In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm reacting to All Nightmare Long by Metallica. This is part of our 'scary week' to celebrate Halloween, and this song definitely got us off on the right track. Even though this one came out in 2008, it reminded me quite a lot of their early thrash sounds. Check this one out...if you dare!

My fav Metallica song. Its always seemed to me the first verse is clearly a reference to the bus crash that took Cliff, and possibly recurring nightmares about it. "Crawl from the wreckage one more time Horrific memory twists the mind Dark, rutted, cold and hard to turn Path of destruction, feel and burn Still life, incarnation Still life, infamy Hallucination, heresy Still, you run, what's to come? I actually got to meet and chat to the Mix engineer for this album, Andrew Scheps. I asked about this album and he said that they had many meetings with the band about the production and overall sound of the album. The mission statement of the band was for the album to brash, loud and heavy through every single speaker. Be it the not so great 2008 speakers in laptops, car radios or huge PA systems. It was to sound "loud" even at quiet volumes. That is the reason *why* the album sound so harsh and dry to most people. Historically, this was sort of the peak of the Loudness Wars in terms of metal production. Whether its aged well or not is in the eye of the beholder, but that just some insight into *why* this album sounds the way it does.

@wintyrqueen 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, he’s mentioned a few times that “of course” he brought them mixes that weren’t so brick wall limited, but in the end the client has the final say, & they went with what they went with
@maxhowlett9661
@maxhowlett9661 3 ай бұрын
@wintyrqueen Indeed. The band have a pretty spotty track record when it come to their involvement with the shaping the sound of an album. Justice being 90% treble, St Anger sounding like Dirt and Death Magnetic being put through the sausage factory are all (at least partly) the result of James and Lars having probably too much say and control over something that don't know that much about.
@wintyrqueen
@wintyrqueen 3 ай бұрын
@@maxhowlett9661Yep. The weird thing is that they don’t seem to have the same issue live. Lars has a normal snare sound when touring St. Anger, Cliff & Jason’s bass were always huge at live shows. There’s a reason Bob Rock told them before the Black album that they’d never captured what they did live on a record
@maxhowlett9661
@maxhowlett9661 3 ай бұрын
@wintyrqueen Yep! Rock was a brilliant producer in that he stood his ground in his decisions and forced the band into "doing their homework". It seems in their old age, they're much more willing and trusting to just let Greg Fidelman do his thing and are very happy with the result. Sure the last 2 records AND their live sound have sounded kinda samey, but it's a pretty mighty and punchy sound so.... "If it ain't broke"

This song is probably one of my favorite modern Metallica cuts. The lyrical content of this song is about Robert Belknap Long's Hounds of Tindalos which are part of the Cthulhu mythos. The Hounds are known to chase human quarry throughout the angles of time without mercy nor letting up. As an aside, this song was floated around as a demo since the St. Anger days, known as 'Flamingo.' Interestingly enough, while the lyrics of 'All Nightmare Long' is about hunters chasing prey, the lyrics to 'Flamingo' can be seen as the inverse to a degree, where they take on a more self destructive point of view where the song's protagonist relishes in their near misses with death.

Name is flamingo because it revolves around a flamenco riff that Trujillo plays on a classic guitar as a finger exercise. Here the video of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/monGqYV8ZsRnfqMsi=91VuW5ANguo2-0Os

I was a huge metallica fan in the 80s and 90s, the black album killed it for me. I kept trying but it wasn't doing it. I gave up. Completely stopped paying attention to them at all, didn't hear the music. St anger or whatever. Years later I was driving through orlando listening to whatever sirius xm metal channel and this song came on. It's got a long intro, no vocals for a while. From the very first notes I was all perked up. "This sounds like old metallica! can't...be.... what the hell is this?!" I was perplexed. Then the vocals came in and I realized it was *actually metallica* and I just lit up with elation, and the whole song played out and it was fantastic. THEY'RE BACK. I can't properly convey how amazing that moment was. This album rules.

The mixing on this album will forever be unforgivable because of that. It's absurd how often Rubin kills the dynamic range of albums he produces. This isn't me comparing the music of Metallica and Megadeth, but listen to how much better the dynamics are on United Abominations from the year before Death Magnetic and you can see how squeezed and clipped Death Magnetic sounds in comparison. The recording itself is clipping from added studio gain.

A lot of folks will just never leave the 80’s no matter what. I admit, I wasn’t always sold on new sounds by heavy bands. It was ultimately Dream Theater that taught me to judge slowly. Sometimes, if you just give something a chance, you may not only find it grows on you but also becomes among your favorites. And that just opened the floodgates for me. Starting with this Album, I really thought Metallica started finding a great groove somewhere in between the Cliff and Jason eras. Rob is a different kind of animal on bass and brings much of that early energy back. These last 3 albums have been a blast! Some people still have their heads stuck too far up their own keisters to hear it though. Their loss!

I love the Music Video for this song. It's pretty creative and you can tell Kirk Hammett had a huge hand in the animated parts of the video.

I remember playing the entire album on Guitar Hero on the easy level, just to get the master recording. 🙂

Hi Doug! back in my preteens I used to get repetitive dreams of being followed by something. But these dreams could become lucid and I would be able to take control of the next stage of the dream. After many such episodes with a little progress in each I was able to triumph over whatever (?) the something was. Lucid dreaming is Ace! Keep Reacting!

I listen to this song every time I was getting ready to leave on OP’s during development. Also the day that never comes.

I always felt because of the chorus that this music is about modern warfare, like how machines mercilessly trace, kill

the origin of this song came from a riff the bass player, Rob Trujillo came up while jamming on a classical guitar in the studio. the riff caught james attention which they dubbed "Roam 2" and they built an entire song around it. you should try digging in to the Load era... lots of unexpected goodies on there. Until It Sleeps, Hero of the Day, Bleeding Me, Outlaw torn. Both Until It Sleeps and Hero of The Day are must watch Videos btw. cannot skip those even if you have to blur them out

I really like this album and feel a lot of the time it's underrated or forgotten about. To me anyways, the whole album is really solid. The first time I heard it I said it sounded a lot like they'd gone more back to their thrash roots with this one. The Day That Never Comes is a pretty good version of a power ballad as well
