Much of Northern Soul has similar roots to our Southern US "Beach Music," which has a huge (largely white) following -- especially in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia. The music is uptempo R&B (rooted in the 50s/60s), with a 4/4 shuffle beat of moderate to fast tempo. Many of the same songs are found in Northern Soul. The Beach Music dance evolved from 50s "bop" dancing, with earlier roots in the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug. It's called the Carolina Shag (no relation to the British meaning!)

The policeman in this video is Mark Newman. He has been battling cancer for many years and sadly lost that fight in the early hours of today. Our thoughts are with you always Mark. May you journey on in Peace.

Some quite strong opinions on this thread, what you should all remember is that we (white, black, brown, yellow or whatevever colour you can think of) just love the music and the scene, people's jobs are unimportant, if you like someome you like someone, easy as that. There is so much bs about how you should think nowadays it's brainwashing the working class (by the way, if you go to work you are working class). Keep the faith all soul brothers and sisters.

It would be interesting to see how differant some of these comments would be if the story didn't mention his job? if you can't look past the uniform, maybe you should be taking a harder look at yourselves. Keep up the good work Noggsy, on and off the dance floor!

@t0mme1981 Didn't mean to offend. However, I have since learned that my thoughts are echoed by a number of high profile soul djs, namely, Trevor Nelson, Jazzy B, Nornan Jay etc.. I love soul music of all generations. I was simply stating that this 'northern' soul scene is very insular and very white. The style of dancing is strange and simply does not connect to black music or culture. Take a look at some of the Soul Train vids. You'll clearly see how the dancers move appropriately to the music.

reply to qahtani, dude get to the uk !, i would love people -who were into soul then, to get into it - here and now !,i have wished for years ,that detroit had a rare soul club/all night dance scene -it should have!,i presume [maybe wrongly] that its old news and would'nt draw a crowd, and detroits run down + violent !?,maybe barrack should get into a bit of what we call northern soul. !!, the world would be a better place,he probly is ! PS try soul source web site for worldwide events.b good p

these white folks arent 'square' mate, so he's a copper now well people get old but at the time i bet he was dropping gear like the best of them look at most youth movements that start with raw music; mod, skinhead, soul, they are all white kids dancing and CONNECTING to black music. its not about lack of rythm or soul its just that these blokes dont need some existentialist white bread rock music to get their kicks. we want something to dance to!

How ironic that this video ends with a shot of ballet dancing.Soul music in general is great but I think it's plain to see why this 'northern' soul genre has stayed underground. The style of dance is an odd white manifestation of soul dancing, which appears unnatural and inappropriate.Perhaps this is why you rarely see a black face at 'northern' soul events? What's even stranger...black Americans (even some 60s and 70s soul artists) don't even know what 'northern' soul is.Great music. Odd scene.

@t0mme1981 What is your hang up about your working class status? I certainly see no problem with it.I also have nothing against our white working class traditions. From your northern soul perspective, I just find it strange and extremely odd that a scene which was built largely from 1960s black music has virtually no black participants and adopts a style of dance which has no links to American soul music or black Americans both now or in the 1960s.You can't blame the average person for asking.
