In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm checking in on the ongoing Eurovision 2024 Song Contest. We're listening to one of the leading contenders in this year's contest, Europapa to Joost Klein. His 'ode to Europe' is full of spunk and catchy hooks, and I really enjoyed the tune (and its message). Come along for a fun ride!

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art. The lyrics have a lot of layers: Europe let’s come together! It’s now or never! I love you all! Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Visit my friends in France Or take a long walk to Vienna I want to leave the Netherlands But my passport is gone Fortunately don't need a visa To be with you So take the bus to Poland Or the train to Berlin I have no money for Paris So use my imagination Do you have a euro please Say "merci" and "please" I lost everything Except time So am travelling every day For the world is mine Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Ich bin in Deutschland Aber Ich bin so allein Io sono in Italia but still I feel pain Am running from myself Calling for "help!" all day long Yes I even give people money But there is no one to help me I don't need es-car-gots Don't need fish 'n chips Don't need paella, no I don't even really know what that is Turn on the radio I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai" Won't stop until they say "Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!" Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa…. Welcome in Europe boy! At the end of the day We are all human beings My father once told me It's a world without borders I miss you every day Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you

Wow...a lot of Joost haters in the comments, which is so weird to me. People don't have to like the song, but Joost is a lovely person with a beautiful soul. Some people really should be a bit more respectful, cause their comments say more about them then they do about Joost. Kinda ashamed of my fellow Dutchies in these comments.

This song has many layers. It sounds fun and all. But he's singing about traveling to run from his grief, which he can't. He's in Germany, but still alone. He's in Italy, but it still hurts. He's trying to get help but nobody helps him (he has another song about listening to "queue music" on the phone while trying to reach therapists and such). He used to watch Eurovision with his parents (they both died when he was young) and promised them he'd be up on that stage once. And here he is. There's a lot more you can read into the lyrics (Wenen is Vienna in Dutch, but wenen means crying too). It's not my type of music but I love how he uses a fun tune like this while expressing sadness and pain underneath. Edited to add: this music style, like it or not, is part of the Dutch culture just like polders and windmills are.

For those who think internationalism will destroy local culture: I love how this song is at the same time extremely European and extremely Dutch. Traditional Dutch windmills and landscape, modern Dutch happy hardcore, sung in the native language. Let’s celebrate unity with differences. Apart from that, happy hardcore with a serious undertone of sorrow. Also like the fact he stays close to himself by taking his ‘forever team’ instead of opting for some experienced ‘Eurovision experts’.

From my country! His motto and name of his latest album is: Joost Klein, Droom Groot! Translated that would be: Joost Small, Dream Big! (Klein/Small is his last name). He entered on number 1 in the Dutch charts. This dude is a whole vibe. The combination of 90's dance beats (gabber/happy hardcore), rap, art and his personality is the golden formula of his success. He designed those jackets with the shoulders himself. And there's often someone on stage making a painting during his concerts. I'm rooting as hard as I can for Joost. He deserves it!

Joost is smart and a creative man, and a real party animal, a joy to watch. (Memento mori, carpe diem!) We are very curious how he will present himself at the stage in Malmö live at Eurovision in may. Greetings from the Netherlands.

@@paraskevasparaskevas350 me too, I mean some of it is retracted haha to not raise expectations, but it was compared to the moon landing… to something physically impossible. He is knows to use the moshpin, that circle it used to be Togo in the punk time. Now it’s a circle in which he is right in the middle. Kind of of more compact organized chaos. So I mean I’m not that creative, but I assume they are going to sort of recreate it.. maybe on top of the public, or maybe it’s possible with VR, and lighting? We will see, he is a good performer

I was a bit surprised when you mentioned that 7 people were credited, so I had a look at them. First of all, it's actually 6 different people because tantu beats is the alias of Teun de Kruif, an easy mistake if you don't know that. He is a producer that Joost has worked with for a long time, for example his last album and his hit song friesenjung. Tim Haars is the person how says welcome to europe before the dance break. He is an actor and the creator of a show called new kids that features a lot of 90's dance music. He did multiple different takes as the character he usually plays and they finally settled on the one sentence used in the song. Paul Elstak is a pioneer and one of the founders of this type of music. In an interview he said they came to him with a finished song and asked him to fine-tune the dance break to make it sound more as an authentic 90s song. Maradonie is a dutch rapper and you can see him sitting next to Joost in the last supper scene. They are close friends and according to Joost the call each other almost everyday. When they are creating music the often spitball and Joost confirmed that at least the line "neem de benen naar Wenen" was thought up by Donnie. Thijmen Melissant I hadn't heard of before, but I found a small interview with him online. Apparently he won a sample contest organized Tantu beats a couple of years ago, so that's how they now each other. Tantu beats apparently created a plug in for this song and asked him for some inspiration. That let to the melody in the chorus and the verse. Still a lot of contributions by other people, but I think it's also because Joost is honest and easily gives credit to people that help him. I don't think a lot of other artist would have given a writers credit for the welcome to Europe line for example.

Performing has been Joost his therapy. He got kinda lost in dealing with the trauma of using his dad to cancer at age 12 and finding his mother on the couch being succombed to heart failure a year later. His road to healing has so far been very bumpy and his KZbin channel (from age 10) and later his music are part of this. In this song he mentions both the drive to explore the world and enjoy life, like his parents encouraged him to, but he also mentions the bumpy road to deal with the grief.. With this song he also wants to burn his past of grief and mourning, and maybe his tendency to identify himself too much with this grief, and start living embracing the good memories. He apparently succeeds with his bare honesty in utter vulnerability to touch many people, who can relate, as they have parents and children and feel supported in their struggle with their own demons (or maybe in their worries with all the current existential threats many are confronted with, like viruses, environment, (looming) wars). This may explain the enormous amount of people that otherwise loath this style of music who love this song and Joost. As suggested his complete Lowlands 23 festival performance is basically an elongated version of this song. It is also way more intense in both the exuberant parts as in the very touching final (Florida 2009 supported by his soul mate watching his side). A rollercoaster of emotions, truly shared between Joost and his complete audience (as opposed to anyone feeling he commercially exploiters his past). The fascinating part is that many people of all walks of life already are actually caught of guard and experience strong emotions by the unexpected ending after being carried to a happy place just before, just by this song, seemingly with a very simple fabric and very superficial lyrics.

@@aartsipman6854 You're right. I read some of the dismissive comments seemingly based on technical skills required to play/sing this. Very true, but IMO completely missing the point. This is what I want to convey. This is not claiming to be a muscial master piece of a great singer. It is just somebody expressing himself to others with perceived utter honesty and autheticity, and apparently many people connect to these emotional struggles. What fascinates me is that even this ESC song, which is a kind of a watered down summary of his regular much more intense performances, apparently is still capable of conveying this rollercoaster of universal emotions in quite some listeners, who do not know the back story. Which is what defines art? I personally do not care whether he wins USC or not. I just hope it helps him dealing with his demons and perhaps one or two more people (maybe me, or you?) Edit: It also struck me that for many (young?) people this also seems to hit a nerve along the lines of a quote from another reaction below, especially as the song is very much about embracing life in spite of your demons/worries: "...In these dark times, Europapa is the only song that gives me good vibes, makes me feel happy and wanting to party and feel united..."

some context behind the text of the song both of joost klein's parents died when he was very young. so the song talks about him traveling trough europe but he can never fully hide the pain of losing his parents the end with the fire is basically a message of closure, he's telling his dad he's ready to move on from his sadness and is ready to move onto the next chapter in his life this is also partially because he once made a promise to his dad that he would sing at the eurovision song contest, the promise he now made true its also the reason behind the title, europapa being a wordplay on europa and papa, the dutch words for europe and dad

Why I think Europapa is a masterpiece? Knowing his background stories (lost both parents at a very young age, got depressed and dedicated this song to his father) and being a Dutch native speaker myself, I thought, why not translate Europapa, explaining the deeper meaning of the song (its my personal take on the song and not verified of course (only Joost knows) but I think it makes a lot of sense. Have a read: --> Welkom in Europa, blijf hier tot ik dood ga (Welcome in Europe, I'll stay here till I die) Welcome in a world without borders, without constraints. I will never let myself be constricted. --> Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa (Euro-dad-dy, Euro-dad-dy) --> Bezoek m'n friends in France (I visit my friends in France) 'Friends' translated in France is 'Amis' Amis was author of e.g. 'Invasion of the Space Invaders' and 'Money'. Joost didn't visited friends in a country, he identified himself with characters in books. --> Of neem de benen naar Wenen. (or take a walk to Vienna) In Dutch 'de benen nemen' has two meanings. Litterary is means 'to walk', but figuratively it means 'running away' Same counts for 'Wenen'. Translated to English can mean 'the capital of Austria 'Vienna' but can also be translated to 'crying'. So, it can mean 'walk to Vienna' or 'running away to despair' --> Ik wil weg uit Netherlands, maar m'n paspoort is verdwenen (I want to leave the Netherlands, but my passport is gone) I want to run away from my childhood, run away from my pain, but I lost my identity. I don't know who I am anymore, I'm lost. --> Heb gelukkig geen visum nodig om bij je te zijn (I don't need a visa to be with you) There's is nothing what can stop me to be with you, you are in my heart. --> Dus neem de bus naar Polen (So I take the bus to Poland) Besides transportation, a bus is also a conductor. Polen, in Dutch, is the plural of pool. In English poles. So magnetism. With a balance of positive and negative ends. --> of de trein naar Berlijn (or the train to Berlin) First; the Berlin Wall was the symbol of the Cold War and a divided Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolizes the start of a united Europe. Second; the track 'Friesenjung' of Joost Klein is co-written by his friend, the Berlin rapper Ski Aggu. --> Ik heb geen geld voor Paris, dus gebruik m'n fantasie (I don't have money for Paris, so I use my imagination) Paris is the city of love. But there's no currency in the world that can buy his father back. He only can use his imagination to be reunited with his father --> Heb je een еuro'tje, please? Zеg "merci" en "alsjeblieft" (can you spare a euro, please? Say "merci" en "here you are") Can I have a bit of your wealth, please? In return I will share a bit of my love with you. --> Ik ben echt alles kwijt behalve de tijd (I lost everything, except the time) I lost everything what's important to me (his parents) the only thing that remains is the time he has left in his life, without his father a burden. --> Dus ben elke dag op reis want de wereld is van mij (So I'm travelling every day because the world is mine) He's running, searching, trying to find something. Every day over and over and again in a world where he feels lonely. --> Ich bin in Deutschland, aber ich bin so allein (I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone) The track 'Friesenjung' was a huge hit in Germany. He made it in Germany, but he can't share his successes with the one who is most inportant to him. --> Io sono in Italia, maar toch doet het pijn (I'm in Italy, but it hurts) In his track 'Ome Robert' Joost sings (well actually screams), 'Who are you? I'm a god!'. But even the gods of the Roman empire are not enough to soothen the pain. --> Ben aan het vluchten van mezelf, roep de hele dag om help (I'm running away from myself, call for help the whole day) I don't want to be the person as I am today, don't want to feel the pain anymore. But I can't do this on my own. I need help. Perhaps he asks his dad for help but realizes he is on his own. --> Ja, ik geef zelfs mensen geld, maar d'r is niemand die me helpt (Yes, I even give money to people and organizations, but there's nobody who helps) I need help and I'm willing to share everything I have, but nobody understands my pain, not even the organizations who should have taken care of me. I feel alone and lonely. --> Ik hoef geen escargots, hoef geen fish 'n' chips Hoef geen paella, no, ik weet niet eens echt wat dat is (I don't need escargots, don't need fish 'n' chips. Don't need paella, no, I'm not even sure what it is) I'm not interested in luxury, not interested in traditions, not interested in exotic places. --> Zet de radio aan, ik hoor Stromae met "Papaoutai" (turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai") I tune in and hear someone in a similiar situation (Stromae lost his father as well) echoing my thoughts ('Papaoutai' means 'Daddy, where are you?') --> Zal niet stoppen, tot ze zeggen: "Ja, ja, dat doet 'ie goed, ey" (Will not stop until they say: "yeah, yeah, he doing a great job, ey") I'm a insecure and will not stop until I got the confirmation that I'm on the right track. That I'm doing a good job. A tab on the shoulder will do. ------------------------------------ And there you have it. Europapa is a masterpiece....

Thank you for your good reaction. THE NETHERLANDS the Winner for me. The no1. I listened 1 time to the other songs, but I've listened more than 100 times to Europapa. Dance, hakken, party and end crying. In these dark times, Europapa is the only song that gives me good vibes, makes me feel happy and wanting to party and feel united. The song is not a joke. It's a sad letter to his dad, who passed away when he was 12 years, and his mother who died 1 year later when was 13. Sad lyrics in a happy hardcore melody of the 90's, originated in The Netherlands. His dad worked as a volunteer with refugees and told Joost that the world has no grenzen=boundaries=limitations. Boundaries are invented by humans. Go and travel and discover Europe and the world. They used to watch Eurovision together. Joost did write poems and he promised his father that one day he will be performing in Eurovision Songcontest. He suffered from depression that's why he sings that he paid money (for therapy) but nobody could help him. He went to many countries in Europe and tried their best traditional food, but even then he still feeled alone and in pain of no having his parents. He mentioned Stromae with his song Papaoutai, which means 'Dad where are you' in France. At the end he burns the picture and the house where he grew up, to end the painful past and to start a new beginning.

The fire at the end doesn't mean that the real Europe is burning, but like the family picture burning, its the European family house (you see that in this house lived Joost, a kid representing Joost as a kid and an elder representing his father) that is burning. Joost said in an interview that sometime things in your live disappear and he wanted to show this that way and they choose burning, because other effects like flooding wouldn't have the same visual impact.

It's worth noting that "world without borders" is an accurate but incomplete translation, Because it also translates to "world without limitations". Because the word he uses is basically the word "limit" Rather than being about literal "country limits" In this context it is implied to mean "with endless possibilities"

Next to his personal journey of grief and dealing with it, the song's second biggest layer is recognizing the trouble Europe is in right now and we need to stand together to overcome the threats we face.

The style certainly is a throwback to the nineties when I was a teenager. I wasn't in that scene, like 'gabbers' but the music was all over the place. I've always been a geek and a nerd. ;)

Hah, cool surprise that you're following these too. Eurovision is kind of its own genre cause in a competition like that, the most important thing is to be memorable and distinquishable, so it's sometimes more of a carnival than serious music, but still fun stuff once a year. I'd checkout Switzerland's entry, I think they got a cool pop-musical-hollywood-rap-opera-fusion going on this year.

Since you're into the actual music itself I want to point out that this song has the exact chord progression as Sting's Gentleman in New York. And that's not weird since Joost's previous big hit "Friesenjung" used that song's chorus remade.

This song has so many messages, it's absolute poetry avant garde. First and formost the tribute and promise Joost is giving to his late dad who taught him about being in the European Union. Free movement, no travel restrictions, no internal borders. But there is also the ode to Europe and counternarrative to the nationalistic, closed borders mindset that currently is getting real traction in many many countries. (Not only Europe) I am an 80's kid and i vividly remember the berlin wall present, the pressure of the cold war every day... The european union (or its formal predecessor) has been instrumental in creating the (economic) powerhouse and stability to handle the rapid collapse of the warsaw pact. And look at it now, europe is reinforced by the baltics, poland ect all without internal borders and travel restrictions. Never tear that freedom down.

This reaction is everything, you have it all right. As someone who knows music in a professional way it is great to see that you appreciate the song. Keep up the good work and greetings from Holland. If you are done with the Eurovision songs I would like to recommend another great Dutch artist; Davina Michelle. And the best introduction I can think of would be one of her originals: Davina Michelle - Liar - live from the Van Nelle factory. Im pretty sure you will be amazed and would instantly want to find out more about her. She is a Dutch gem for sure. Please do watch. Once again, keep up the good work and I will be looking forward to your reaction to Davina 🇳🇱

As a Dutchman I have to honestly say this is not my favorite submission for the songfestival. But if I look past the music style which is just outt of my comfort zone, the song has it's merits. It's goofy but also has a bit of serious undertone. It's a song that tries to bring people together which is direly needed. I don't think we will win, but Top 5 seems achievable. Plus you don't want to win too often, it's expensive to host the songfestival (we won 5 years ago which was actually the first time during my lifetime, previous win was 1975... I'm a tiny bit younger 🤣).

It's nice when people from all over the place can get together and get along and enjoy cool music. But, not so nice when people don't get along, which is obviously the case at a few places in the world at the moment. The atmosphere here in Sweden, and especially in Malmö, is a bit tense during the planning for the Eurovision event. The Swedish police has requested support from the Danish and the Norwegian police during the event.

Please, would you react please PLEASE to the studio version of Emotion Sickness by Silverchair? 🙏 and then, if you don't mind, choose anything from their Diorama album? I suggest Tuna in the brine, Without you, The greatest view, Across the night, World upon your shoulders,or that live version of After all these years in Newcastle, 2003 (from their Live from Faraway Stables DVD), but whatever you choose would be great really. Thanks, hope you enjoy their music.
