Great flashback for me Doug. Remember watching this performance live on the Ed Sullivan show at 14 years of age. Seems crazy that it was taboo to say “higher” in a song back then. My recollection is that it was likewise taboo to say the word “pregnant “ in the movie “Gone With The Wind”. Truly crazy! Thanks for yet another great review!

I saw this episode live and of course, we didn't know about the censorship issue, but when Jim sang 'higher' and I remember my grandmother saying something about 'those druggies' and not acknowledging his talent. lol. Most people who believed what the government told them about marijuana were the ones who drank the Kool-aid and believed EVERYTHING the government told them. Of course, back in the mid to late 60s, the images being shown on the evening news about the 'Hippies" and their culture was so slanted to the negative, not mentioning the basis of the hippie movement, that being Love and the need for it instead of war.

I think The Velvet Underground & Nico needs to be done as one-sitting. The songs individually are excellent, but the whole thing as a piece is really mindblowing. I'd be especially interested in Doug's reaction to this - considering what an atonal, druggie mess the album is. Often out of tune and/or out of time, but damn - it just works so well.
