This isn't the kind of music that you can put on in the background and go about your daily chores. This music demands that you pay attention and really listen to it. One of my all time favourite albums.

Exactly - I've been a PMG fan since the late 1980s and I can't tell you how many people I've played some of it for who then make some kind of comment like "oh that's nice music to relax to" or something similar that makes it clear the music went in one ear and out the other. This isn't elevator music or 'muzak' - it's complex and demanding and some of the best music ever made.

Minuano, a masterpiece of contemporary music. Two souls, perfectly mixed: Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays.

Pat Metheny is one of the great contemporary composers and guitarists of the modern era. His work with the late Lyle Mays - the keyboard player and co-composer in the Pat Metheny Group - is always amazing. I've seen this group and Pat Metheny with other musicians, live more than other group and have just about all of the albums. Hi work encompasses jazz, but also world music, latin, rock, classical, folk and soundtrack music. He has written soundtracks, notably The Falcon and the Snowman, but his compositional skills much of his music that 'soundscape' quality that you can hear here.

P. Metheny is one of the most accomplished guitarrists and composers of our time but not a singer. Please Andre don't feel that's rude to close your eyes when you listen to his music because, and I think I speak from many of Metheny's followers, that's exactly the reaction that his music make you feel. Close your eyes and fly like a bird, but just be careful if you're driving a car 😉As usual, a very enjoyable reaction from you two. Thanks

I found you several months ago because you reacted to marillion (the band that made me love music). you both sure are people who listen music with your hearts and not only with your heads. Your reaction of marillion showed me that. It's great to see that you are now listening to Pat Metheny (another FAV of mine).

Thanks for sharing this. You've heard a lot from Metheny fans, and I won't go over any of that again, but here are a couple other thoughts: I think of my favorite Metheny pieces as journeys. I start out somewhere, and then, a few minutes later, I'm somewhere very, very different, and I think, "how in the world did I get HERE? Because a few minutes ago, I was way over THERE... but now I'm HERE." Interesting you mentioned the feeling of flying. I very much feel that during another Metheney/Mays composition, "First Circle" - the whole composition feels to me like a lovely, sometimes thrilling, flight. Thanks again, and all the best to you on YOUR journey!

I'm a jazz guitar player, so this would be My coup of tea. Metheny is one My favorites not only guitarists but composers. Fourty some albums of his own and countless collaborations. I'm gonna suggest You a ver y fun act. A long time ago Joni Mitchell put together an ensamble with Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and Don Alias. You should look for it.

Your reaction is what many say. The best way to enjoy the Group's music is driving on a highway, loud, with the top down. You feel like you are flying.

Like someone has said already Metheny is one of the leading musicians in the world. He operates in jazz but that doesn’t confine him to it. The Pat Metheny Group was not his group alone but a partnership between him and pianist / keyboard player Lyle Mays. Sadly he passed away a few years ago so we will never have new PMG music. The Latin influence was huge in this period and they had an 2 amazing musicians in the group both from Brazil: Armando Marcal who played most of the percussion and Pedro Aznar is a multi-instrumentalist and singer (it is his voice on this piece).
@timmiller59136 ай бұрын
It is Mark Ledford and David Blamires on vocals on this album (also multiple instruments).
@herrbonk36356 ай бұрын
Pedro Aznar is from Argentina iirc. So latin, but not Brazil (although the music is indeed brazilian influenced). And he's not on this particular album, as already noticed. They had several vocalist and multi instrumentalist over the years.

I've seen a number of your reactions but my first with you listening to jazz. An old jazz listener here. This was one of my favorite albums from the 1980's. The combination of hearing it again coupled with you two trying hard to get what you could from it actually brought a few tears to my eyes. So, thanks for that. I can always get rid of a few more tears. Jazz isn't easy music for the novice or one with closed ears and mind. Nice try. My guess that the main melody is in 6/8 (a music notation term). There are 6 beats per measure. If you counted 1-2-3-4-5-6. over and over the melody you would see how it fits.

Allways is good to see a reaction to the phenomenal Pat Metheney Group, is sad there are so few. If I'm not in a mistake the voice is Pedro Aznar from Argentina. My favorites are Are You Going With Me? and the beautiful Barcarole.

Great choice for a first time listening to PMG. I've attended many PMG concerts over the years this tune always received a good response from the audience. Sometimes they would play Minuano or Third Wind as the last tune of the evening or an encore. I've never been to a bad PMG concert, one of the best groups I've ever heard live.

I can’t resist. Consider this a public service. Here is a link to a tune from the Pat Metheny Group Live in Japan concert mentioned immediately below featuring Lyle Mays. It’s 80% Lyle solo piano. As I always say about Lyle, I don’t know which I like better, the notes he plays, or when he plays them. You can indulge yourself here:kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXO0pWVnhNmaf9ksi=0boXr211Vj78Xwve

Wow, to have this be your first and only PMG song and have their entire catalog to go through and discover. Lucky you. Mark your calendar. That said, you made your two breaks for discussion exactly at the two major transitions in the song! It’s best if you don’t do that. 😂 So listen to it again without breaks but instead listen to the LIVE version of it from Japan in 1995 here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaenp6hpnq-Dh7ssi=pr795W1YLNkEgBR8 Then, type in Pat Metheny Group Live in Japan 1995 and listen to ALL of the songs that will populate a playlist. You won’t regret it. You simply have to hear some amazing solo guitar by Pat Metheny and solo piano parts by Lyle Mays. Especially Lyles's solo piano work on many tunes. Again, nothing else even close to it. There are too many great choices to make further individual recommendations, but all of the live tunes in that live Japan show are a GREAT place to start. Enjoy the journey. You’ve been alerted to the tip of an iceberg. Don’t deny yourself what remains underwater to discover. There’s nothing like it in all of music.

I don't know how you can stop it at any point, comment, then resume, without having lost the perfect momentum the composer(s) have worked so hard to create & achieve from beginning to end... In my opinion, if you need to stop, you need to start over... Or, just wait until the end to comment. Thank you...

I think you should close your eyes if that's what you feel like doing. I'm interested in how you guys react naturally, on or off camera. If we lose you for a bit while you get lost in the music, that's just an honest reaction. Both of you are very interesting people and I love hearing what you have to say or _do_ in reaction to music.
