#PatMethenyGroup #Minuano #PatMethenyReaction
In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm welcoming DJ Rae back to the channel for another fun reaction video where we listen to music from the Pat Metheny Group for the first time on the channel. This song, Minuano (Six Eight), is from their album Still Life (Talking), released in 1987. I very much enjoyed listening to Pat's sublime music! And, I'm really enjoying this dynamic where I'm new to the song but my guest knows it very well. I hope you enjoy!

As wonderful as Pat Metheny is -- and he is -- let us not forget the late, great Lyle Mays who co-wrote the piece and was Pat's right hand for many, many years.

Thanks for the "shout-out" to Lyle, Pat's equal partner in exquisite pastel. Have y'all here experienced his piece "Eberhard"? Although it was composed about a decade prior, it was the last thing he recorded before his unfortunate death in '20. I consider it a true masterpiece, on par with the incredible Minuano (Six Eight), thanks to @Doug.Helvering. It, together with several PMG selections and J.S. Bach's and a few others, moves me greatly (even though I've haven't the musical theory to comprehend it). Do listen if you haven't yet! 🙏🏼

Rae has the mood of the piece nailed: Joy. Optimism. The wind at one's back. From the dark full into the warm sunlight of morning. Buckle up, Doug, and get out your jazz harmony books. And Rae is just like "I need a cigarette!" The great thing about Pat Metheny is that he's an old school jazzer who loves -- as he says -- "open G chords." He and Lyle were such a magical pairing of musical minds. I'm just glad they left behind so much great art.

Can’t believe this is Doug’s first listen! I share Rae’s enthusiasm for Minuano and enjoyed watching her anticipate what lies around each bend in the road of this song. Nostalgia? Sure. Joy? Yes, but more than that. There are a number of PMG songs I find so moving I can’t get through without welling up. Every time. This is one. Unfortunately it’s a bit awkward enjoying it (them) with others around…particularly those who don’t (and…let’s face it…never will) share my appreciation. The albums First Circle and Letter From Home also have songs that elicit the same response. I’d’ve been a mess in this video…blubbering in my Blueberry Belch

This was my first Pat Metheny song too. It took about thirty seconds and I haven’t been the same since. And that was like 1989. It instantly spoke to my soul and filled a void I didn’t know existed. It took a while for me to get to enjoying where the beat and melody drops in because I was floating on a cloud in that intro for days. Over and over in the fetal position on the floor. I miss his Brazillian side.

20-something Grammys, buttloads of top jazz guitarist awards, excellent composer, always pushing himself in his craft....and one of my top 5 guitarists of all time. And "Are You Going With Me" has my favorite Metheny solo.....the live one with Anna Maria Jopek on vocals is just killer.

oh, man. I think this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written/performed. Saw them on tour when Pedro Aznar has rejoined the band, it was the best all around concert I ever saw. Maybe along with the CSO, anyways. That keyboard lick at the end of the breakdown... Lyle killed that every single time. You could check out the live version of Phase Dance or Song for Bilbao from Travels. They were an a m a z i n g band live.

This was the first of Pat's so called "Brazilian period," when he was heavily influenced by Brazilian music. Also, the "string pop" right before Pat's entrance was his signal to the recording engineer that he was about to start playing. He said during an interview that he normally edits it out, but he liked it on this particular song, and decided to leave it in.

Thank you DD and DJ Rae for choosing one of my FAVORITE PMG tracks of all time! I have seen Pat 6 times in my life starting with the First Circle show in ATX in 86. The Keyboard solo of Lyle is always a treat in any track but this one is like a music lesson all by itself! This music changed my life and my appreciation of this kind of World/Progressive Jazz. Pat and Lyle have influenced my understanding of music, songwriting, composition/arrangement, production. Just a total treat to come home today to this Reaction video by you both

Pedro Aznar's vocals surely did the original justice.

Like DJ Rae, I've been a Pat Metheny fan for a very long time, and heard this tune when it was brand new. I liked Pat's coloboration with David Bowie in 1985 on "This is not America", but didn't know more about his music. In the early 90ties someone requested "Last train home" on a local radio station and I immediately recorded it without knowing it. And that open a door for me to a special place of music. Minuano is my fav track by the Pat Metheny Group and I enjoyed it so much to watch you both having a great time.

Agreed! I once heard that Pat's "Secret Story" was taught in musicology classes as an example of how to induce emotions in the audience... and I know why... listening to that entire album lets you follow a complete story of meeting, loving, getting disappointed and parting away. So much sadness in the last goodby pieces... I recommend it very much as an emotional soundscape.
