Classical Ballet or Contemporary… Which is Better?

I like both. I currently only have time for 1.5 hours a week due to my work schedule, so it's 1 hour ballet 4/5, 0.5 hrs pointe. I loved being able to dance more hours a week & include contemporary in there. The worst dissonance was taking an African dance class in college. You don't point your feet in African dance. Ever. So... I had a LOT of trouble with that. 🤣

Personally, I do think there are many shades of dance styles. I like very much the folklore dance parts in classical ballets. And I also like more modern and free choreography still based on classical ballet (even if not so strictly) - such like Cranko's works. And I like to dance on a more contemporary way to classical music. It would be amazing to create a piece including both styles being confronted. Because this was like ballet also started. Such like in la Sylphide, the confrontation between more earthly folklore dance and the magical looking ballet on pointe shoes...

I am a ballet dancer who has yet to to contemporary. I do enjoy watching it, although I dont necessarily see me doing it consistently. The lines and cold technique in ballet calls my heart ❤️

My preference is dancers cross-trained in both. Where does one place Balanchine’s abstract (though Ballenchine didn’t like the expression “abstract” describing his choreography) where does Ballenchine’s choreography belong on the spectrum? … or Maurice Bejart’s choreography? … As always Michael Wise provides a kind, intelligent, thought provoking video. Thank you Michael Wise (I’m certain you know my ballet teachers: Bobby Barnett, Igor Youskevitch, Eugene Slavin, Ruth C. Petrinovic … I was a 6ft2in Male Dancer)
