Janet Fielding's performance as possessed Tegan was always my favourite part of the Mara tales, it's a treat when companions get to act evil and you can see how good of an actor they really are. Snakedance rises higher on my favourites list with every watch. Even if I prefer Kinda overall, the Tegan plot, the Manussan lore and world-building, creepy surreal sequences and another set of colourful side-characters make it a worthy serpentine sequel. Also to all the people who didn't spoil that there was a second snake story, you have my eternal thanks because Sesska's genuinely freaked out reaction is brilliant so far.

Yeah, it was a nice surprise to see Clunes show up in vintage Dr. Who stuff that I've never seen. Fun and versatile performer. That's part of the kick for me as someone who's hardly watched any of the old Dr. Who except bits and pieces years ago when reruns broadcast on PBS - seeing familiar British actors pop up here and there, although my familiarity with British actors is pretty hit and miss. I remember as a teenager most of these stories were too ponderously slow or corny or both for me to sit through regularly unless I was too bored to do anything else. I appreciate it a lot more now.

According to Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton hated the outfit she was wearing in this episode, which was dubbed the "Intergalactic Hamburger Waitress Uniform" by the cast and crew.
@jonathanmurphy314120 күн бұрын
Sarah Sutton, in her first time out of her Velvet Traken suit, is very cute, shows her legs -The Doctor does not notice. Back in 1987, at a convention for the PBS station in Cincinnati, OH, Sarah Sutton was the guest, Q&A, and signed photos. I was glad she was there, as one of the Who actress' I had a crush on, when I was then 18. The crossing line patters -the problem. Would have been fine with the blue-stripe blouse, a solid color skirt, even the shorts -yet, it was the 80's.

Re. Nyssa's new look. There was a rumour that Davison's then wife, Sandra Dickinson, on a visit to the set, really hated Sarah's costume and told her as much, really upsetting Sutton, who took against it too, especially the skirt. The main reason for the costume change was the trousers had split on Nyssa's previous Trakenite ensemble. The trousers were always going to be more practical than the puffball/fairy skirt she wore in Keeper of Traken and Logopolis. The look definitely evolved from her rather regal Trakenite original complete with a fur-edged gilet and a rather stately-looking butterfly hair grip.

I've just realised that a skeletal Mara is not only very disturbing, but very possible to do without having to be super realistic! Cunning. This is a gorgeous sequel to Kinda (same writer) which is still not only fascinating in its philosophy and psychology, but a wonderful depiction of a society 500 years after supernatural horror-- there are ancient artifacts but all the contemporary stuff is tatty and cheap (children's snake toys, and the ceremony in the next episode) and the real horror is now looked down upon. Every single character has a specific relationship to the ancient legends, such as the entertainer who drops the pretence as soon as people he respects appear, and Lon's mother who has a quiet feeling for the tuth but pretends not to. And then this random weirdo turns up ranting about how fairy tales are real, and you can immediately see that he won't be listened to, and it's 100% believable why. Tegan's behaviour when possessed is sinister and also deliberately childlike, as if her own identity has retreated into childhood, and Nyssa and the Doctor have their own lovely moments. Love this story. It's definitely not the poor relative of Kinda, it's the next chapter.
@robinstorey206121 күн бұрын
I always preferred Snakedance over Kinda. I loved the world building it managed to achieve. Funnily, a wee while back when you were talking fearfully about 'the story with all the snakes' I assumed you meant this one. When Kinda finished and you thought that was the snake thing all over with, I was thinking "Oh dear".
@invincor20 күн бұрын
You inadvertently stumbled on an old fan myth with your quip that Tegan was listening to “Running Up That Hill” on her headphones. The writer didn’t talk to fan press for many years and in the vacuum a rumor ran wild that Kate Bush wrote the Mara stories under a pen name.

It is funny. A couple of weeks ago you were saying 'Isn't that the 6th Doctor?' This week the unprepared Brit is watching this, going 'Isn't that Martin Clunes (Lon)?' Best known today as a fish-out-of-water General Practitioner in the punningly-entitled 'Doc Martin' (which has featured some familiar faces, like Ian 'Winston Churchill' McNeice and, on one occasion, Sigourney Weaver), my generation probably thinks of him first as 'laddish' Gary Strang in the BBC's hit 1990's sitcom 'Men Behaving Badly' (alongside Neil 'Bob the Builder' Morrissey). And in case you thought we had strayed from the world of Whovianology, this zeitgeist-catching comedy was written by Simon Nye - who later authored 'Amy's Choice'!

Oh, did we neglect to mention there are two snake stories? My goodness, how could we make such an oversight? 😇 This makes me sound cruel, but I love how indignant you got when you realized what was going on with this story. If it's any consolation, there's an element of the next story which I suspect you will find delightful. Lon, the bored character you get such a charge out of, is played by Martin Clunes, who has become a quite well known British television star, this is one of his earliest roles. The owner of the Hall of Mirrors is played by Brian Miller, the real life husband of Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) The reason that Adric, Nyssa and Tegan rarely changed their outfits is because Producer John Nathan Turner wanted to get toy manufacturers interested in producing more Doctor Who merchandise and he thought they were more likely to want to produce Doctor Who action figures if the Doctor and his companions had a single, easily identifiable look. In reality, the companies that make toys based on Doctor Who nowadays love the characters to wear lots of different costumes so they can put out lots more toys, (David Tennant in brown suit, David Tennant in blue suit, with or without overcoat, with or Without glasses, with or without 3-D glasses, David Tennant in spacesuit, David Tennant in tuxedo, etc. As for the merits of Nyssa's costume, I suspect the burgundy pantsuit was warmer when they were filming on location in colder weather. While the new costume, well, it was the 80's.

At the time of filming, both were unknown. Jonathon would appear in the BBC classic serial Beau Geste (produced by Barry Letts) in the autumn of 1982, so would be most famous for that in early 1983 when Snakedance was broadcast. Martin would appear in sitcom No Place Like Home from 1983 until 1986, by which time Jonathon Morris was playing Adrian in Bread. Clunes would go on to appear in things like Jeeves and Wooster and The Harry Enfield Television Programme. It was originally for Enfield that ITV created Men Behaving Badly, which really put Clunes on the map.

As your reaction already suggests, 'Kinda' was enough of a creative success - or oddity, depending on your point of view - for a sequel not to be completely out of the question. And that's notwithstanding the fact that this is the 20th anniversary series; somewhere you might expect to see a returning monster or villain (such as Omega). For my money, however, this is the stronger story. And it's got lovely Brian Miller (or Mr Elizabeth Sladen, if you prefer) in it - 31 years before he turns up as a tramp, accosted by the newly regenerated 12th Doctor and his 'attack eyebrows' in 'Deep Breath'.

How the heck doses Sesskasays have only 103k subscribers? That is pure nonsense, there is no one who reacts better then she does, there are some great runners up but shes Queen of the reactors!! Just being honest.

Have not seen your reactions yet. I usually wait until you have done the whole story. I was wondering if you ever plan on watching the animated versions that have been made of the classic series A lot of the missing stories have made since you started your reactions.I Think you may have watched the reconstructed version of Shada if my memory serves me right?

Janet Fielding is _so_ good in this and Kinda. Actually I think everyone's performances are great in this one, but Janet Fielding just shines so much more than everyone else.

I really do like the Doctor and Nessa as a pair of companions, they just get on so well...TOO well, really. I guess you really do need Teagan there to provide that much needed dramatic conflict...

Jess, are you saying you hope Nyssa changes clothes at some point? 🙂
@robalexander806520 күн бұрын
Jess's first reaction to Nyssa's new outfit was a mixture of bewilderment and bemusement. I caught that she didn't like the costume on a personal level but was happy to roll with it, in a - well, it WAS the 80s - vibe.

Trust the Mara to feature in stories that are almost the only ones to get reactions to the story/serial name in the title sequence alone.
