem yet with the plastic one but I do change them regularly. It does scare me though how quickly the rubber hose degrades. Would be good to be extra safe with the filters too. Jamie
