The return of the Brigadier, return of the Black Guardian, introduction of Turlough, an awesome score by Paddy Kingsland, continuity references galore and enough clever time travel shenanigans to make Steven Moffat drool with envy - Mawdryn Undead does not play around. Can only imagine Sesska's reaction if it was Ian who showed up as originally planned.

I'll probably never not be a little disappointed it isn't Ian. Brig is cool and everything but Ian's an all time great. On some level it's a shame but on the other hand it's nice that Ian and Barbara's story ends in the 60s where it started, they've not really been rewritten into very different characters (like the Brig is here, or Sarah Jane was in the 00s, or The Doctor is all the time).

I was guest visitor for the day at the BBC TV Centre when Ep 1 was being filmed. I was shown around the various sets by Peter Davison in his 5th Doctors costume eg The Tardis interior, the headmaster's office, the hospital ward, the alien spaceship. I met Nick Courtney and we talked about Pat Troughton and Jon Pertwee. Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton who gave me signed photos. I watched various scenes being filmed. I was 21 then. A magic day indeed. I met Janet F and Sarah S at Aldbourne Village (The Daemons location) a few months ago and we talked about my visit to the BBC that day...They were very pleased it had stayed with me to this day!

Mawdryn Undead is a real highlight of Season 20; David Collings is brilliant as Mawdryn (perhaps the best Doctor we never had), and it was great to see Nicholas Courtney return as the Brigadier after a seven-year absence. The decision to include the Brigadier and make him a teacher was because the original intent was for Ian Chesterton to return, hence the school setting, as Chesterton was a science teacher. However, William Russell proved to be unavailable and a swift rewrite was done to include the Brigadier instead. While it is great to see the Brigadier again, I still feel a tad disappointed we never got to see Ian return here since he's one of my personal favourite companions.

And it's such a rare thing for a Doctor Who story to take part in two different places in time, which is odd for a show about time travel.

I always love Nicholas Courtney's performance in this story. He manages to give the two versions of the Brigadier very different types of energy, which completely fit the journey the character has gone through from 1977 to 1983.

For those of us who had not seen much of anything before Tom Baker era of Doctor Who, all the clips were very interesting to see. It was in later years when PBS station purchased rights to available episodes. Or some were presented in convention video rooms. We gain a new companion as well. Season 20 is a look back of previous characters as part of 20th anniversary.

Thanks Jess! You really brighten up my Fridays. I really enjoy your reactions to Classic Who and loved your delight at seeing the Brig return. Good to see Nyssa in something less garish, I really like her costume here. Better than in the previous serial. This serial is surprisingly well-written by Peter Grimwade, who also wrote Time-Flight. Valentine Dyall is deliciously malevolent as the Black Guardian ("Keith" is very well behaved!;-)) The score by Paddy Kingsland is very bouncy and moves the story on at a great pace. Mark Strickson as Turlough is very watchable. Glad you are enjoying it so much after the snake stories...

It always amuses me that Ibbotson is constantly referred to as being dramatically overweight, (Turlough calls him Hippo, the Brigadier says his body would be less disgusting if he exercised more), yet the actor cast isn't exactly a chunky guy. The character is evidently supposed to be a Billy Bunter type, so I wonder if there was concern about a copyright suit (see Toymaker) as the character would still be in copyright, so he was visually changed.

It's tempting to get all meta about David Collings (Mawdryn) being in this, because he did go on to play an alternative version of The Doctor on audio. His previous appearance was as company investigator Poul in 'The Robots of Death', where he suffered from the curious condition of 'Robophobia' or 'Grimwade's Syndrome'. This was an in-joke, referring to production assistant Peter Grimwade, who always complained about being on shows with robots in them. So it's a nice coincidence that he wrote this story - and directed some not-really-robots in 'Earthshock'. Everything is interconnected.

With some of the DVD, and now Blu-ray, some effects on Classic Who have been digitally updated. In this story, the two-color matrix spiral behind Turlough and "the Guardian" can be seen as a haze-cloud, and the spaceship is 3-D not 2-D. And, the flashback, added to with other film clips, including what was then returned film of "Web of Fear" where AGL-S first appeared.

Hi Seska having Lethbridge-Stewart back after nearly 8 years away from Dr Who is awesome, and originally Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart was not the intended old companion to return for this story. It was to have been Ian Chesterton, and also I do wonder how this story, would have worked out Ian meeting the Doctor again now in his 5th incarnation would have been a shock to Ian since he had never seen the Doctor regenerate and was not in the 10th Planet story which introduced not only the second Doctor but also the Drs second most popular arch-enemies in the form of the Cybermen and also William Russell himself was either not available to return for Mawdryn undead or perhaps he did not want to go back to a series he had quit nearly 20 years earlier. I was pleased to see Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart back after 7 years away been no longer in the Army and no longer commanding officer of UNIT but now as schoolmaster teaching A-level maths is for me rather strange and also having the main villain the black guardian back was awesome too and I am pleased we got the original actor Valentine Dyall back after his last appearance in Dr Who with the 4th Doctor in the 6th and final story of the Key to Time arc.

The year this story was broadcast I was aged 14, and also stuck in grotty school and also I say the Doctor must have worked out that Turlough is not an earthling but an alien from another planet when Turlough asks the Doctor the question about could the TARDIS have been affected by the tangential deviation . I also found the loss of memory of Lethbridge-Stewart rather bizarre and also it was nice to learn that Sergeant John Benton was still alive considering the way he departed from the series in the Android Invasion and we had no idea if the real John Benton was alive or dead given how he was seen lying on the floor having been incapitated by his android duplicate . 11:05 You might have been subconsciously thinking Keith Partridge from The Partridge Family (what with the bird association)... 😉 EDIT: just FYI, the word "Mawdryn(n)" is Welsh which loosely means "undead" (or similar manifested spirit), so they are playing off that as a name for the character, himself. @@alwillcox Yes, true! -- apparently it was a bastardized use of the words, as you note, in adapted Welsh to mean (contextually) "undead", as a creation on the writer's part and relative to not wanting to use "gastdyn" ("ghost-man", as a stand-in for "undead", and a play off of "gastian/gaston" as a proper name). So we all learned something new today, lol! Thank you!

Some little facts about this story. The word Mawdryn is Welsh for undead. So the title of this story is literally Undead Undead. The music was created by Paddy Kingsland, who in the early eighties composed for quite a few stories, and is one of my all time favourite composer's. Not just in Who, but also for other brilliant tv series, The Changes and The Hitchhiker's Gide to the Galaxy.

Unfortunately, that's an urban myth, as "Mawdryn" doesn't mean anything in Welsh. The closest Welsh might get would be an anagram of "dyn marw" - i.e. "dead man", which is the opposite of what an undead man would be :) It's more likely that, because Peter Grimwade was educated at Truro Cathedral School in Cornwall, he'd have been aware of saint Madryn, and based the name on hers. There are a number of ancient churches in Cornwall associated with St Madryn, including those at Boscastle and Tintagel.

Not quite -- "Mawdryn" is an acronym for "dyn marw," which means "dead man." ETA: Oops, it's an anagram, as pointed out below.

I have a hunch Seska that the senior Lethbridge-Stewarts loss of memory could have been caused by the black guardian himself or even through some illness there is one continuity error in part 2 when the younger Lethbridge-Stewart with his memories still intact says he has witnessed the Doctor regenerate twice oscreen he actually only witnessed one regeneration onscreen from Doctor 3 to Doctor 4 not Doctor 2 to Doctor 3 and also the actor playing Mawdryn is David Collings who was twice in Dr Who before in Revenge of the Cybermen as the villainous Vogan Vorus the fanatic and later as Poul in Robots of Death Poul had robophobia and also David Collings was in other sci-fi series too, I do recommend Seska seeing Blake.s Seven, if you have not already seen it also Sapphire and Steel is worth seeing too .

I know Seska this building used as a school is really a polytechic, in Trent Park London, and also the actor playing the Headmaster Angus Mackay was previously in the 4th Doctor story the Deadly Assassin as the Time Lord Cardinal Borusa and he sadly was not free to reprise the awesome role again for the Invasion of Time and neither did he return for Arc of Infinity Angus Mackay as borusa was awesome in billions of ways and he is the best Borusa ever he played lots of characters like Army officers Salesmen, Vicars and businessmen.

Aww been looking forward to this story, just seeing the brigadier again after so long it makes me happy. Also the black guardian back again from the key to time season. Still the same actor but honestly as much as Valentine Dyall’s performance is great! I don’t really care for the black guardian. But I do quite like this story

This raises the question: To what extent do we invest in the actor, rather than the character. Nicholas Courtney reprises his role as The Brigadier; which is fair and proper because they couldn't get William Russell as Ian Chesterton. BUT, Jacqueline Hill has already come back - as another character. Valentine Dyall (who, as one wag suggested, is permanently grumpy because he has to spend an eternity with a dead crow on his head) returns as The Black Guardian; seen for all of five minutes at the conclusion of 'The Armageddon Factor'. And then we have David Collings, in his third part in the series. And what about Angus Mackay (the headmaster), who was our first incarnation of Cardinal - now President - Borusa? And if you think this means playing a Time Lord offers some kind of immunity to this dilemma, why have they recast the first Doctor on screen but not the second? Should I get out of the house more? The questions...

The original script for this had Ian Chesterton instead of the Brigadier, but William Russell had scheduling conflicts. This makes this the forth Doctor the Brig has appeared with (the fifth for Nicholas Courtney as he was Bret Vyon in the mostly lost story The Dalek Master Plan).

The Black Guardian is one of the Classic villains that I feel that should return. And have a legion of followers that serve to cause chaos. Maybe including the Trickster's Brigade Turlough is a character that I was okay with in the latter episodes he was in but yes he is quite obnoxious and rude. Mawdryn and The Brigadier make this episode work but the story does drag a bit.
