I envy anyone who listens to this for the first time. Also, every song on this album is about something that controls you. Battery is about their fans, Master of Puppets is about drugs, Disposable Heroes is about military soldiers, Leper Messiah is about religion, etc. The whole album is a masterpiece, musically and lyrically.

This song is about drug addiction The drug is the master and the puppets are the addicts The first segment is and argument between the drug and the addict The drug wins the argument and the middle section is the euphoria because the addict gave in Then it changes in the end to the drug calling again Great song I hope I helped you understand what it’s about Take care😊

I’ve always said Metallica is better live than in studio. I love the way they improvise in their live shows. I was 16 years old when Master of Puppets hit and their tour came to my little town of Tulsa Oklahoma back in 92. My first job at 16 was working concessions at our local amusement park and it was located on the fairgrounds. Metallica came to Tulsa with Guns and Roses. I’m a preachers kid so I had to sneak around to listen to my favorite bands. So the night of the concert I told my folks I was working that night but really going to the concert. 2 hours before gates opened Axl Rose decided he didn’t want to play that night so the entire show was cancelled. Metallica blew up and we didn’t have a venue big enough to get Metallica to come. Fast forward to 2019 they finally had a venue here they’d play and my wife got me tickets as a birthday gift. I finally after 30 years got to see them and it was everything I could’ve hoped for. They are also the ONLY bad in existence that has played on all 7 continents. No other band has!

Excellent selection, there are many live versions of this song, for me this one was the best, because I was in there for the whole show--watch seek & destroy from the same Québec show to see how they interact in a funny way with the crowd. I went to Metallica shows 5 times between 1985 & 2023. To answer your question, it was for the album death magnetic tour (in 2008 or 2009). the crowd is loud, because 2 weeks before this show, Metallica announced that it would be filmed & released on DVD after the tour, so the crowd was ready to be part of it. Have a nice day. btw, when going to a Metallica show, the band expect the crowd to sing loud, make noise and have fun. They often yell at the crowd if they don't give the band what they want.

ya it kind of bums me when people react to this first. Hetfield's vocals just weren't what they used to be by this point. Frankly I don't even know why people insist on reacting to the live version of songs first in general, especially Metallica who have been pretty hit or miss live post TBA tour. I get that live performances are more raw, but it's probably way better if you are actually there in person. The appeal of a live show to me is when YOU actually see it live, not just watching a recording.

In the spring of 1986 at the age of 11 I was introduced to Master of Puppets by my 12 year old cousin at a sleepover, this was the third album he "borrowed" from his older brother Kill em all in 83 Ride the Lightning in 84, so I was already a veteran Metallica fan, but Master of Puppets was such a powerful album They attract the attention of and would open for Ozzy " their last tour as an opening act", Metallica has since grown to the biggest band in Hard Rock / Heavy Metal. for me it's been a 41 year ride some jumped off, others joined the party late. we welcome new comers to the Metal Melitia. " the original name of the Metallica Fan Club" also a song from Kill Em All . I hope you grow to become one of us. Hey Stacey.. I love how you're into the music and the energy at these live performances. I've been a fan of Metallica since around 1987. Do give the lyrics an investigation. As much as you're enjoying the music and energy, once you understand the lyrics, you'll be even more blown away. For example. Master Of Puppets is a song about drugs, from the drugs perspective. The song talks about how the Drug is controlling the person. The drug is the Master Of Puppets. "Master of puppets I'm pulling your strings.... twisting your mind and smashing your dreams..... Blinded by me you can't see a thing...... Just call my name and I'll hear you scream... " That is the drug calling out to the user.. The breakdown of guitars in Harmony, was to show the elation of the user getting the "high" by using. Then it crashes down again.. Again, awesome reaction, but do check out the lyrics.. A whole story was told here. Keep up this Metallica Rabbit Hole! I love it!

If you want to truly be moved by a Metallica song, I recommend listening/reacting to their official song/video titled "One." It's an anti-war song/video, and it shows you how deep their songs can be. Many people cry watching the video, and it really shows their artistry in making videos as well. The video is intermixed with footage from an old movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" (I think that's the name). It's a masterpiece.

LOVE YOUR REACTIONS! BUT... When it comes to metal, I would suggest that you take the studio versions before the live versions. There's TONS of Metallica live videos on youtube, and from almost every year - almost all their songs, so that will not be your problem. By the way, this live version is what you would call "new-ish" - you can find plenty of live versions of this song, all the way back to 1986. PS. The drummer is Lars from Denmark (like me).
