In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Fool's Overture. The song was written by Roger Hodgson and first included as the final track on Supertramp's 1977 album Even in the Quietest Moments. The live version we're listening to today is a performance with a full orchestra from 2004 with Roger at the piano and on lead vocals. I very much enjoyed this tune!

You heard them, Doug. The album Crime of The Century has everything. You can't pick a song off it. Having said that, the ones you could best get your teeth into for analysis are probably the title track and Rudi. But that would leave out sumptuous tracks like Hide in Your Shell and Asylum. Hell, just do the whole album!

Mr. Roger Hodgson came to Bolivia in 1997 i guess. I went to his concert, of course. He had a huge problem, half of his equipment flew to Cochabamba (his concert was scheduled in Santa Cruz that night) so he apologized and promised to do the best of himself. We had an extraordinary concert with his half band. After the concert, i stood out of outside waiting for him. I had the chance of meeting him. He asked me "how did you like the concert"?. I kissed his hands and i told him: Perfect Mr. Hodgson, perfect. Thanks in deed. What a great experience!!

Age 62, been a massive Supertramp fan since the release of Crime if the Century. The underrated reference is that they didnt have the same level of profile as some of their peers. Specifically in reference to Fools Overture, its a fantastic song, but how many people outside of the Supertramp following have heard of it. Supertramp are underrated compared to Pink Floyd etc.

Supertramp is without a doubt one of the most underrated bands of all-time. I was lucky enough to see them live four times, including Rodger Hodgson's last show with the band.

And this is when he’s much older. For him to be able to pull this off is quite impressive. An absolute legend. Just a little bit of trivia. Supertramp were huge here in Montreal before they really made it big anywhere else. For some reason, they just clicked and the people here just took to them. They were playing sold out shows here before anywhere else. It’s the same with Styx and Genesis. Rodger and Dennis De Young from Styx and Chris DeBurgh were very good friends with the long time morning DJ from CHOM the classic Rock station. I grew up hearing them call in for years and years and they would talk music. Montreal has always had a love affair with the Prog Rock legends.

The first time I saw Supertramp in concert was at the Montreal Forum, I think it was in 1978... Guess who was playing as the crowd warmer group? It was Chris De Burgh and he gave us an amazing concert! Supertramp even asked him to come on stage and sing with the band for "Hide in your shell" during the encore!

@@andrepepin9792 Friends of mine were at that concert. Then they made me discover Supertramp and Chris De Burgh. "Faut que t'écoute ça, man!" they said. ("You have to hear that, man!"). Since then I am a fan of "Fool's Overture" and of "Spanish Train". I saw Supertramp in concert at Montréal Parc Jarry the next year, and Chris De Burgh at le Vieux Port de Québec in the mid 90's.

The conductor is Robert Groslot from Belgium. He's also an accomplished pianist, he was sixth laureate in the International Queen Elisabeth Competition for piano in 1978. He's also a composer in his own right. He's been conducting the Night of the Proms for many years.

In 1940 when Churchill gave that speech, stuff was NOT "about to go down." England declared war on Nazi Germany in 1939. They were already in the thick of it, hence the speech. As others have already stated, "Jerusalem" from Blake's poem, is practically the national anthem of England.

A lot of souvenirs : in a small town in France 35 years ago, my dad used to put this song before the Saturday dinner. This song accompanied me during most of my 43 years of existence. My dad has gone 20 years ago and now it is my turn to put music for my children before eating during the weekend. Our family moment when we listen to different type of music together. Thank you for this back in time moment and all the memories. Music can bring you strongly in the past. I really appreciate your work.

Roger wrote the soundtrack of my childhood ...I discovered him at like age 9 and never stopped listening ...I have been lucky enough to catch him twice ... Even scored a set list in my city . No other singer performer has touched me more than his artful thoughtful music. Forever greatful to him . I took him across Canada with me in 86' shared him with others along the way . BTW the guy they cut to singing backup is THE LATE John Miles who has worked A LOT with Alan Parsons, and has an album called REBEL, with an ASTOUNDING SONG called MUSIC. Night at the proms is an annual event in Brussels, with lots of different artists. RIP JOHN

They are singing "Jerusalem" a hymn based on a Blake text that suggests John The Baptist traveled to England (Glastonbury) The artwork for the album featured a piano with some music on it called Fools Overture. If you look close, the notes on the music are actually "The Star Spangled Banner"

I've always thought the "boats put out to sea" bit was about Dunkirk. (300,000+ allied troops were evacuated from the beach under heavy German fire). Fits in with Churchill's speech.

I saw Supertramp in concert a few times. At those times many big bands would go through Vancouver, but very few of them had decent sound systems, Supertramp was one of them (as well as Yes and Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and David Bowie; all bands that were dramatic and fussy with their sounds). In these concerts you not only heard the music clearly, but you also felt the music in your body, and finally trip you off in mind-space. I love this song. So excited you reviewed it. Thank you.

Can't add any more kudos for this song. Among the best from the 70's. I agree that Crime of the Century is their masterpiece album, but this song is their masterpiece song. My first date with my wife-to-be in 1976 was a Supertramp concert, one of the best shows in my 50 years of concerts. We still go to see Roger when he tours every fall at Casino Rama in Ontario.

I think the fool is a reference to Churchill, who was thought a fool "by the important people" until he was needed in crisis... Then he was discarded again when he ended the crisis. I spent much time listening through headphones to the studio LP

So... you're really a surprising reactor. I *never* expected *anyone* to react to Fool's Overture. It is a (one of many) favorite of mine from Supertramp. Beautiful and melodic, but never boring. Oh, yeah, I don't know anything about music apart from listening and loving what I love. It's just that most of my favorites don't seem to go well with most people. You explain a lot that goes right over my head, but my takeaway from it is that the piece is special and different and thus... perhaps... harder to enjoy for the general public. I don't know. I've only heard two reactions from you so far - both pieces that I love - and which you seemingly enjoy as well. At least you do a great job at describing what makes them different and stand out. I guess you've got a lot of fans that suggests really great music due to that. Can't wait to familiarize myself more to your reactions and get to know pearls of music that I've never heard before! I love Fool's Overture. Its my favourite song that isn't on Crime of the Century. I've never heard this version before, and it was really good when you consider the age that they're at in this video, and how they're still able to pull that off. Mindblowing. However, i still think the studio version is slightly better. Now, Mr Doug. If you liked this, i highly suggest you check out the entirety of the Crime of the Century album. A complete Roger Hodgson masterpiece. My dad always used to play Supertramp when i was younger, and i fell in love with their music. Crime of the Century, to this day, is still my favourite album. I had the pleasure of meeting Roger in late 1983, backstage, after a Supertramp concert in San Diego. It was his last tour with the group. What a generous, friendly, and fascinating man. He spoke briefly of his future. He mentioned that he was working on his first solo album that would come out in 1984. What a pleasure.
